  • We love our VW campervan and love getting out to the wild and remote places, but sometimes we just want the comfort and luxury of a really good campsite! Join us as we head off to the FANTASTIC and incredibly REMOTE Wasdale Head National Trust Campsite in the English Lake District National Park. We will review the facilities of the campsite, look at what's to do in Wasdale and review the pros and cons of one of our favourite wilderness escapes.
    We are Richard and Jackie and we live in the UK. We retired from teaching at the age of 51 in the summer of 2022. Our plans for early requirement include relocating to the Yorkshire Dales, developing our forever home and travelling the UK, Europe and eventually the world in our VW campervan Nelson.
    Please subscribe and like our videos if you like what you see.

    Wasdale, Ennerdale & Buttermere are my favourite valleys in the Lakes. As you say it truly gets you away from all the crowds and are so beautiful 😊

      We only recently discovered Ennerdale and its beauty - looking forward to the spring months and lighter nights so we can get out and about more 🚐🏔️🥾

      Glad you liked it. It really is one of our favourite places to get away from it all. Many thanks for the kind feedback.

    Hi guys. I love the content that you produce, a great watch on a Sunday morning. I would agree with you that Wasdale is beautiful and is one of the very few areas in England that gives you a sense of isolation. A digital detox is so appealing.
    Thanks for your hard work and safe travels ❤.

      Thank you for you lovely kind words - we love getting out and about filming and taking photographs when we are on our travels - we were going to have a couple of days in Eskdale too but the weather turned with high winds and heavy rain 🚐 it is great having absolutely no signal - I read my book and slept soundly with no distractions 😊

    Hi Richard and Jackie, you always have wonderfully clear and sharp photography. Would you possibly mind sharing the details of the camera equipment you use. It would be most appreciated 👍🍺🍺

      Thank you- we both love playing around with photography. Most of our photos are taken with an iPhone 11 Pro which is the phone we both have. The wildlife photography is on our very old and basic Nikon DSLR 3100 which we bought as a kit with a tamaron 300mm zoom lens. The videos are mostly done on our iPhones or a DJI action 3 cam. Nothing too fancy just lots of time and patience 😊

      Thanks so much for the reply, you have inspired me to get out more and get back into photography, particularly landscapes. Keep the videos going 👌

    Excellent. For 35 years I lived 30miles away from Wasdale and spent many great days walking and climbing in the valley. Moved up to the Scottish highlands 2 years ago on early retirement from teaching. We’re planning a trip back this spring in our van so it’s good to see the brilliant improvements to the site. Enjoy your van life content and look forward to more.

      We have spent so many happy days hiking in the valley, there is just one Wainright left that is our nemesis- slight side. A return trip still needed with a few days in Eskdale hopefully 🚐 we also love the Scottish Highlands which seem so much more accessible to us now we are in the Dales 🏔️🥾

      @@earlyretirementwanderlust Slight Side can be an awkward one - have always combined it with Scafell. Good luck finishing the Wainwrights- I’d recommend the Birketts next. Lots of solitude on many of those - Pillar Rock can be a problem.

      @gcsScotland we have been combining some of Birketts routes with Wainrights

    Hi both, love the videos. We were there last in early January and yes would agree there is no signal in the campsite but if you need to make calls if you walk to the bridge where the mountain rescue team have parking at the base of Scafell there is signal there.
    We love the site too particularly in the quieter winter months. You just need to interrogate the weather forecast before commiting!

      We are looking forward to the Spring months with lighter nights so we can make the most of getting out on the fells - slight side is next on our list, probably from the Eskdale side 🚐🥾 thanks for watching our channel 😊

      Didn’t want to ruin it for you but was going to say the same about that bridge - you can definitely get a 4G signal there and therefore make WhatsApp calls. Another great video, as usual, thanks. We absolutely love Wasdale too 😊

      It really is one of our favourites. It almost gets even better as the weather gets wilder! We had an epic new years eve in the valley a few years ago.

    Wasdale looks beautiful. I think this will be the focus of our next trip to the Lake District. As we visit from Canada and won’t have camping equipment (just our vehicle) nice to know the Wasdale Campsite has pods. We love watching your videos on our large screen - the scenery is breathtaking ❤. Thank you!

    • @earlyretirementwanderlust
      @earlyretirementwanderlust  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hi Sharon- you will love Wasdale- it is just so isolated...and yet only 1.5 hours from the nearest motorway! The pods at the campsite looked pretty basic- if you fancy something a little bit more luxurious- DM us closer to the time and we can recommend places that offer a bit more comfort!
      Thanks for the comment.

      Hi Linda- you are far too kind- but thanks for your lovely words. We absolutely love the Lake District at any time of year. Bagging the Wainwright's is really helping us find the more off the beaten track places.
      Thanks again.

    Great review guys, especially being realistic about the drive getting there. I remember watching another review with someone complaining about ‘maniacs’ on the site, referring to children playing !!

      Hi Mike- thanks for the lovely comment. Wow- that's one way to describe fellow campers! Admittedly we have never stayed in the summer holidays, but we have always found the campsite so peaceful. We know we are fortunate to travel in off peak times, but we love the vibrance kids bring to the camping experience. It's just great to see people of all ages getting out into the great outdoors.
      Have a good one. R

    Off topic I know but what size dehumidifier do you have at home?

    • @earlyretirementwanderlust
      @earlyretirementwanderlust  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hi this is the model that we bought - Meaco DD8L Zambezi Desiccant Dehumidifier - it has been absolutely fantastic so far. We have no heating on upstairs and it completely dries a load of washing inc jeans in under 8 hrs and extracts upto 3litres of water in that time!!! It costs about 8p an hour to run and has a cheeky addition that it blows out warm air upto 17 degrees which airs the spare bedroom in the process 😊

      Hi I have had a quick check on the website - it is small motorhomers and camper vans only I think. They are really helpful if you ring and ask?
