- A fancy Hollywood voice guy with throat cancer shares his story of the power of joy through “his” characters.
Maybe you don’t know Rob Paulsen, but you know Pinky and the Brain, Animaniacs, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius, and most of the other animated projects that Paulsen has been part of as a voice actor for nearly three decades. With over 2,000 (yes, that’s right) half-hour programs and dozens of films, video games, and other animated media to his credit, Paulsen has been one of the hardest working, most in-demand, and most beloved voice artists in the industry, earning (so far) a Daytime Emmy and Peabody, three times winning the Annie Award (for voice actors). He's also the host of the Talkin’ Toons podcast on Nerdist, a cancer survivor, and the author of the book "Voice Lessons: How a Couple of Ninja Turtles, Pinky, and an Animaniac Saved My Life." This line really engraved its way in my soul
It speaks very highly to Rob's level of skill in voice acting when he is able to enact his own censorship when saying "you ****ing turtles aren't so tough", and I have to backtrack and listen again because I could not tell whether the TED talk censored him or whether he manually muted his own syllable. Man, he's good.
I cried when he explained Turtle Power.
It's in even more detail in his book. And if you listen to the audiobook (narrated by the man himself), you can hear his voice break slightly as he tells it too. He's amazing. 💗

No day would be able to match the day I meet Rob Paulsen
I love his respect for the fandom. When he gave that child his jacket, that sold it for me. Not everyone realizes the power of cartoons until they are in his place. Never underestimate the power of a franchise fandom, they exist. They're all out there people, you just have to find it, luckily the internet has made them much easier to find now.
Stories like these are why I get so angry when people, especially the studios who own the franchises, are so dismissive and openly hostile towards their fans when it's often the studio who is in the wrong for treating the franchise with disrespect or making unpopular changes that the fans speak up about. It doesn't even matter if I'm part of that franchise's fandom or not, if the people in charge disrespect the fandom by disrespecting the franchise, I'm gonna get mad about it because the studios have a duty and obligation to honor the fans whose loyalty and investments (both emotional and financial) that made those franchises successful to begin with.
You don't poop where you eat and you don't bite the hand that feeds you, which are exactly what these studios do when they treat the fans poorly.
As much as I like Yakko, Pinky, and Carl, my favorite character he voices is Mark Chang on The Fairly Oddparents! Such a funny concept for a character! An outer space alien with the an American first name, an Asian last name, and the Dude voice (the Dude voice was Robs' idea)! Rob Paulsen is such a great voice actor and human being!! Love him!!

Please, I was bored one day and the craziest question came to me 'If Rob Paulsen played Rafael, what other action cartoon characters did he played?' right, so I'm looking up on google and his character voice list then my jaw dropped,he is also the voice of Throttle of one of the many cartoons I was totally obsessed with, Biker Mice From Mars!!! I lost my mind was screaming inside like a total fangirl lol, the reason I was so obsessed is that the meaning behind the show to me was no matter where from, respect those you love and cherish and where you live and kick tails of those that take our planet for granted, wish I could meet him to hear him say 'Lets Rock and Ride's and 'Ride free citizen' that would so make my life lol, love you Mr.Paulsen 💕

Oh man I never knew Raphael/Donatello had a stage 3 throat cancer until Rob mentioned he had cancer in this video and I quickly googled it and sadly, it turns out to be true. Thank God, his cancer was in remission.

Jesse Fehr hey i don't know what is your problem but I really don't know Rob have cancer so I googled it to see what's missing and yes, he was right. I never said he was lying.
I worked backstage at this event, i was just off screen to the left, and got to meet him after his talk. He is amazing. We talked for about 15 minutes, i told him how cool he is to me and how big a role he played in my childhood. he said i was the cool one for supporting him all these years. he gave me a hug, we got a picture together and told me "thanks so much, from the water tower boys!" in his Yakko voice. Such a pure-hearted, kind, guy!

I got the chance to talk to Rob after FanExpo 2018. I was nervous because I was sure he'd heard everything I had to say before, but he was so nice. He told me everything I said was just right, and he did a bit of Yakko for me. The following spring, I saw him and Randy Rogel in concert. It was an amazing night.
I especially love Anthony's story. I am also autistic and have social anxiety, not to that extent, but I do find comfort in my favorite fictional characters, so I can imagine how he must have felt. Maybe someday I'll get the chance to talk to him again, but if not, I still wish him all the best. He deserves it, and I'm so excited for the new Animaniacs episodes.

My autograph from Rob is one of my most prized possessions. He actually answered my fan letter I sent him as a kid. Raphael has always been my favorite Turtle as the character helped me cope with a lot of bullying. This video is wonderful, Rob is truly an amazing person!
Rob Paulsen is a national treasure. 1987 Raphael has been my favorite cartoon character since I was a little kid (and still is to this day!). I've loved his wit and his ability to crack a joke at even the most dire situation, and it's great to see that those qualities I admire are present in Rob Paulsen himself.
Thanks, Mr. Psulsen, for helping me find my own voice, and for lots of great times (and hopefully many great times ahead!). Turtle Power forever. :-)

I got a Cameo from this man for my partner, and he is legitimately one of our best humans.
Had a chance to shoot Rob at a convention years ago, he was wonderful to all the attendees, my interns and most of which my family who came to meet him among others.....he walks the walk and talks the talk....Great guy. What he shows in the video about how people react to the characters i witnessed multiple times that weekend and it was overwhelming......beautiful stuff.

Rob (@yakkopinky) is truly a kind, genuine soul. I was lucky enough to meet him in 2017. We got to talk about cartoons, music, life, and got to sing "Yakko's World" together. To this day, it blows my mind that it still happened. He even sent me a birthday shout out. This talk was so inspiring to hear. I love his book and his courage to share his experiences with us.
The best voice actors are inspiring both behind a microphone and in person.
