Catalina Vicens, performs
"Rondeau" from "Tres Novas Cantigas" (2014) by American composer Carson Cooman
"Tres Novas Cantigas (2014) was written for Catalina Vicens, an inspiring virtuosa of medieval-era keyboard instruments. The title (in Galician) means “three new songs.” The three movements move freely between old and new modality-a contemporary dialogue
with the past" - www.carsoncooman.com
Pythagorean tuning
Recorded with Zoom H4n and Nikon D3300
Switzerland, September 2017 - Hudba
Impressively tight timing between bellows work and right hand (how do you get such long phrases!!) and such joy in the playing, it's like you are singing everything (well, you are!). Unusual delicate effects I've never heard anyone else get out of any portative. Utterly lovely.
That would be perfect for my tiny cathedral.
Just get a harmonium, more convenient
@@saharatul Or a bigger cathedral.
@@saharatul except harmoniums all sound utterly awful.
This week I have seen two instruments I've never seen before, and this is the third - and I want EACH ONE!! Santa, please take note.
What are the others?
dont leave us hanging.. please tell us wat the first two instruments were
@Gennady Golovkin The first was I believe called a cucurbit, a long flute-like instrument with a sound like a gentle bagpipe, only without the drone. The other - don't know the name, but a stringed instrument, bowed but with a keyboard for fingering - perhaps six strings? Capable of great virtuosity and wonderful sound.
@@johnsheehan7348 i just bought a cucurbit online. I don't know how long delivery will take. Have you heard the duduk? It is amazing
@@anatborodin5907 Actually heard it - I am living in Amman, Jordan and not long ago there was a concert at which that and an Oud were played with some other instruments. Armenian evening
There's nothing cooler than watching someone play an instrument and really get into the emotion of the music.
One of the most powerful and accurate statements I have ever heard regarding the connection between the performer and listener! 👍
My ST. CECILIA Statue (Patroness of Music - I'm a Soprano) is carrying a Portative Organ. But I never heard one until now. How beautifully she plays it! What a haunting soft sound!
Hearing an instrument like this helps me to understand how "modal" music was once such a big thing.
Love how she believes the song, she tells the story and enjoys it.
@PLEASENINTENDONT
@Daniel Del Valle You're acting more arrogant than anyone else here.
@Daniel Del Valle Life is a subjective experience. Everyone is ignorant of most things, and everyone has their own perspectives on everything.
I'm not telling you that you can't speak your mind, but I think you've chosen a very superficial position. It doesn't matter how people judge music. Music is not important beyond personal preference.
@Daniel Del Valle You seem to misunderstand me. What I'm telling you isn't a lesson, and I have no reason to care about your education or supposed qualifications on the study of music. What I'm attempting to explain is that there's absolutely no reason to expect anyone to believe that your opinion on the matter of music is important, and that is because all value is subjective.
@Daniel Del Valle Didn't your degrees teach you how to behave in internet? Your language for mocking people is quite disgraceful. Why so angrily agitated all the time and overreacting to little things? "He just wanted teach a little kid a lesson." Yeah, right. There is absolutely nothing wrong about it. I rather found something ill in your comments. Nobody cares about you resume because it's not very helpful here. Not even educational. It's also very childish that you making the issue like American vs Something else.. where individual differences count more. (I don't agree on bashing European like that either ) I'm Japanese living in the United States, but it doesn't matter I'm American or not, what I say in more important than who I am (and how many degrees I have.. sigh...)
Yeah, you are worse than a little kid here. You need a serious lesson.
A person who got REAL education never acts like you do.
Such big sound from a small package. The instruments of the medieval period produced such a wide variety of sound. Nothing simple or primitive about it. Thanks for sharing her skills and the organ as well.
Amazingly played! The full use of the bellows really adds so much! If it sounds so wonderful now, I can't even imagine what it will be like when it's all grown up.
this is the Platypus of music instruments. I love it
I was surprised, because I saw the small oggan first time . I am 72 years old and live in Japan. First time.
