    His accent is probably very close to what the founders sounded like. Its definatly not your typical modern day long island accent lol.

      It's the "North Atlantic accent." Its the accent of the upper North East American upper class until about the mid 20th century. The founders would have had a more pronounced English accent.

    Upon Robert's death in 2004, total ownership passed to Goelet. In 2005 the Goelets offered to place a conservation easement on the island in exchange for a promise from the Town of East Hampton not to rezone the land, change its assessment or attempt to acquire it by condemnation. The Goelets and East Hampton agreed upon the easement through 2025.Gardiners Island's NNL status was removed in July 2006 following a request from the island's owner, Alexandra Creel Goelet

    Very fun story! I was so interested in this, being that I was raised in the Philadelphia’s suburbs and my family was fairly well off, and a couple of us kids got sent to boarding school and my younger brother went to a boys private day school, etc.

      Today the property is permanently occupied by a caretaker and has been passed down to Robert Gardiner’s fiercely private niece, Alexandra Creel Goelet who has negotiated a conservation easement to ensure the preservation of the island’s delicate terrain, natural wildlife and historic structures.

      @TheFaustianMan Před 2 lety

      They never found the treasure. They made it up along with anything else to get Kidd's conviction. I doubt kid said anything to anyone where it was buried. This guy was a notorious liar. He used to tell people the Queen used to stay on his island when she didn't want to be bothered.

      No, but he and his family have lived on this island for so long that they have preserved some weird version of the old British accent. It’s the same thing on Smith Island in the Chesapeake Bay- the locals have a quasi-British accent.
