The PELOTON of Rowing: Hydrow - WORTH THE MONEY?!

- This video discusses the truly innovative features that the Hydrow rowing machine offers. Hopefully this can give you a better idea to decide if this machine is worth it for you! I truly believe it is the FUTURE of rowing!
If you want to support me and my channel, I would GREATLY appreciate it if you checked out the Hydrow from their site using my affiliate link HERE: shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=151746...
Disclosure: I reached out to Hydrow and asked to see if I could rent or receive a rower to review as I was constantly being asked about this machine. The company sent me the rower free of charge, but I made it VERY clear during correspondence that I would be 100% completely honest in my review of the machine and I would not be afraid to “call out” the bad aspects of it. Surprisingly, and like I said in this video, this machine exceeded my expectations. That is why it may seem “sponsored” - it is not; I truly just think this is an amazing machine.

I don’t mind expensive equipment if it is worth the price. However I don’t like expensive equipment that needs expensive subscriptions. I’m probably not the target market for this rower. I don’t always like this everything-as-a-service world we live in.
We've had ours for 3 weeks and love it, but I totally agree with you. The monthly subscription was a hurdle to get past when making our decision. Also, you can't even get a C2 without a long wait...we got the Hydrow in 2 weeks. Here's to hoping they drop the $38 monthly subscription price at some point like Peloton did for lesser access. I would be fine w/out access to live rows and only access to the existing library.
That's what I heard about Pelaton bikes montly subscription.
I pulled the bike out of the basement and riding outside instead.
I agree. For me it is either you can make it expensive or ask for a subscription. Asking both of me is an automatic no go.
@Wise Mann yes, at this point I'm told its essentially a brick w/out a monthly membership that currently has one level...$38.
38 bucks is a monthly subscription to my ymca
Separating out the specific parts and tools for each of the seven step assembly process steps was brilliant on the part of the manufacturer. For the price, I am impressed at how sturdy this czcams.com/users/postUgkxvObaTzoHoHQLL4lHbJQmExHqsrZQm-f7 unit is and it does go together easily. Well, I was puzzled at first at Step 5 and maybe the instructions should mention that rail #62 needs to be tilted upwards a little to get the rail to fit into the main part #44. I like it that the rower can be stored vertically in a really small amount of space, but be forewarned that this rower is top heavy and for safety you'll need at least two bungee cords to keep the unit upright, attaching them to something; in my case to a third garage door. I have had this unit only a short time, and I will post an update once I've had it for a year. As for working your legs, I have to admit that I'm mainly rowing for upper body strength and I use other forms of exercise for leg strength (like walking fast, biking, or using a trampoline. But if you pull as far forward as possible, then you can give preference to your legs for the first 4 feet or so of travel. I also admit to not taking the two electronic connectors apart at Step 7. I simply inserted the two batteries while the other parts remained connected. By the way, there is plenty of resistance here, even in the lowest resistance settings. Kudos to Sunny Health & Fitness !
Love this rower, but that subscription fee is just crazy, deal breaker for me.
Have been rowing for a month with the Hydrow and I absolutely love it! So great to hear your opinion and get better technique thanks to your videos. I'm a diabetic and getting into fitness rowing has really helped my health and I feel great about it!
We bought one near the start of quarantine and love it! It is expensive, but you get what you pay for. There is a monthly subscription that is required for the classes, but they are more than worth it. Like Austin said, the coaches are entertaining and keep you into the workouts. You will find that you have a few favorite and gravitate towards them.
Keep up the great videos!
If you can afford it why not. But geez that is expensive compared to my C2!
I have the Hydrow, too, and it’s worth every penny.
I bought mine about a month ago and love it too!!! Love how Nick's socks keep me guessing 😆😂🤣
Hey Austin, I love your posts on Instagram and your You Tube videos. I have been waiting for this review and super excited to hear what you think of it!
I bought my Hydrow last month and am totally obsessed with it. The Hydrow community is Unbelieveable and the coaches are all amazing. They all bring something different to the table. All of them are super motivating and very helpful in teaching proper rowing technique. I totally agree with you about the Leader Board. 😊 I can’t say enough good things about it. I can’t wait to see more videos from you on the Hydrow.
