might never see this...but yeah morathi is litterally the best character in warhammer lore lol....because shes actually the most "human" of all the characters.....everyone knows what she is and what shes about but they also know without her help chaos would run rampant.

Her old world stuff is also nice ... i mean she is basically the reason for the elves to split and wage war between eachother for thousands of years just because she was pulling the strings in the backround ... but i guess Alarielle, Tyrion, Teclis and Malekith who were all present at the time and were all manipulated by her just think she has changed and dont decide to smite her on sight lmao
Tyrion also knows Morathi worshipped Chaos. He was literally there when Slaanesh ate her. It's sort of heartwarming seeing Tyrion and Teclis finally getting along with their uncle though.
And yes people knew what Slaanesh was. Elves more than anyone, since he was an specific constant pain to them.
Malekith dicking Morathi (often *literally* ) and Morathi overcoming her son's expectations, is a recurrent theme in that relationship. So yeah, sending her to rule over Shitstan is a joke.
I love her new lore, it fits her perfectly, making her ruling through deception, making her very powerful but at the same time, gettimg her one mistake away from having her own followers butcher her. I wonder what would happen if Hellebron would return.
Morathi also killed the only woman Malekith really loved to lead him further on the path of evil. At first using their relationship as mother and son, then using her magic and charm. Hence, she the biggest reason for his fall and the resulting 5000 years of dark elf atrocities
The Everqueen wasn't the queen of the Wood Elves... she was the leader of the Avelorn, which was a province on Ulthuan. The Wood Elves were the colonists that didn't abandon the Old World after the War of the Beard (WAAAY after Aenarion's time) and retreated to Athel Loren.
And BTW who is this Malarian you are talking about? You mean Malekith?

There where also people from averlorn that fled there during the great catastrophy.
During the end times, Alarielle (queen of the woodelves) and the everqueen (from averlorn) merged to become the embodyment of life so AoS Alarielle is both
Her manipulative relationship with her son in the old word, her furious claim that her son should be the King, her manipulative struggle for power, her empowerment of religion to control........she is CERSEI LANNISTER!
Except she's smarter and has magic
She is WAY, WAAAAY worse than Cersei. Half the shit that happened in the Old World is her fault, direct or indirectly (Creation of the Dark Elves, War of the Beard, giving Necromancy to Nagash), Cersei schemes had never threatened reality itself while Morathi was close to bring the End of Times several times over. Worse part is that she is just a product of her culture and how the Curse of Aenarion means that nobody in Nagarythe can ever have nice things (no exceptions), not inbreeding like the Lannisters. She was one of the most complex characters in the Old World, and remains one of the most complex characters now.

Absolutely love the mask aesthetic that a lot of their models have. Might kitbash their heads on some CoS Elves if I ever make an army of them. However I’m gonna be doing a Kruleboyz army for Christmas. One thing at a time, don’t wanna get too overwhelmed.

I was pretty much an AoS hater like a lot of fantasy fans for several years, but finally decided to give it a shot by reading soul wars.
However, what’s really, *really* sold me on this setting is your lore videos. The way you talk about how deep and relateable, how... I can’t really find the words - but you make the setting for me. Thank you so much for these.

This is probably your best Lore video yet, and I felt like your old world knowledge really shined through. I would have loved hearing more about the Old World lore, I think it did have it's place in this video... but i do agree that they've really made Morathi an extremely interesting character in AoS

Great Summary! I disagree that Morathi's Old World lore is less interesting but understand its less relevant to most of your audience. Think its worth mentioning that her use of religion and manipulation of the gods is not a new thing in the game. She was a Khainite in 4th to 6th edition yet had access to the Slaanesh spell deck in 4th/5th. She lost that at the start of 6th but got it back in the Storm of Chaos supplement when you could take her as the general of a cult of slaanesh army. She lost the beloved of Khaine ability and gained the mark of Slaanesh if you did that. By 7th her focus had moved to the Dark Convent of sorceresses in Ghrond. Khaine is not mentioned in her character entry and she can't use Slaanesh magic. She still has some subversive control over the cult of khaine as it was her who gave them the cauldrons and got them addicted to preserving their youth and beauty but there is no direct link. The distancing from Khaine continues into 8th edition where she is more closely linked with Hekarti - the elven goddess of magic. She gains Hekarti's Blessing as a special ability. By The End Times she is describing herself as "Hekarti reborn". Morathi worships no one and manipulates everyone, mortal and god alike, and she always has done. Easily my favourite character in the whole of warhammer - lol as you can probably guess...
I love AOS lore but old world lore is amazing and in my oppinion far superior to Aos lore AT THIS POINT. Old world was sculpted over many years AOS will need to do the same before its as good

I know this is an old video, but just getting back into WH and thinking of starting Daughters of Khaine. You are very good at story telling, I really liked your starter box set review as well, a lot of food for thought.