Thank you "you cube", give me present such music & picture. 小林憲一郎 2019/12/26
Awesome!
God I cannot get enough of this piece, this performance, this instrument!!!! I have been a lover of the portative organ for years, but this piece just makes the instrument SING!!! Beautiful!!!
OMG, I'm smitten and on a multitude of levels!
It's like providing the audio to a medieval portrait of Saint Cecilia playing the portative...
This was one of the most beautiful and moving things I have ever heard in my life
What a beautiful performance, such brilliant artistry, thank You Catalina!
She plays much as a fiddler or harper might play, really flowing with the music. Well done.
Watching you play is a beautiful experience. If I were deaf you’d have my full attention.
One of the classic troubadour instruments. There is a replica displayed at Musee du Quercorb in Puivert, France.
It would be a fun one to try and recreate. Not for the faint of heart.
Making a note to stop there for an afternoon. Thanks!
The breath dynamics make all the difference. It makes it so much more organic and expressive than a pipe organ. I love the little thump when the air valve closes, too. It's almost percussion.
It IS a pipe organ, just a small one.
And there is no "breath" here... the dynamics are only slighly controlled by the bellows. As in all PIPE ORGANs, the pipe is either on or off. The "percussion" you hear is not a valve, but rather a deliberate feature of the pipe's mouth. It is called "chiff"
Like a bagpipe, it has drone pipe(s). The Irish bagpipe has a bellows like this, not a mouthpiece.
@@johnigoe1705 Listen more carefully with better speakers or headphones. She dynamically goes from soft to loud for emphasis, which you can't do on a pipe organ at all, because the air box is supplied at a constant pressure. The little thump I'm referring to is the air valve closing when she puts pressure on the bellows, not the "chuff" at the start of each note. Again, you need good speakers to hear it. A cell phone is worthless.
@@sneadh1 Like the banjo drone string
I've seen this instrument before, being played by angels in renaissance
era paintings. But I always assumed it was a fake joke instrument thought
up by imaginative painters.
Angels are portrayed playing all kinds of instruments, all of which I knew of and are very real. The little organetto was always a mystery as they went extinct and disappeared suddenly and not to be seen until early music revival in the 1960s. Today a dutch maker will make you one for 4-10K. These are complex instruments and require great skill & time to build. I know first hand as I have built several pipe organs myself.
This values 4-10k, are in Euro or in Dolar?
Why fake? Positive organs are the most ancient instruments around after percussions: we can trace them back to 200+ b.c.
@@gabrieldefreitascoelhocarr9556 -Euros, as they are made in Europe.
@@fnersch3367 so in my country currency it would cost about 40k without taxes
I hope she uploads more medieval music on this portative organ, I love it.
996TwinTurbo911 I will very soon!
A song played perfectly can never compare to a song played with full emotion and devotion. While the former can please your ears, the latter can touch your very soul.
What a pleasure of the soul to hear this organ.. I love it
A band that used it both in studio and live shows was Jethro Tull.
And wow, they really knew how to use it!!!
Also Shirley Collins, Dolly Collins - Barbara Allen from True Loves Knot
Yo man let’s bring this instrument back into modern life. Such a cool instrument!
That's the kind of music I want to hear in a fantasy game!
Listen to final fantasy crystal chronicles OST music. They use this instrument and many more other medieval instruments
I've listen to this dozens of times and each time it takes me somewhere and I can't explain it. Crazy
How amazingly cool is this?? Just stunning! And I love the joy with which she’s playing. 💕
I've never seen one, but very cool indeed. Wonderfully played.
Interesting that she can set a drone in the tonic sounding almost like a reedless harmonium.
She did that with a capo that held down the D.
Incredible performance and sound. I’ve never heard anything quite like this as an acoustic instrument. Imagine a collaborative performance or recording with Sarah Davachi.
I love unusual musical instruments. ❤
Check this out. czcams.com/video/3HP4gjJm4uQ/video.html Taken at the Musical Instrument Museum in Arizona.
I've never seen this instrument before, amazing! great performance too!