I have had a Hydrow for 4 months rowed 500k+ meters loved ever meter. Great review and you are completely correct best rower ever.
Congrats on all the progress and success my friend!!
@@trainingtall what’s ur take on the Echelon Row?
Buying one this weekend ! Can’t wait ! Even more excited after seeing this!
Did you start using it? I am waiting for mine!
This is the first review of a hydro I've seen, good to get full review.
Thank you. Hopefully if nothing else it will bring Competition from the other row machine builders.
We just ordered one yesterday, we are so excited for this machine. Thank you for nice video!
Thanks for your awesome content! I’m always excited when you post a new video!!!
Brittany Murphy thanks Britt :) I’m going to try to post more frequently! I’ve been busy!
I’ve had one for a couple of months and love it! Glad you like it too. See you on the leaderboard!
Have had my hydrow now for over 40 weeks and over 1500 km's rowed and counting.... My first rower and first row period. I looked at and argued over which machine I was going to get and MAN DID I MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION. It's really great to see a veteran of rowing agree with my impressions of this machine. The rower quality, the classes, the leader board, everything just keeps me coming back for more everyday! And I bought mine used - the seat rollers started to get crunchy.... Called Hydrow figuring I'd spend a few bucks replacing the rollers. Hydrow replaced the seat for FREE even though the warranty didn't transfer! Love this thing and I can honestly say that I have never been in better shape in my life than on this thing - including vs resistance training + ellyptical (I stopped lifting due to tennis elbow) . I've gotten lean on this thing. Seriously if you're thinking of rowing this thing is the bomb! Just do it. Oh and the instructors are world class - they will keep you coming back for more! Highly recommended!
May I ask...is the $38 a month subscription required to get any of the classes in the library? Or, do some of the videos come with the product..already installed? :)
When I was shopping for rowers in April I’d asked you about your thoughts on Hydrow, glad you delivered (even though it’s after my waitlist and purchase of my C2) 😂 I’m glad you like it, maybe it’ll be my upgrade machine
Awesome content as always, Austin. I'm very excited to see where the future of rowing goes as well. There have been a lot of rumors (and leaked photos) that Peloton will be releasing a rower as it's third piece of equipment. If that's the case, hopefully us folks that have C2s already can try out the live workouts using the Peloton app in the future. Here's hoping!!!
Figures I finally get a C2 and now it's Hydrow up in here! Personally I'd never pay a subscription for a home fitness machine... I'd rather spend that cash on rowing classes instead and meet some rowing folks! Still I hope you like it
I row since 2015, 3 x week. Meeting real people with the same goal has been a great support that made row all this time. But I got my own C2 few weeks ago just to do some smooth rowing sessions at home between HIIT classes
thank you! I just got mine delivered today because everything I found was positive (besides the price). I really wanted to hear your take, so this is great to view since I already went for it!
I love this and this guy is AWESOME! I think this will go great with my peloton bike in my garage gym I’ve made for myself!
Great review Coach Austin! I had seen it advertised and wondered if it was good or just hype/great marketing. Sounds like it’s a winner. I would love the variety of workouts, and the element of competition. I miss both due to Covid.
Great review dude. Thank You!
I looked at this before I purchased my concept 2 but I have a peloton and didn’t want to be paying two monthly memberships.
It is wonderful to have all of the options that these memberships offer aside just from cycling and rowing.
Thank you for your great review. I’m sure it is awesome but I will just keep following along with your CZcams and HIIT +, and ebook rowing videos!
Another great video Austin. I was very curious about this machine. Hoping you can break down costs sometime. Also kinda bummed because I just bought a waterrower yesterday.... I love it but dang. Miss ya OTF buddy.
so you have to use the subscription or can you workout without it?
Your recommendation helped me select my rower. I selected the Hydrow Row and am enjoying it a lot. Thanks for doing this.
Looks really good. looking forward to seeing more
I have had my hydrow since may and coming up on 1,000,000 meters. The coaches are the best and push you to be better. The Hydrow is addictive and the Hydrow community is strong. See you on the water. #justjim
I ordered using your link, great review. Hope you are right about this machine. It is pricey, but I need to start exercising.
