How to Plant Bare Root Bleeding Heart from Costco

  • This video is full of helpful information, but that doesn’t make up for my big WHOOPS! My camera was being repaired, and I struggled to hold my cell phone steady without a tripod. My sincere apologies for the shaky and blurry parts. I thought about filming again, but that would have been a horrible thing to do to the plants! I hope you forgive me on this one! Now, the content. Dicentra formosa (aka bleeding heart) is a great shade plant with ferny foliage and long-lasting flowers. It’s a Pacific Northwest native plant that loves dry shade and survives in USDA zones 3 to 9. The foliage will die back in the heat of summer (unless it’s in deep shade), but don’t worry because it will come back the following year. I like to underplant with violets and sweet woodruff for a pink, purple, and white combo. This cultivar, called “Luxuriant” is one of the best because of its vigor and size. The flowers are deep pink, and the foliage has a slight blue cast. Other cultivars have bluer foliage, but I keep coming back to this garden staple. They are tough, but you still need to plant them correctly and establish them the first year. After that, they can survive on their own. Here in the Pacific Northwest, zone 8, they can be planted about one inch deep, but remember to plant deeper if you’re in a colder area. I was really impressed with the quality of the bare-root plants from Costco, supplied by Longfield Gardens. These dicentra were really healthy. I hope they continue to grow them for Costco because the price was excellent, about $12 for five plants.

    My package has sat on the porch for a month. Along with other plants I need to get planting. It’s not that I am not planting; it’s that I buy way too many plants at once. Making progress… I cleaned out my DIY double 5 gallon strawberry bucket and planted up with fresh herbs and more strawberries. Got half my chives and day Lillies divided and dinner done a week late…
    My husband never promised me a rose garden so I made my own and expanded it… funny how he became interested and is excited to help and offers to go pick up Fast food or will make sandwiches.
    Thanks for the tutorial 😊

    I have or has white patches on my non growing bleeding hearts plant. I think I killed the mold. I noticed it on the bottom roots too. Should I replant it or is there no hope for the plant? My other one died too cause of fungus gnats.

      Sorry about your situation. This has never happened to me so I did some research and found a fabulous article by Epic Gardening. He's dealt with fungus gnats and I agree with his recommendations. I linked the article below. If you decide to toss them, you might first consider throughly cleaning off the roots and potting up in a sterile mix. At the very least it'd be a cool experiment. I'd love to hear back about your decision and results! Also, please let everyone know what you think of his article. Hope it goes well.

      @@SuzyDinglesGarden the gnats are dead. I will try and replant them in better soil. How do I clean the roots? The ones infected with gnats and white mildew.

      @@martianleader1to clean the roots shake off all the soil and rinse really well in cool (not cold) water. Then plant in a sterile soil-less medium, like peat. Replant into soil when you see new healthy leafy growth. It's critical not to overwater. Good luck!

      @@SuzyDinglesGarden are the roots suppose to look very dry? I don't even see any green or white. Was like it when I planted em. Worried I either planted to late or bought dead roots.

    • @SuzyDinglesGarden
      @SuzyDinglesGarden  Před rokem

      @@martianleader1 yes. They might look dry. Bare root should show at least a few new leaves within 6 months after planting. If not, I'd give it a few more months then declare it dead UNLESS it was a super small root. If tiny root, it could take a few years to show growth. In future, look for plants with obvious crowns, and when you plant it make sure some of the crown is above soil line.

  • @Meskarune
    @Meskarune Před 3 měsíci

    I didn't realize these have a crown, I buried it, will the plant be ok?

    • @SuzyDinglesGarden
      @SuzyDinglesGarden  Před 3 měsíci

      Depends on how deeply it's buried. Is there any growth showing? If not and if no freezes are expected, I'd carefully pull the soil away until I see either some growth or the crown. You can replant it also, but try not to dislodge the soil around the roots and water well afterwards. Good luck! Would love to know the outcome.
