  • Are you wondering how to plant irises correctly so they thrive for years to come? Catherine, Horticulturist for Colorado Yard Care, demonstrates how to plant iris rhizomes at the correct depth so you get an abundance of flowers, not just leaves! Not only does she cover how deep to plant irises, but she discusses how to orient iris leaves when planting them, how to situate the roots for rapid establishment and common mistakes to avoid. This method works both for potted iris plants and bare root iris rhizomes. Use Catherine's techniques and you'll have a healthy iris plant and lots of flowers each growing season!

I’ve dug up iris bulbs and thrown them in the woods on either side of my yard.
There are blooming iris in the woods on either side of my yard.
    You can’t kill them!

@@charlescoker7752 The sources I buy from online, usually begin shipping in July (suggesting we plant them July-September to let the roots get well-underway before colder weather). THAT SAID, I have planted at this time of the year in the past (and will again now). I've had some of those (Spring planted) bloom by the end of the season, others did not. The worst thing I had been doing was planting the rhizomes too low. I've had better luck since I stopped doing that.

I have grown iris for years. I would have separated the two iris, cut off the mother rhizome & cut the leaves into a fan shape to keep them from falling over. The one on the left looks like it is two iris. You do keep the top of the rhizome on top of the soil, make a little mound to put the roots in the ground & I also trim the roots a bit.

It is September 17, 2021, and I will be planting irises in the morning and I wanted a CZcams instruction video, and yours was the first result of my "how to plant iris bulbs" criteria
and it will be the only one that I will need to look at. Your instructions are very simple, straightforward, informative, and very helpful! And because of your video I now know that what I had previouly referred to as bulbs are actually called rhizomes.
I'm an American living in the eastern part of Austria right on the border with Slovakia and the climate here is pretty much the same as upstate New York where I am originally from, so right now is the perfect time for planting irises.

By far the best video on planting iris I have seen!! Living in the mountains of Colorado myself, my mainstay garden flower, besides native wild flowers, is a large array of iris. The advantage to this is that I get a great variety of various colors that bloom profusely and none of the wild critters eat them! (Definitely a problem for us mountain folk.). Thank you for such a good, clear explanation of the correct way to plant them.