Great review Austin! I sell exercise equipment for a living and I have NEVER used a magnetic rower that felt even half as smooth as a Concept 2 or WaterRower until the Hydrow came out.
How about the Nordic track 900? is that a good one
@@mprealtygroupminincleri2734 I've been searching for an answer to the same question. Curious to hear what you've heard elsewhere or what purchase decision you made.
I just ordered one and am so excited to enter the world of rowing. Your videos have been very helpful. Any advice for a beginner to prepare myself for this journey?
So glad to see you review the Hydrow!
We got ours 3 weeks ago, so due to price, its a risky choice to watch a review at this point...glad my heart wasn't broken! We love it, and you're right...the hardest part of rowing is sticking with it (paraphrasing). I've used machines off/on for years in gyms, but always felt mind-numbingly bored. With this machine, that hasn't been the case so far. I would also recommend the Journeys. If you're not in the mood for competition or just want to listen to nature, the Journey rows are fantastic...very meditative! The only additional feature I'd like to see is ability to save/filter by Favorites. A number of use have requested this feature based on the Facebook group activity, so I'm hoping it gets added at some point.
I'm 6'5", so I've been watching many of your videos to get pointers and advice on form. The one addressing hip pain was very helpful!
I purchased Hydro after I watched this review. Only Con is the 6-8week wait for delivery.
Thanks for the detailed review, it helped with my decision.
Glad it could help!!
You can get it from Best Buy in two-four days.
Wow this looks amazing 🤩
Awesome overview! Hard to tell how loud or quiet it is compared to the C2 and water rower. Maybe a comparison vid?
Hey Austin, thanks for the video. I bought one yesterday, but need to apologize that I didn't see your affiliate link until today. I did however mention your video was the main reason for my purchase when I took their survey - not sure if you can reach out to them to get credit. Anyway, thanks for the video and content.
No prob, James! I'm just glad you were able to get one!! You'll love it I think!
I have always owned a concept 2 and was somewhat reluctant to try the hydrow but I was very pleasantly surprised with the feel and the quality of the workouts.
Does it have a force curve display option? That’s one of my favorite things on the C2 to “coach myself” and monitor my form. I’ve been eyeballing the Hydrow for a while and wondering if it would have a realistic feel. Thanks for the review! Wondering if I should sell my C2 and get this instead... been struggling to actually use the C2 as much as I’d hoped.
Great review. Makes me sad I didn't get one before they were released when they were only $1k. How do your benchmark times compare with your C2 times (500m, 2km)?
I have torn hip labrums in both hips and I’ve already had one arthroscopy that didn’t last. Starting stem cell treatment soon, but have been told that running and Peloton might be out for me going forward. This looks like a serious contender for cardio!
Just ordered mine. Really excited to get my cardio going and I need the help since I am not a rower. I am so out of shape and need the help. The monthly membership isn’t too crazy. Eat out a couple days less a week. We will see how it goes. You can’t put a price on health and I am banking on this getting me towards my goals. Will update once I get into this lifestyle!
Hi Austin!
I really like your review on this amazing rowing machine. It actually helps people to see how to row right on the monitor, so it seems like the perfect rower they should have in gyms.
I was also wondering if you know the biorower. I have not had the chance to try it by myself yet, but it seems to me that it actually is the best rowing machine a rower could have. So maybe you could do a review on the biorower someday :)
Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
Great video and information! I want to get a new machine and up in the air on Hydrow vs Ergatta. I like the gamified system on the Ergatta but your review makes it seem like the hydrow has a lot of the same things.
Have you used the Ergatta system? Plan on doing a review?
Peloton has been talking about a rowing machine and if they don’t come out with one soon, I might get this one!!
I have a Peloton and a Hydrow. Couldn't wait for Peloton to make one. This hydrow is amazing!!!
Great Video, Austin. How do the rowing distance measures compare to the C2? We know water towers are much “faster”, how does this compare?
