My American Standard 4000 tank ran constantly. It has an ACTIVATE flush valve tower assembly, and a touchless "Fluidmaster" actuator. The following steps appeared to have fixed the issue.
I am a plumber myself. I have two of these toilets, have had them for 8years no issues and counting. I will say, what I find is the biggest culprit with others I have installed. Is that puck in the tank (chlorine) and treated city water in general being chlorine. Those rods as you can see in video are rusting as well as the battery pack metal contacts. Chlorine is a gas, which causes corrosion at room temp.. My home is equipped with a softener and chlorine remover. I don’t have the issue everyone is experiencing as a result.
You totally nailed my problem. It was preceded by an occasional little squeak at the end of a flush, during the fill. Thank you, very much, for taking the time to post this.
Thanks for this video. Other videos suggest the problem is the white float bottle or its seal inside the big black can. I checked that by detaching the rubber hose from the top of the can, holding a finger over the open end of the pipe, turning the water on and letting the tank fill. You can feel the vacuum pressure on your finger if the float bottle seats properly. Release your finger and it will flush, then shut the water off again. I watched your video, and realized the problem was the inability of the little electric piston on the inside end of the little rod you show us to properly seal the vacuum. The rod didn’t have any corrosion like yours, but wasn’t moving easily. A quick squirt of silicone garage door lubricant on the rod, and multiple presses on the white “manual” button got things moving freely. Turned the water back on, works like a charm. I noticed the contacts in the battery compartment were corroded, so I dabbed a bit of silicone grease on then with a cotton swab to keep the moisture off.
Thanks, great info. I have two of those toilets at home (3+ years) and had problems with both more than once. First time American Standard sent me a few components for replacement, including that mechanism with the metal rods. After that I had all kinds of problems, but I was able to fix by myself without replacing any parts, just by taking the whole thing apart and putting all back again. Kinda sucks, but okay... still happy with the touchless feature.
you're a hero....i have 3 of these and they've all had random and periodic ghost flushing, issues with the manual flush and 2 of them started having no complete tank fill issues. the WD-40 worked. hope i don't have to go the next level! thanks for posting
THANK YOU! Same symptoms: your fix worked on my model 4000 too! (We have 2 of these, so I did some preventative mtce and used your procedure on both. You've saved me the bother of calling American Standard - or a plumber! It's a great toilet design, otherwise.
Thanks dude this video just saved me a few hundred dollars 😂😂😂 had the same problem in two of my toilets with the same system.. WD-40 and moving the metal piece seemed to have solved the issue for now. Thanks again
Thanks for a simple fix. My leaking was caused by the flush tower having a crack in the plastic collar / elbow area. Sealed the air leak and my valve remains closed .
Same exact situation. Same exact fix. Except no WD-40. Manipulated the rod. Next time I might take it apart and put it back together. That seems to always fix a problem.
I was in Tennessee and the water company called me to tell me there is a leak in your house in Florida, must be a toilet they said because they saw on their computer water was constantly running, isn’t technology amazing and scary at the same time lol.
Thank you for posting. I have two of these toilets and the hands free part stopped working, only way to flush is manually. Any hints on getting the battery pack working again since all parts to this toilet are no longer available?
I did what the video shows. The push button is flushing with no problems. The blue light flashes but nothing happens when you try hands free flush. I changed the batteries and cleaned the plug on 9 volt style plug but no deal. Any ideas?
Thanks! I have two of these in my home also. One of them has had constant problems since around year 2 or 3. Absolute lemons from American Standard. Don't buy this model.
This video just saved me from replacing the $100 actuator. Tweezers and a squirt of WD-40 got the existing actuator functioning again. Thanks!
Same here! Such a good fix!!!
Wow. Thank you. Would have been my 4th replacement valve. Had not found another to buy. Did not see one on Amazon anymore. Fixed now for a long time.

Thanks brother you saved me a bundle. Never would have figured that one on my own.

thank you. you just saved me a call to the plumber! 2 sec fix yay
Thanks for your help
You bet, glad it helped.
Starting to get the intermittent flush issue again, I'm thinking to apply some silicone grease in the actuator. So frustrating 😡
Thanks fixed !
