UPDATE: I've played for a couple more hours since the recording of this video. Can say that my conclusion was accurate, that the game really opens up later on, but you do have to grind out these early runs quite a bit to open up the map.

from 24:31 onward a litlle red arrow was "hinting" at a secret on the map i think. you should try looking for some (saw two red crosses there)

ya, it was pointing to a stone I could have picked up. Definitely missed it my first playthrough. Sometimes the arrows will point to mini-boss waves that you can fight for extra resources as well. Good catch! They can be hard to see sometimes.
