Bleeding Hearts are so dear to me as they remind me of my Bushia growing huge bushy Bleeding Hearts in containers in Chicago. Now I think of her every day with my Bleeding Hearts. Thank you for showing how to take care of them! You are very interesting. Now I want to get that knife!!
My mother in law has a big bleeding heart in her backyard and she was just saying this summer how it hardly blooms anymo, I'll try dividing it for her in the spring, plus I'll get a bleeding heart for myself. Thanks Yuliya😀👍
Bleeding Hearts was one of the first plants I bought when I started gardening. They're so easy to maintain. I also take the seeds and scatter them and get new plants that way. Great video. Thanks.

Hmm, I wonder if the flowers this spring dropped seeds, I did not notice seed pods. I just noticed the flowers shrivel up and fall after a coupe of weeks

I was told perennials need division when they get congested and produce fewer flowers. I wouldn’t have divided this plant seeing how big and full of flowers it was in spring. Unless ofc one wants more plants, or relocate it, or it’s too big.
Anyone else notice how awesome her soil is? We're lucky in NJ. Mostly, the soil here is terrific.
And very acidic, you can grow plants that I can only dream of or struggle with in my clay soil 👍🏽
@@Manuela-pv4nr yep. I can't tell you how many naturally blue hydrangea Macrophylla plants I see. Also? Tomatoes and berries are a piece of cake here.
Mine soil is the same in Maryland and I have sand mix in due to being on the Eastern Shore.
@@cherylgreenfarb8044 my father had tremendous success with outdoor gardening and not just his vegetable garden. Everything seemed to just take off. When he had problems with a particular plant, he just substituted something else. He also had a spouse and a bunch of kids so he wasn't a slave to the garden. I think our soil was, in no small part, a reason for his success.
It is structurally great soil but loses nitrogen so fast if I don’t replenish. Every time I do a soil test in some part of the garden it’s low in N. A lot of soils in NJ have been worked by farmers from centuries ago, before that it was very rocky. I did some investigation around here there were many farms. So interesting I may do a video 😊

I have a fairly large Bleeding Heart plant in the shade area near Ferns and Hosta's . I have NEVER thought of dividing it ! Shame on me . I am in zone 6 ...so maybe I will wait until the Spring to divide it . Thank you Yulia for all the great advice !

I must say I did not realize how tricky this is to do. Thank you for bringing this to our attention! And, thank you for doing the same with the bearded irises. I know that these irises - unlike bleeding heart - are tough, but it really helped give me the confidence I needed. Now, we are enjoying drifts of remontant irises - back in bloom! Wow!

Thank you for another great video, you explain everything wonderfully! I love bleeding hearts & have MANY of the golden ones that you mentioned, they are my absolute favorite! They contrast brilliantly with my pink creeping phlox (also my fav) along with my purple tulips, daffodils, & blue muscari, in Spring & last practically all summer in my PA zone 6, I think in part due to my additions (like you) of my homemade "black gold" compost. I never thought to divide, mine are only several years old ,so thanks to this video I will definitely be dividing in the future. Also you are as beautiful as your garden! Love ALL your videos! 😊

I bought a small bleeding heart about 4 yrs. By the second year it was so huge and too big for the spot. It was in full sun on a strip next to my driveway. It did beautifully. I dug it up in fall last year, brutalized the poor thing and put it in a shadier larger area. Last spring it came up beautifully but again got too big for the spot. So I just trimmed it up a bit. I put a pot with a string bean plant in front of it when it started to die back. Worked out perfect. My point is do not be afraid to divide or move plants, I've moved the same plant 3 or 5 times in the same season and they usually do great. I'm pretty rough with them too. They are tougher than we think. Yuliya thanks for the great video.

Thanks for showing this. I have a rather large shade area in the garden where nothing grows. I finally decided to get some hostas, but wanted a companion plant. So I looked around, and looked also at costs, and decided to get some dicentra spectibilis, and in front of them (next to the hostas) put a few Huchera of various colors. I chose to get only white bleeding hearts because another color would clash with the huchera leaves (sorry, I am a real color weirdo). I love the white ones though. Just seeing how easy it is to divide them takes all the stress out of a new plant! Thanks!

We had beautiful bleeding hearts at our old house in Denville, NJ. Now I live in the Poconos and found neighbors with bleeding hearts, and I got some cuttings! Going to definitely try to grow my own!
Do they grow from cuttings, or only division? If from cuttings, which part?

Thanks for your videos. Bleeding heart doesn't die.. it keeps coming out from under my paving. So I'm going to try move it.
My favorite is Boothmans Variety. The leaves are a little lighter, but they're more sun and heat tolerant.

Oddly my Dicentra Spectabilis does not die down during the summer in zone 6. They stay mostly green. I'm not sure if I water it just enough to keep it happy or what
So far this is an awesome video. I just want to throw out that I believe that is an invasive worm, know as an Asian jumping worm.
Good to see. My bleeding heart plants are not as big as yours, but Inwanted to move them, and was afraid to after heating the roots are tender. This takes away my fear.

Love your garden, especially how you use native plants. Do you leave the dead stalks/leaves in your bed or do you send them to the compost pile?
I leave most grasses and seedheads for the winter and remove early March.

Mine started blooming the end of April and it is now middle of May and they are dying off. Will they bloom anymore this year? It hasn't even gotten very warm here in Ohio.

I bought a bleeding heart ❤️ in spring and i planted it in an area that turned out to get a lot more sun than i thought ( i had just moved) but it never „disappeared „ in the summer and is still showing foliage , should I move it to a shadier location? I will keep this video in mind when it comes to dividing the plant , thank you 🙏
See how it does. In my climate we have pretty hot and sunny summers so they must be grown in shade. If you further north they may take little more sun
If I want the plant to be large, should I not cut it back at the end of the year, or does it need to be cut back? Also, it seems to be growing wide instead of tall, does it need to be on a trellis/support? This is the 2nd year with the plant. Last year it did not grow at all, I was worried it would not make it, but this spring it has taken off, and bloomed a bunch. Can I encourage anither round of blooms?
Hi, just came here to learn how to and was surprised they are happy in shade. Mine are in the bright sun but an over eager crop of crocosmia populated their space and must provide the necessary shade. So, I am just saying that there is a companion idea for you. Thank you for the video.

Ferns, epimediums, hellebores are all amazing and deer resistant. If you don’t have deer hosta, Solomon seal and ligularia are lovely

I've had my bleeding heart for about 8 years and it hardly has any blooms on it...is there a fertilizer I should use on it? I don't think it needs to be divided because its not a very big plant...
I use plant tone. Mine benefit from yearly compost and manure application in spring

Absolutely, be careful people alter photos all the time. Bleeding hearts come in pink, white, red. Foliage can be yellow or lime color
