  • In today's video, I drive the oft forgotten Maserati Spyder. The precursor to the GranSpyder, this is a dedicated two seater sports car, with gorgeous looks and a stunning engine - but one big problem.

I have the 4200 Coupe 2003, had it for 3 years now and no major issues. On 58000 miles now and it's a fantastic car to drive. The cambiocorsa gearbox is easy to use and shifts perfectly and quickly (not sure if it's has a software upgrade). I have sports exhausts which sound fantastic and sprints the car to 60 faster than my 911 3.4l . Not as engaging or rewarding as the 911, but certainly special and more exotic, and it's Italian.

Absolutely loved it. Flawed, yes, but in terms of being interesting, rare, beautiful and fast it ticked all of those boxes in a way few other cars could. I replaced it with a 996 C4S convertible, which was probably slightly more dynamic but I don't look back on it anywhere near as fondly.

I’ve had a 2002 CC Spyder for about 7 years. I think the review is pretty accurate. Like someone else said, after a few weeks the scuttle shake faded for me. Driving in Sport makes it worse as it firms the dampers. Handling etc. is enjoyable. It’s not a sports car, it weighs 1700kg, but it has character and beauty which is what I wanted.
Also, it’s not a chopped down 4200 Coupe. The Spyder was launched first and was a completely different car from the 3200.

Around my suburb in Melbourne Australia, we have quite a few Maserati Giblie's and perhaps two Ferraris of mixed pedigree, they are all driven by Italians who happen to be real estate agents. Which explains it all, given the astronomical prices of these cars here. So apparently an Italian heritage and the access to vast amounts of money will inevitably result in sports cars from Italy, this also applies to motorcycles, though perhaps less so, as they are cheaper relatively. Most young Italians will be riding an MV Augusta triple cylinder, and they certainly look the business.

Never had that problem with ours. Sure, it's not as sturdy as the 360 Spider we also have, but it's a proper curve eater. Ours is slightly lowered and was delivered without the Skyhook suspension, so that might play a role. But I don't at all agree that this car suffers from scattle shake, at least not ours. I would guess "Rory" has some issues, not the CC Spyder in general.

Interesting observation: I've never ever heard a financially well off person complaining about a car's reliability. The type of people who do do that are invariably always working in a job paying minimum wage, and therefore can just about afford an older prestige car, but not the maintenance of said vehicle. And to cover up their ineptitude, blame the car for being unreliable. Moral of the story: Buy a well and properly maintained example of your preferred car, keep up the maintenance, and it will be pretty much fine.

TBH for the first few weeks it really annoyed me, (mind the windows don't rattle on mine) but now I guess my brain has been programmed to cancel that out, like white noise. Instead it is now just another of the inputs from the car. Does seem like the problem was reduced in the later 03 or 04 on cars, but I'm sure they're still not great.
As you say the highlight is the engine, but I really don't find the handling bad, but yeah easy to provoke oversteer even with the stability on. I never watched Harris' piece, or any others - I make my own judgements and the scuttle shake is horrendous. I am amazed anyone would put up with it.
I drove a TVR Chimaera the week after this and it was rock solid by comparison

One of the only decent modern Maseratis made. I'm generaly not a Maserati fan at all, but this gets a thumbs up from me.👍

One of the ‘only’ 🤔. Facelift 4200’s & Gransports are exceptional, as is a QPV GTS, Granturismo S MC Shift, GT Sport, Stradale, QPVI GTS and a 3200 AC. So this is one of the ‘only’ ones that aren’t any good.

@@richardgrace3482 This was only coming from a non-Maserati Fan.Of course, you'd like many Maseratis because you're a fan of it.

What about a full rebushing ?
    Would that help ?
It's just very hard to imagine the Italians turning out a less than perfect Sports Car.

If a Maserati sounds bad then it's broken. Saw and heard my 1st MC20 at the weekend, sounded magic.
What about putting it on air?

I had one… engine fantastic when the rest of the car would work. You never knew when it would and sometimes it fixed itself or broke down on its own whilst garaged. Never got another one is like the horny ex who was good at the time but not the long term

Nice affordable convertible, slightly different, reliable and fun: BMW Z1. Or too safe choice?

I owned a spider for years, the chassis was terrible, especially when you accelerate round corners! I think it’s because they chipped the roof off! The engine was glorious!

  • @bespincustompropsbombarta8300

They sound great but look like a less pretty rip off of the 96-2005 DB7/XK8 I'd have a 02-05 xkr instead, cost less and more reliable or the next gen x150 xk or xkr

A car sadly defined by 2 noises firstly that amazing V8 secondly the rattle constantly in the background as you pointed out. Maybe one of those cars better to lust after than to own