Minor correction, the marriage tradition and phoenix kingship was created by aenarion. That marriage was not ceremonial, Aenarion really loved the gal but after she died and took up the sword of khaine he found morathi amd she enchanted him (in my opinion) then they married

I have ADHD and reading the vast amount of lore in these books is tough for me as I easily get distracted and have issues committing new information to my long term memory. I really appreciate your videos as even though i find it difficult i can just leave them on repeat while I work or do other things and eventually it sinks in. Otherwise i'd have to sit for hours re-reading every book to make sure it sticks :D

Awesome video, My only criticism would be suggestion that everyone in Order is good. The Chaos gods aren't inherently Evil from an alignment standpoint, and as such, Order, which opposes them, needen't be inherently Good

Another great video man, really interesting stuff. I like how with time AoS lore has finally started to have a lot of these contrasting layers of depth to it- I bet as time goes on it'll become richer.
As far as questions, a bit off base considering the content, but what is the status of Brettonia and the Empire in AoS exactly? If there even is very much of it.
Thank you for commenting! Brettonia is, frankly, absent. GW discontinued the models and hasnt brought them forward narratively. As for the Empire, it's been renamed the Free People (Or Free guild) and they are in the lore more and more. I'm hoping they get a battletome soon, but until then they feature prominently in the Malign Portents short stories :)
Ah, thanks so much for the clarification! I had figured as much but nonetheless wanted to know for certain. I do hear some mention of Brettonia-esque lore in the flesh eaters court book, but well thats a peculiar fate all on its own.
At least the Empire arent gone though; hopefully they'll get a fantastic book in the near future.
So here’s my question regarding Kain: I read in one of the AoS Gotrek novels, I can’t remember which, a scene where his DoK companion performs a ritual to Kain, and it is said that she could hear Kain speak through her. She is granted enhanced abilities briefly through his blessing. My question is, when these priestesses perform these rituals to Kain, is it Morathi that answers? Or has Morathi somehow tapped into Kain through her blasphemy?
TLDR: when prayers or rituals to Kain are answered, who is the one who answers?

2+Tough also the lore seems awesome already, a race hiding in the deep/mists abandoned by their creator god sounds very compelling and I'm interested to see their interpretation of it and their relationship with other Aelves.
Also the Greek/Roman aesthetic is criminally underused in fantasy and AoS
Would it be interesting if khaine does actually return though? She ends up keeping her power but is also forced to follow a god and maintain her lies (because she doesn't not only does she have to deal with the follows who she tricked but a god). I think that it would be an interesting story development for her character and how her plots and schemes change. Don't if it is possible or how it would happen though, i just think it would be interesting and an assuming twist to have her massive lie accidentally be true.

So teclis made some water based aelves, morathi made snakes... Tyrion and malerion made.... ? If the two greatest sorcerors in the aelven race couldnt properly forge their souls it seems suspect that the otger two more warrior like gods were perfect

@@KcBull Teclis and Tyrion were just elven twins that played important roles during the war with the dark elves , in fact Teclis was born with physical defects that made him weak and thus he became a mage and Tyrion was stupid and easy to anger but good at smashing stuff.

In the battletome actually, Morathi knows that the Elven Gods are cyclic entities. In time they will return. However, after Morathi found the Iron Heart of Khaine, she crushed any hope of Khaine one day returning. She uses it to channel the energies of the blood sacrifices and war not to Khaine but to herself. She is using the last known piece of Khaine to rob his godhood and to ascend herself to rightful place.
yeah i know that she has his heart or soemthing. but heres what i am thinking since the lore in this game goes forward, i can see someone stealing that heart and tossing it into her magcial godly blood cauldron and then Kahine comes back in full form
Bring back Hellebron and have her steal the heart. That I would be fine with.

The closest equivalent to Morathi is Azshara in World of Warcraft, who like Morathi is a giant snake woman with demigod like powers.

