I love my 5 speed 04 wrx wagon! Nice 50/50 split!
Great vid on the subaru and interesting to know how they work under different conditions!!
Very informative video. In regard to X-mode, it's awesome from all the video demonstrations I've seen and from personal experience. I've never gotten stuck using it and hill descent really came in handy for me on an icy hill last month
Agreed, X-mode is worth it. Seems like most people forget it's even there, kinda like the hill assist.
This was such an informative episode! You really do your homework!
I really appreciate you touching on the old vs. new debate. From first hand observation, I noticed that all the model Foresters behave differently.
I’ve been trail riding with a 1st and 3rd gen Forester. The differences are very noticeable. My friends 1st gen Forester torque split is 70/30 with a clutch pack center diff (that is modded to lock at the flick of a switch) and viscous rear LSD. His vehicle has proven to be the most capable of all our model Foresters. I don’t think that’s a mistake either, The Anderson Design and Fab brothers also run 1st and second gen Foresters and regularly tackle really tough trails.
Anywho, I’ve been a little jealous tbh, because I was one of those guys that thought Subaru AWD more or less behaved the same across all models.
JonDZ Adventuring Thanks Jon! I’d love a mod to lock the center transfer clutch. That’d be awesome!
On the 2018 FXT, an Active Torque Vectoring is included but it's really used for sharp turns as the system applies subtle braking on the inside wheel. Wonder if it has any impact on snow driving.
Love the videos. I am currently looking for a Subaru Forester as a daily/overlanding. Kinda stuck on finding a newer model that is really well built all around with no cvt problems and possibly a manual. Anyway keep it up brotha.
jake angles Thanks Jake!
@@radsr2109 The CVTs in Subaru, especially the early years, are well known to have issues even right off the lot in some cases. This part is common knowledge regardless of the issues I've had.
Such a fan, I hit the like button 2 seconds into the video lmao
Hahaha. You rock!
Ha! I always watch his video in entirety to make sure it deserves a thumbs up 😐.
Hahahahaha, J/K. Very supportive of Mr. Hijack 👍
Thank’s for the vid! Always interesting to see the Subaru awd in action.. I have the “mythical” Manual transmission on my 2018 Forester -lol. I do notice the 50/50 split when I accelerate hard from a stop (in snow and ice). The rear tires do instantly grip -which is nice- but not a major difference from what I’m seeing your vehical do. I believe the pivotal advantage with the Manual is steep climbs with no momentum -that doesn’t seem to be the strength of cvt tranny...
Matthew Johnson I think you’re right!
i would like to see how a central dif. with same distribution works
I always thought that Symmetrical AWD was just evenly spaced drive axles. Supposed to remove torque bias from left to right I believe.
Michael Grimm It is, but it’s more than that, it’s a branding thing.
A man after my own heart. Wears blaze orange gloves and believes a sunny 5 degree day is a beautiful day.
Is there anyway to reposition the backup camera since the sparing wheel is in the way?
I WANT THIS DAMN SUPPORT OF THE 5TH WHEEL!! its impossible to found in Europe
It's an insanely heavy setup. It's better to build a bumper mount pivot. It can easily be made less than half the weight
Hello what is the name of the discs?
How close are you to Wisconsin border? YT Foresters collab video on snow!?
Also, that farm is awesome :)
That'd be awesome! I'm actually about as close as you can get to the Wisc border without just driving across the bridge. This farm is located a few hours west of me though.
@@HighjakSecondary Very cool. I'll ping ya next time I head down to Iowa City, see if we can make it happen 👍
I’ve been looking at the Forester and the awd rav4 but the more I research and watch your videos I want a Forester. How are they on reliability? Long term.
I believe Toyota is putting CVTs in the new Rav 4s now too. With that said I wouldn't really have a preference, but I wouldn't modify either to do any hardcore offroading. Light mods would be fine though. I'd look into if Toyota is putting a real 1st/low gear in that model year. If they are... I'd take they Toyota. If you haven't seen my newer videos on this one it destroyed the CVT and Subaru had to replace it. I now own a Tacoma.
Any concerns with your wheel bearings with the +15mm offset?
Chris H Yes and no. The +15mm will wear them faster, but my guess is it’s negligible. Time will tell.
@@HighjakSecondary Awesome, a good experiment for sure. I know lots of people are doing it so it all comes down to how much of a glass jaw the bearings have.
AND if that does happen, will they give you any warranty issues since a reasonable argument could be made that the wheels are directly attached to the bearings.

Don’t trade the subie! Also do you have yellow tinted fogs?
Ha! Not tinted, but rather just a yellow bulb replacement fog bulb.
Shame for 30k they can't fit limited slip diffs in those things. Man there are some really nice limited slip diff setups on other cars. But those cars can be 80k+
My 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe Htrac AWD does 50/50 split. I’m guessing that means the amount of power it offers front and rears for performance
What I can positive about Hyundai’s new Htrac AWD in that Santa Fe is that it does performs excellent in heavy or light rain👍🏽
Symmetrical AWD simply means the axels to each wheel are the same length. It is true that Subaru has a bunch of different AWD systems. For the people that think the CVT “ruined Subaru’s AWD, you need to STFU. I have owned 5 Subarus now old and new manual and auto and the 2015 Outback 3.6r I own now has a CVT and the best AWD system I’ve owned.
Jesse James I’m on 5 as well. For off-road I prefer my 2010, give it X-Mode and I’d take to over this one.
@@HighjakSecondary your 2010 also has a turbo :) haha. Well, the 2008 to 2013 have 4.44 gearing, that's pretty freakin impressive.
before I purchased the 2015 FXT there was one video that had me really impressive with Subaru:
czcams.com/video/0_MXK2nzt2Y/video.html
sadly, I don't think the SH and SJ Foresters share the same steep hill climbing capability
Sorry cvt ruins it
idk about "ruining the AWD" system, but the CVT leaves a lot to be desired, IMO.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring I think they are up to the task.
Actually the front is heavier due to the engine so it gets more traction in slippery conditions where the rear would be lighter and therefore have less traction....that's why FWD cars do better in snow then RWD cars and that's why Subaru gave the front 60 and the rear 40....just my 2 cents...
what wheels are those?
Black Rhino "Boxer" 15"
you need dedicated snow tires !! all terrain arent worth it
Not entirely correct. Well... these are 3PMSF rated BFG KO2 all-terrains. However, having ran several sets of dedicated snow/winter tires throughout the years I can comfortably say that these ATs do just as well or better on this deep stuff when grass and dirt is below. The dedicated snow tires do better on ice, hard pack snow, and nearly all street driving, but when the snow gets deep these shine. So if you only plan to drive on the street then yeah dedicated snow tires are the best, but when we start talking off-roading especially in deep stuff that is not the case.
@@HighjakSecondary Theres tests that say other wise i can assure you :p
@@HighjakSecondary czcams.com/video/2ahrlD40so4/video.html
And yes theres a biig difference
@@HighjakSecondary Theres soooooooo many tests that prove other wise !
Get a real 4WD
Eric Furey My next vehicle will likely be a bit bigger with a traditional 4x4 system.
I think it's awesome he's doing this with a Subaru. Everyone has a boring gen3 4runner like you. It's fun to see something different.
Name something that has an enclosed heated back for cargo/pets (not a pickup), half decent fuel mileage for an AWD, good reliability and resale value, selection of aftermarket accessories like skid plates, bumper guards, and lights, over 8" of clearance, an AWD system that actually works, and an under $40,000 price tag. The only other option I can think of is the Cherokee Trail Hawk and I test drove both and preferred the Subaru.
This is real 4wd. Better than open diff 4x4.
