- This piece of music is thought to be the earliest written music for Virginal or Harpsichord. This piece was written upon the death of Lady Carey's husband who was a courtier in the court of Henry the 8th. Lady Carey was the sister of Anne Boleyn. The music is performed by Linda Rogers on an Italian Virginal, built by her husband, Donald Rogers.

Surely, the best all-time composer is
“Anonymous”
No one throws a funeral party quite like Henry VIII.
I guess, Henry VIII got to practice funeral parties on 4 out of 6 of his wives!
This is the right instrument to play this kind of music, delicious performance, beautiful background.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. So glad you enjoyed it.❤
In the film ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ (1971) this is the very piece that then-Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth I) was depicted as performing on a virginal in her ‘close-confin’d’ rooms in the Tow’r of London when being incarcerated by her half-sister (‘Bloody’) Mary Tudor after 17 March 1554… to keep her spirits up no doubt
She was an excellent harpsichord player throughout her life. This piece would have been written during her fathers reign. He was also a good composer and had quite a collection of recorders.
Elizabeth played “very well, for a queen” apparently … good old Cobbett reversed the epithets applied to her and her half-sister Mary … “Good Queen Mary” and “Bloody Bess” … all the same, I think your playing is brilliant … thanks a lot!
Wow, somehow I have never heard this before, and also what a wonderful instrument.
Strange....while listening to this early music, it also sounds like today's music with its repeating bass and improvise-like upper voices..like jazz too with the occasional chords. Richard
Indeed. Or maybe it's just that this is a way of doing music which is so well tried and tested that it has never really disappeared.
Richard.

A really addictive and enjoyable piece of music. Trance for the Dark Ages. LOLS

Lively, fun music.
Beautiful playing of this old favorite...later-in-life harpsichord & organ student here; (prof. bassoonist & singer in pre-covid times)...I love the unique dark stain and case decoration you chose for this charming little virginal! Thanks so much for sharing. :)
Thanks so much for listening. Glad you enjoyed it.
I apologize, but I can never not read that as "My Lady Carey's Dump".
But far more pleasing to the ears than most!
I've listed to this dozens of times. One of my favorite early pieces, and your pacing/phrasing is PERFECT.
Wow, thank you!
Yes, this really does sound like something that could be written today
Really, like what exactly?
Such beautiful music!
OMG Linda. Your husband built that? He is so clever & you play that piece beautifully just like Elaine Camparone.
Thank you so much. I’m glad you enjoyed it
I love this piece so so much, great playing. But oh my goodness, that's the cutest virginal I've ever seen! What a lucky wife you are.
Thanks so much.
Thank you so very much. I love this tune and this is my favorite version.
Thank you for listening and I’m so glad that you enjoyed it.
Cómo se llama??
Wonderful and weird piece; I never understood it's musical provenance, since it seems quite unlike anything else of the period, there is some prescient and minimalist in it. Thanks for the lovely performance!
Thanks for listening
your sound is heard in Australia.. beautiful. so glad I came upon... Thank you ..
Thanks so much.
C’est merveilleux!
Merci beaucoup
Wonderful pace to this interpretation, lets you soak in it without it being tepid. Thank you.
Thanks for your comment. I like to conjure the feeling of a lament. It’s interesting even slower sometimes

Incredible song and sound 😮👍
Oh what a sweet instrument you have! Thank you.
This is an absolute banger. Set it to a sick beat and people would be bouncing
Absolutely fire track 🔥
Absolutely wonderful. Thank You. This is very motivating to 'start' music, it looks so 'easy' to play... On a charming instrument.
Dompe is the perpetuum mobile.
Thanks Lady ! Nice Renaissance 's record. 👏👏👏
what a gem 💎✨… thanks much 💜

Very good Linda!
I just learned about this piece. Sounds great!
Also, How does one just happen to have a husband that can build his wife a virginal? Im super jealous.
This was so beautiful. Thank you for sharing this piece with us.

Couldn't find a virginal performance, thank you for making this!

As you are learning it on piano do yourself a favour and listen to Anton Batagov playing it on piano. Unhurried and beautiful.😊

For some reason I do believe that this is exactly how this tune was played back in the day. Its just sound natural to me, compared to other version I found online. Very nicely played!

Originally I intended to check on Dvorak‘s Dumky Trio I heard in a concert yesterday. What a wonderful extra CZcams supplied me with!

Glenda Jackson, waiting to be queen, plays that tune in the BBC six episodes Elisabeth R. It was the first time I heard it and I like it so much that I tried to find the score.
She was my favorite Elizabeth.

Bellissimo brano!!!