Thanks for the video! It just pushed the Hydrow to the top of my shopping list. Any chance you’ll do a review of the Ergatta? The video/gameplay is different than the Hydrow, but would love to see your take.
the first time i sat on a rower, i tried to use it as a bicep exercise machine....im sorry
This was a very thorough walkthrough of every feature of the Hydrow, which was nice. I also believe you liked it. I watch a lot of your videos, and in your other reviews for rowers, you provide pros AND cons. You mentioned not one con. Even when talking abt the price, you didn’t position it w any caveats (as you’ve done in every other review video). It would be helpful to viewers to know if you purchased this machine. Was the machine provided to you by Hydrow at no cost? Is this a sponsored video? There isn’t a written disclosure and you didn’t state either way throughout the video.
I’ve got a disclosure in the description :)
Hi!!! Love your videos!! Im on a budget and looking for a rowing machine for my home. Which one do you recommend?
I am 6'8" as well but not as skinny as you! Great video. Thank you for putting your spin on the rowing machine. The "Tesla" of rowing machines.
Big Dave I prefer the term lean! 😉 thanks for watching man! Always awesome to hear from tall guys!
@@trainingtall definitely lean.
@trainingtall Thanks for the intro. With the additional strength or in the mat workouts, what types of weights are needed?
I just got my Hydrow, and have done 2 workouts (3 if count the cooldown one), and already filling the workout. Definitely need to work on technique. As for training videos, would love one that had a digital shark fin behind them. Extra motivation. As for technique, I think my biggest problem is getting shoulders forward over hips. Just need to keep working on it each time.
I'm very interested in the Hydrow, but say more about these shorts and overall training gear suggestions.
The shorts are from JL. That’s all the equipment you need! Get a rower and row!
I saw a demo unit at best buys and the $ wasn't the main deterrent. It's just so... huge. If there was an option without the monitor or if it could connect to a TV and can fold / is smaller, I would be a fan. I'm still looking for a good space saving rower for an apartment.
Just bought a c2. Need it for standard testing of I get another machine will probably be a dynamic machine of some form
Thanks for the informative video. If you get the chance, you should compare this to Ergatta for the Water Rower.
Question: any ideas on how to get ALL the data into Apple Health? Strava doesn't have the Caloric data, and while it delivers distance to the Apple Activity App (through Apple Health) The distance is not reflected in the Activity app itself. I'd rather not manually enter the data as that's frowned upon in our weekly competitions. Any thoughts you have on a solution would be much appreciated.
I have a serious question can you program your own sets. For example what if my coach has set me to do: 4x6km with 1: 15 rest
20km ss
8x500m 1: 30' rest sprint 2km split
I need to be able to do *my* sets. No matter how good the machine is, it needs to be able to do what I ask it to do
What are your thoughts on the ifit app when rowing? I was thinking about using the app while using my concept 2
From one tall guy to another, thank you for your thoughts on this machine. Being 6'9", my concern is rail length. I wear 38" inseam pants but probably could get away with a 36" in a pinch. What's your inseam and have much additional rail did you have left fully extended? Thanks again!
Totally man!! Here to help! My inseam is 36 comfortably and I have more room extra on this rail than I did on Concept 2. It would definitely fit you!
@@trainingtall I'm bummed man! I tried the Hydrow today and ran out of rail! I need another inch or two (cue the laughter!). I emailed them to see if there's any adjustments I can do to make it work. We'll see.
Just got one about a month ago- absolutely love it
Hi, thanks for your videos.... can you tell me if it is available in Europe??
I'm a big "what if" person so I'm wondering how the rower would work if the company goes under or decides to stop the monthly subscription videos. Would we still be able to row and how much info would we get compared to the other rowers like the concept 2?
Thanks Austin. I’m in the market for a rowing machine but because the concept 2 has such an unknown waiting list I was tempted by the Nordictrack but keep seeing reviews that the strap breaks mid use and the Hydrow doesn’t seem to be available in Australia, and the high subscription. I guess it’s back to the wait list of the Concept 2
I got a Hydrow about a month and a half ago and absolutely love it. I've rowed before on concept2s and other but the Hydrow (for me) is just so much better of an experience - I can row much longer without getting bored (even without the classes just because of the scenery), the classes are great, the machine is super smooth and comfortable, and there's a good variety of functionality. Glad you were able to get your hands on one, I look forward to seeing you out on the leader board!
Hi: Great info. Thanks!
If I can get 15 years+ out of a C2. What do you think is the Life expectancy of the Hydrow??
