An underrated song from the album this song was on is "Zanzibar"--it changes directions and briefly goes into a jazzy solo. Well worth a reaction.

When I was very young, my parents went to "The Piano Man" tour I think, it was a set-up with dualing pianos across the stage with Elton John and Billy Joel working together. They said it was the greatest show they had ever seen, and they saw all of the classic rock greats through the years so that is high praise.

The song is superficially about the protagonist mocking a woman with a severe hangover for her intoxicated escapades around town, making numerous social and verbal faux pas while high on alcohol and drugs ("But now you just don't remember all the things you said / And you're not sure you want to know / I'll give you one hint, honey; you sure did put on a show!"). The song makes reference to late 1970s nouveau riche fads such as Elaine's restaurant and Halston. During a Q&A session at Florida State University in 1996, Joel stated the song is about someone he was very close to, and also about himself. In an interview in 2006, Joel said, "I read that the song 'Big Shot' is said to be about a date I had with Bianca Jagger. I never had a date with Bianca Jagger." But in an interview with Howard Stern on November 16, 2010, Joel said the song was written after having dinner with Mick and Bianca Jagger. Joel told Stern that while writing the lyrics to "Big Shot," he was thinking of Mick singing the song to Bianca.
Another version: This song is definately, exactly as the lyrics state. he went out drinking with friends. he was tying to impress everyone with how much he drank. he woke up the next morning feeling like shit and looked himself in the mirror and thought "you had to be a big shot and drink that much." I heard Billy Joel say in an interview that he woke up hungover the next day, remembering what an ass he made of himself the night before and stared in the mirror and said "You had to be a big shot, didn't you!"

I’ve heard him say he was thinking of Mick Jagger when he was singing this. I can certainly hear a Mick Jagger sound to it in places. I can hear an Elton style to the piano though. I don’t think it was written about any one person, but just experiences and even thinking it about himself when looking in the mirror the next morning.

Harri, yet another great review. I am living on 100% disability and really wish I could join your Patreon family but $1300 a month is so very tight. Billy Joel has an AMAZING hidden gem called "Downeaster Alexa" about the collapse of the once profitable northeastern U.S. fishing trade. It is beautiful, it is poetic, it really makes you feel like you and Billy are right there on the boat with the crew, most of all it is heart rending...
P.S. I definitely hear the early Elton John in the song. Great call.