thanks,
Bravissimo!!
It's so compact!
Very well done, and such a tiny virginal! :)
Thank you. It’s an Italian Virginal. Same size keyboard but a pentagonal case, not square. Thanks for listening
This is really jamin'!
Nice that they randomly decided to start writing the music down at this point.
Ah Lady Carey! Poor lady came to such a gruesome end! But she stood up to the trend of the day and refused to change her faith and she prayed for the King Henry VIII. the Careys were long and beloved friends of the Tudors and those same betrayed their friendship for their own pleasure and mad devises!
Le raffinement d'antan c'était en même dans une certaine économie de moyens.Merci pour le partage.
I have gotten addicted to this piece of music.🎶🎶🎶🎶
Does this have any lyrics to it??? 🤔
You are an excellent performer!!!
I have been playing piano for many years, would it be easy enough to play the harpsichord or your virginal??? It's a truly amazing instrument!!! I think I read somewhere that your husband builds instruments and you're the performer...great way to teach the general public music history.... even some musicians don't know their history.
Thank you very much. May God bless you and your family!!
Miss Monique 🙂🌷💗🕊️
Thank you for listening and for your lovely comment. As a pianist, you certainly would have an advantage for playing the harpsichord, as it is also a keyboard instrument. It does, however, have a completely different mechanism, as it plucks the string rather than hammers like a piano. It doesn’t have dynamics so the touch and technique are very different from piano. I hope you have an opportunity to play a harpsichord in the future. Thanks again.
@@drogers447 I know of a harpsichord here in Middletown RI that is privately owned and is unfortunately untunable. Is it very difficult to build one?? This is something that my brother could do.
If it is affordable.
Thanks again. May God bless you and your family.
Miss Monique 🙂🌷💗🕊️
There are kits for different types of harpsichords and virginal at Zuckermann Harpsichords in Connecticut. zhi.net
You might join on Facebook, the group”harpsichords free, cheap and for sale to good homes. They show many instrument for sale and give knowledgeable advice for buyers. If your brother is handy, you might want to check out the instrument in RI. Working on regulating and repairing an existing instrument would be a good way to learn . Keep in mind that harpsichords do not stay in tune and must be tuned often, like a big guitar. Players tune their own instruments. I wish you luck and hope you find what you would like.
@@drogers447 Thanks again for all the great information. It would be "very cool" to have a harpsichord!!!
Blessings to you and your family 🌹💗🎶🎉 Miss Monique
“Escandalo”😄🎵🎶
There’s a lute tabulators version from the time, as well.
Imagine teleporting whoever composed this piece to the middle of an Eddie Van Halen concert
So this is a Renaissance piece from the time of Henry VIII, he of 6 wives. It is not Early Music at all, but it is in a Dorian mode. It's lovely & worth a listen.
Fizwilliam virginal book?.. /
Instrument with a pleasant tone and an agile keyboard.
I like.
Nice playing. Wonderful sound. Handsome little instrument! Thanks.
Thank you so much
What a nice little instrument. Sounds much more pleasant than a harpsichord. Fuller richer sound, not so "plinky."
What a beautiful piece! Please share the sheet music.
You can download it from IMSLP. Enjoy
звучит ну очень актуально, и кажется с текстом на французском или немецком сейчас это мог бы быть отличный поп-трек.
и забавно, что даже сбоку и со спины видно, как исполнительница кайфует 😎
Where can I find a similar instrument to purchase? I love it!!! 🖤 Beautifully played piece!
This Virginal was made from a Zuckermann kit. Also there is a Facebook page called “harpsichords free, cheap or for sale to good homes” that might lead you to a small spinet or virginal. Thanks for listening 0:04
ドメニコ・スカルラッティ、ヨハン・ゼバスティアン・バッハにこの鍵盤と音響システムを見せてあげたらなんという答えが返ってくるか聞いてみたいです🎵
They were very familiar with virginals and wrote for harpsichord. There is no sound system. This is an acoustic instrument. Thank you for listening
This one is more compact inn the front-back dimension than those I have previously seen pictures of, but nevertheless sounds good even though it doesn't seem to have much space for a sound board.
💖🌼
Now this is a good DUMP-EH
This is marvelous ...might you be from anywhere here in New England?
Thank you so much. I’m from NY but live now in Tennessee.
Lovely piece of early music and a lovely tone. Beautifully played. Is the box register glued to the underside of the soundboard? I think that kills the tone. I wonder if yours is different, it sounds so good.
Thank you for your kind words about my playing and the instrument. The box register is glued to the bottom of the soundboard. It took ALOT of time to regulate the instrument in order to get the best sound.
I’ve made a few virginals. My latest is using a thin upper register under the soundboard to see if the tone is better. The other problem is the bass keys are very short. No getting round that.
My husband built the box guides on a CNC machine. They are very light, which helps the sound
@@drogers447 Thanks. That is interesting to know. How deep was the top one please
This was beautiful, and had a very marked rhythm. I don't think renaissance music gets the exposure that baroque gets.
pretty
1520! Esto tocaba Colon en sus carabelas!
One thing I learned, when as a music major, there are no new musical ideas. They recycle and combine existing ones over and over. As old as this little composition is, it sounds as if it could be part of a modern film score.
Wonderful looking and sounding instrument. What are the differences between this and a spinet?
The difference between a virginal and a spinet is the orientation of the strings. On a virginal, the strings run sideways from the keyboard. On a spinet, the strings run at an angle. This makes for the difference in sound. ❤️
Is there a youtube video with more info about your husband's AMAZING harpsichord? Thanks! 😃
Thank you so much for your kind comments. I’m glad you enjoyed my playing and my instruments. All of the instruments featured on my CZcams channel were made by my husband Donald. There is a Flemish harpsichord, a French double, a Neapolitan Italian harpsichord, a virginal and most recently a small pipe organ. I hope you subscribe to my channel. Coming soon is a beautiful little Octave harpsichord. Thanks again.
I have never, to my knowledge at least, have seen a harpsichord this small! I had no idea harpsichords were made thusly. Two octaves? Is this what was once called a "virginal?"
As for the music, a very enjoyable piece to hear, and probably to play. And the composer is unknown? This predates Johann Sebastian Bach by more than a hundred years. Late Renaissance, perhaps? You might look into the music of Henry VIII. He was known to compose a small piece of music on occasion.
Thanks for listening. Yes, this is a virginal. It has 54 notes. Virginals are a type of harpsichord and were very popular in the 16 th Century.
That was enchanting. Can someone please tell me what instrument that is?
It’s a Virginal, which is in the harpsichord family. Thanks for listening
You should include the approximate year in the description..
Beautiful by the way