Well they've only been around for a few years now but they are still holding up!!
Well that pretty much seals the deal for me. This will be a purchase of mine next year.
It's a fancy machine, and might be worth it to some people, but keep in mind that for less than half the price you can get a concept2 which is pretty much the gold standard of rowing machines and the one that almost all competitive rowers use and compare times with.
@@noisemakerman I love concept 2 as well. But with gyma being closed and with these having a variety of follow along workouts, itll keep me motivated and doing different things.
Hydro might be the reason why Peloton put off releasing that rumored rower they were suppose to release this year. Its going to be tough to beat
Suppose I choose not to renew the mandatory one-year subscription - what is still available on the machine, and in your opinion is it still worth the price? I’m wondering if you think the rower itself is superior enough - as a machine - to justify springing for this as opposed to other magnetic rowers or a concept 2. Noise is a factor we are considering.
Firstly, this machine really is not very loud! I personally use it in my apartment with no fear of disturbing neighbors. As far as the subscription, if you don't have it, all you can do is simply row with a blank screen that just shows time, stroke rate, and intensity - so it's something to consider!
As someone who likes to do really long rows like marathons and longer - are there any workouts that last that long? I'd love someone sitting there and encouraging me along the way during a 60k! :)
Thank you so much for telling us about this great machine. I’ve seen and various advertisements and I’m so excited that it’s really great. I’ve an Augletics Eight machine, have you already tested it as well?
How is the resistance provided? Assuming that since you can control it with the screen it’s probably magnetic. Or is there hydraulic resistance?
Magnetic, but it’s HIGH QUALITY magnetic and feels JUST as good as air resistance
Does that thing come apart for storage? My Concept 2 fits right in my Power Rack along with my bench and some other stuff. Really helps keep the space my workout gear takes up down to "wife approved" levels.
It doesn't
Can you compare the Hydrow to the NordicTrack rw900? I'm most interested in learning how the UI and the training programs stack up. Thanks!
I am getting my hands on the NordicTrack soon!!! very excited!!
@@trainingtall I'm very interested in your review of the Nordic Track as well. I have gone back and forth between both of these for weeks now. The overall cost of the Hydrow is almost too much to take but on the other hand, the reviews for the Nordic Track are very mixed.
@@j.castino7585 Yes I keep hearing that the strap on the Nordictrack breaks which is really dangerous
Do you have to pay for the training programs? I have a concept2. I get daily workouts in my email from the website.
It's actually a fraction of money some C2 rowers were going during covid lockdown... But I think a C2 with a tablet holder and one of the currently available rowing apps that also incorporate live rowing does the same thing. There are plenty row along videos on CZcams. The other thing is maintainance. C2 is very and cheep to fix, and they rarely break. But I can see how it can be an attractive option for casual person that want to do a workout. But since rowing is a highly technical sport, not like a bike where you just do it, I doubt many people with rowing experience will buy this over a C2.
You also did not mention that it costs $600 per year for subscription...
Maintenance, subscriptiin 😳 and lots of pressing on the screen for adjustment etc.. How is this in any way better than an RP3 and concept?
Like any sport you have to commit the time and workhard to appreciate the sport. If you must have it, I recommend you buy it used from someone who didn't stick with it. Think about it, you never want to buy 1st or 2nd generation of something expensive because you're paying them for you to be BETA tester! First, fall in love with rowing, then if you have the bucks to blow. Go for it!
if you buy C2 from Concept2, the price is the same reasonable price it's always been. actually, I purchased mine just before quarantine for under $1000 and just looked at one again for my nephew and the price has dropped $45. There is a waiting list that currently is about 6 weeks, but that's due to the Covid rush on equipment. If you search for a C2 from other sources, they're going for up to 3K. You want a piece of equipment - go to the source, cut out the middle man.
@@pt7953 I bought mine last September ona sale for $700 so can't complain, funny how eveone discovered that a rower is the best piece of exercise equipment.
Does it seem as durable as a concept 2?
This machine is much much heavier - and because they are so “new” it’s hard to tell. Concept 2 has definitely stood the test of time, however!
If a Nike Swoosh married an iPad Pro ....