How does morathi’s people reproduce?
you are a man with a singular focus ;) Earlier in the lore series we explained that they do indeed have men around, morathi just curses them with a weak and feeble nature. Look at the doomfire warlocks as an example
Phoenix king was.married to the everqueen not the queen of the wood elves and Morathi was the kings second wife not his consort.
Do you know what would be a sick twist? Let’s say Morathi ascends to god hood, right? What if she keeps the lie of Khaine up but wants the attention of her people towards her (she wants to be there goddess solely). What if she uses the deceit of shadow magic to create a fake Khaine so she can stage a fight with him and “defeat” him in combat. Now here’s the twist, what if she pumps so much shadow magic into this Khaine clone, it becomes too powerful it’ll beat Morathi and reincarnate the elven god of death and torture. He’ll take the souls from the now vomiting Slaanesh to recreate the druchii and have this grudge with Nagaash right off the bat for moving this mass amount of souls.
That would be a super legit story arc!!!!

let's get one thing straight. Sigmar did not destroy the order pantheon. It was the other gods that left the pantheon of their own free will, they destroyed the order pantheon and abandoned Sigmar.
Every time a book comes out the story changes a little (the plot thickens!). It's true that it's not Sigmar fault that the pantheon fell apart.... but I'd say that he stopped trying to keep the 'band" together after the betrayal of Nagash and the loss of this hammer. While not his fault, I do think he was the lynchpin binding it all together while the other gods went their own way.
True, the thing with Order is Sigmar is technically not in charge of all Order. He simply controls the largest/most powerful factions. The other gods band together around him out of mutual survival more than genuinely liking him.
He is currently trying to reforge it, with currently Grungi, Morathi and Arielle being generally on board, along with several Godbeasts. No word quite yet where Tyrion, Teclis and Malerion quite stand, but it has been mentioned they don't think too highly of Sigmar overall (as in they don't think he is particularly smart).
Morathi should consume/eat khaines heart. It might make her a god quick.

Warhammer rotted due to the laziness/idiocy of the final background/army book writers. (Not the novelists) Also "The End Times" not because they happened but because of how poorly they were handled. Again, laziness and idiocy. Of course, the the result of "The End Times" didn't help. Warhammer then was destroyed both literally and figuratively so AoS could introduced. After all, we can't have Sigmarines in the Old World.

Its stated as a rumour in the 4th Edition army book "for she is his (Malekith's) mother and, it is rumoured, his ancient and unholy lover also." they didn't get a book in 5th and in the 6th & 7th ed books its just mentioned that some elves consider their relationship "unnatural". He does get in bed with her in the narrative piece at the end of the 6th ed book but there is no hint of anything sexual. Its not mentioned in any of the other game supplements. Long while since I read the novels so not sure if its mentioned. Incest does not appear to be unknown in Dark Elf society - Malus Darkblade and his sister for example.

absolutely! She regularly sends out... "Troublesome" followers on dangerous missions to get rid of them. No reason there couldnt be a group of them

Technically... it's blurry. SHe really is a mortal, warped by Slaanesh and an EXTREMELY powerful wizard. Seems immortal as well. But the book reinforces constantly that she is not a god, nor does she have the support of one.
If she hates Slaanesh so much for pretty good reason why hasn't she kill him and take his power to up tane godhood from there?

Highly gifted sorceress or whatever class she fits. He ascension from what I've heard is more of being tainted or warped, it's not like a demi god unless you class a demigod on power alone.
She just extremely clever, determined and manipulative backed with magic and knowledge.

Morathi's whole arc in AoS is just so thematically profound and touches on feminism, misogyny, the monstrous feminine, recovery from rape, self-defense, traditional depictions of "the bad mother" and "the fallen woman"...I just love her so much, even with her Saturday morning cartoon levels of evil villainy

the fact that khaine is dead is just sad in my opinion. Khaine is way more badass that morathi. she's literally a failure. I'm fine with khaine being dead if he'd dead like grimnir is dead. I think his presence should still be a thing. perhaps morathi could oneday become possessed by Khaine. But the fact that some old golds survived the end times and khaine didn't is bad writing. kurnoth survived the end times. why couldn't khaine. this whole faction just feels sad and pathetic. would've been way cooler if they were like the fyreslayers but morathi is trying to steal khaines worship. a subtle change that would make the lore way better. AOS in a nutshell
