  • We tried to walk the Camino Sanabrés from our home in Ourense to Santiago de Compostela. Unfortunately, the Galician weather decided to turn on us...
    We started our walk on April 26, 2024 in Ourense, Spain.
    This is our 7th Camino together. We hiked the Camino Frances, Via Podiensis, Camino Primitivo, and Camino de Invierno in 2023, the Camino del Norte in 2019, and the Camino Frances in 2017. We packed ultralight bags for all of our journeys.

    No bad weather only bad clothing! Good call. I've had hypothermia and it can go from shivering and unpleasant to serious danger very quickly. And the trick is, you don't know when it slips.

      @DaysWeSpend  Před 19 dny

      True! We were super unprepared for it. Oooooh, that's so crazy that hypothermia sneaks up so fast.

    In Spain we have a saying that goes "Hasta el cuarenta de mayo, no te quites el sayo.." which roughly means, until the fortieth of May, don't take out your coat 😉 So yeah, planning a hike in Galicia in shorts at endings of April was a bit daring. Anyway, hope you're being more lucky next time. Nice video like always!

    Hi from Alberta Canada guys. We have been following you for some time. You never know how the weather is.. But you still keep a smile. Michelle and I(Jack) are going to the France route for six weeks starting August 15. We know what it is like to have to surrender the walk. In 2018 I got food poison in Bayonne the day we started. Made it to Punte la Raine and Michelle had a infected toe nail. So with both of us being ill, we stopped and went to Holland to visit relatives for the rest of our Camino.. So in 3 and half months we will try again. It would be a treat to meet both of you. You are so positive. Keep it up. Jack and Michelle

      Wow, that's a story. Sounds like you made the right decision to get off the Camino, too. Buen Camino for your next try. You've got this! Let us know if you come through Ourense.

    Camino FRIO! I just did the reverse and walked from Ourense to my home in Santiago. Arrived yesterday. The route is stunningly beautiful, wildly natural paths and so peaceful! Hailed a couple of times but no snow for us. I’ve walked several routes and the Camino Sanabres is my new favorite. 🪻🌹🌳🐦‍⬛🏞️ The sound of rushing water while walking beside the rio and over the large round edged stones, and narrow stone paths, tall green grass and birdsong and flora, ahhhhh so lovely. Every day was better than the last. Ultreía! 👣👣💚 (Last week while researching Ourense, I found your vlog. Thx!)

    Glad you guys got out safe. It’s the ‘perfect storm’, literally, for hikers - rainy, with unexpected temp drop in middle of nowhere. You’re literally better off it gets much colder and only snow instead of rain, because you won’t be as soaked, which creates the hypothermia risk. I’ve come to realize that the extra 1 lb for the thick rain poncho (like Altus or Ferrino), that covers the backpack too, provides great protection in such situations. I used it in Galicia in similar conditions as you, rainy but temps below zero (yes, don’t ask me how it can rain below zero), icy ground, but the poncho pulled through. Mountain Hardwear makes great rain paints with long zippers that go up/down the leg so you can take on/off without taking off shoes. As part of my layering system, i can add it on top of everything else during cold rain, or just by itself if warm rain or wind, or just one layer underneath (instead of two) if it’s medium rain. Love that flexibility. Anyway, crazy weather can get anybody at anytime. Jupiter Hikes is a pro, and he almost got hypothermia in similar conditions in Utah. Said it was his scariest trail experience. These kinds of videos are far more valuable than showing everything going right. Thanks for sharing.

      Thank you. That's so true that it's the absolute worst for hikers. Thanks so much for your recommendations. We'll take a look at the poncho and rain pants. 😍

    You made the right decision to cut it short. You were shaking so much - it did not seem good! Camino's are unpredictable and always have some element of struggle - I guess that's why it's called a pilgrimmage. Thanks for the sharing the reality of the Camino and that just because it doesn't turn out right once, doesn't mean you can't try it again.

    • @DaysWeSpend
      @DaysWeSpend  Před 19 dny +1

    Wise decision to turn back! Your visit to Cea has prompted me to throw this out there for your consideration: It would be super cool if you did a vid at the 2024 Cea bread festival, Cea being the "bread capital" of Galicia, or so I'm told 😉 Un saludo!

    Currently on the Camino Portuguese. It’s not as cold, but it’s definitely been wet. I started walking from Tui on Tuesday and it’s been raining since Tuesday. On the good side the temperature has been getting up to around 15 degrees so it’s not that cold. I’ve been keeping plenty warm with just some shorts and long sleeve T-shirt and my Altus poncho (I’m so glad I bought one of those)

    I'm humming and harring about taking rain pants. The forecast next week when i start is rain but it chamging a lot. Last year i froze going over O Cebreiro and ended up running to keep warm. I don't want to add pack weight but being in a position to keep walking even if it is a couple of villages further.