Just waiting for the louboutin special edition with a red bottom 🤤
Is there an app for your smart phone linking to machine?
I like it and value your opinion but the deal breaker is the monthly charge. btw like all computers are constant upgrades needed and is this part of the service/support ? Thank you.
To be honest, I'm not sure. But one benefit is that the software can/is getting updated with new features as time goes on.
Nice intro. For future reviews I'd be interested to know if workout data can upload to a website database for analysis/tracking/sharing with a coach. Also, can you link to data analysis sites like Strava or MapMyFitness, where many people have their historical data stored?
If you have an opinion of integrating the screen onto the unit (like Hydrow and Peloton) vs. linking to a separate computer (like Zwift does with cycling) please share.
Is there online racing in the future of Hydrow?
Howdy - at this point, you can definitely connect to Strava, but I don't think you can download the data into like a excel or csv format. They are a relatively new company though and it really does feel like they're releasing new things every week and were very responsive (and honest!) about feedback / suggestions I had for them, so if you suggested that, they may put it on their roadmap
Looks like you're rowing in the opposite direction to the trainer on the screen. Can the view be altered to either a split screen or somehow have the trainer rowing in the same direction.
They switch views throughout the row, so sometimes the view will be from the bow, sometimes the stern, and sometimes wider views.
So what your saying is that if I buy this rower I will have no more use to watch your channel? Dude, your aiding in your own existential threat! I bought 2 Concept II’s because of you!!!! Is the Hydro going to get me sub 6:30 on my 2k?
I've had my hydrow since Feb and have come to this channel quite a few times since then to clarify form issues.
What about the Ergatta? Know nothing, but it is a water based rowing machine (I like the sound) that also has a lot of the screen thing going on. Will you test it for me as another tall rower?
I will do my best to try to get my hands on one, man!!
Seems fun, but at that price I doubt that the following will grow like concept 2. And the rowing community as a whole is amazing... i don't think a special rower will change that. But also, records done on an indoor rower are done on a concept 2... so wouldn't that mean the elite rowers will also stick to concept 2?
I read your “disclosure” spiel in the description prepared to be disappointed because you’re right, this does seem sponsored. I’m glad you’re up front about this, and I’m glad it’s not. This will be a cool machine
Have there been any comparisons between the Hydrow and the Aviron? I’m leaning more towards the Hydrow as I see more reviews
Aviron video coming up in like 20 minutes
I have one (HYDROW) and it's amazing!!!!
Looks amazing. Too bad that they don't sell nor ship to Europe :(
Maybe you should check out augletics if you are from Germany, Austria, Switzerland or Netherlands ;)
The biggest question I have is how many decibels on a high wattage row? It seemed pretty loud, but probably not as loud as a C2. I love the C2 in the gym but at home in my complex, I have to be sensitive to my neighbors below, so I row on the Assault Elite Rower (durable and quiet). But this one really intrigues me because of the integration between the rower, the community, and the instructors. Plus, aesthetically, it's really nice.
Next video coming out is a decibels comparison between concept 2 vs Hydrow vs water rower
@@trainingtall Thank you! Wonderful review... I'm very intrigued.
can you add multiple users?
Can you explain setting the drag factor on another video?
Can you do a review on the LIT Method Machine? There’s no one doing reviews on it.
This one must be good!
Thought the rower had a dump valve then realised it was just him breathing out 🤣🤣🤣
Can you make a video on the biorower
The only thing stopping me from purchasing this today is that I don't have any room in my house. I'm seriously considering tossing the couch to make room for it.
Would love my videos with the Hydrow. I am having trouble engaging my legs!!!
I will try to make more Hydrow specific vids :)
Is there tension throughout the pull? The one question holding me back from purchasing.
Tea Vault yup! Totally feels just as good if not better than the tension from Concept 2
I don’t make so complicated workout. I do the 2k training with 42 strokes per minute and then I sprint at 400m with 72 strokes per minute trying to survive.
How close is the water resistance compared to the real thing?
Water resistance in rowing machines does not accurately simulate rowing on the water in my opinion. The magnetic resistance of the Hydrow simulates rowing on the water very well I think
Can you review the Ergatta?
That would be great! though I just ordered my ergatta and would be sad if the review is bad. Ha ha!