It's your enthusiasm as well as the " chiffy-ness" of this organ that gets me.
Thanks, Ms Vicens, for sharing this interesting en beautiful instrument, as well as the music. Much appreciated!
Thank you for introducing us to a new instrument and how amazing it sounds.
What an interesting sound, I really enjoyed your performance! Thank you
Grazie per un'attimo sono tornato indietro di secoli...
I could listen to you play all day
I watched Catalina in Funchal (Madeira, Portugal). Amazing experience
The sound feels like it transports you directly back in time.
Wonderful!
What a fascinating video. The drone note adds elements of bagpipes.
Immaculate performance. Its amazing what this music does when I close my eyes. Thank you!
Surprisingly expressive instrument, in her masterful hands.
Thanks for sharing this kind of beautiful music with us.
I have always loved drone instruments/music, and have listened to many types of drone instruments, but I have never heard this one before.
It has a very special sound. Nice reverb in that room too.
Such a wonderful musician. And what a beautiful tone out of that instrument.
Super Cati ! Enfin de la belle musique actuelle pour Organetto médioévale jouée avec fougue et sensibilité ! You are THE woman Catalina !

Fascinating instrument! Never saw or heard one before. I'm into massive Gothic cathedral pipe organs, but this is really cool!
Thank you so much Catalina, I listened to all your videos, a very nice collection, I am so lucky that I can hear, and that my ears are open to all kinds of music. I love watching and listening to you play, very talented indeed, I also love how you and the instrument are at one with one another, the instrument loves to be adored by you, new subscriber, take care x
The composition by Carson Cooman, “Rondeau” *from* “Tres Novas Cantigas” *(2014),* is extraordinarily evocative and beautiful, and obviously superbly well played by Catalina Vicens. Really transporting music.
😎🎹
Wow! A very beautiful lady playing a wonderful instrument, giving us medieval melodies. So nice!
Wonderful!! SO talented!!
Seduced! - by both the music and the performance!
What a beautiful instrument. Thanx for sharing
Schön, in einer Zeit zu leben, wo man sowas sehen und hören kann. Wirklich inspirierend! Auch das Album dazu ist magisch.
I love music with drone bass. Hits me different somehow.
Beautiful performance, thank you!
I have never heard of this instrument before. But I like it. And she does a great job. Very enjoyable.
Qué hermosa música y que hermosa mujer, además de un gran sentimiento. Felicidades!.
Gracias por compartir tu talento, saludos desde la Ciudad de México.
I can't listen to this beautiful piece once. I end up listening to this over and over at least ten times. So much happens. It never sounds the same. This peace is so beautiful! I close my eyes and it's like I am transported to another world. Sometimes I can't help it but weep at the beauty I am hearing.
Manuel Driggs thank you so much!
Wow, my favorite instrument is the king of instruments, but I never knew it came in a portable version. Thanks for posting!
Your performance is just stunning, I am very glad I discovered your channel and subscribed. Thank you a lot!
Bravi for the performer and the composer! Perfect performance. Perfect understanding of this instrument's capacities and sensitive touch. Interesting and charming composed piece Thanks for uploading.
I totally adore you…..i wish you all the best from Italy…..take care and keep playing..❤️
I really enjoyed your tunes. I can imagine being there!
Wow, it's so awesome! Outstanding performance - I am jealous of your superb talent and skill. Thank you for sharing this marvelous thing and song.
Wow. So beautiful. Studied about this organ, but not sure I've ever heard. Thanks for posting!
Magnífico , que arte tan hermoso ,.la Música Medieval es misteriosa hermosa , me encanta ♥️
Definitely the most intriguing instrument I've ever seen. Glad this video was recommended.
How wonderful to see a portable organ for real rather than in a mediaeval picture and the sound is much lovelier than I expected. Thank you so much for posting!
Beautiful to listen to and watch
This has everything I can want from an instrument and musician! To think I've missed out on this for 2 years is a sweet agony but then again I only recently heard the incredible group Mala Punica just recently. I think they might use this in combination with equally divine voices and other probably rarely seen or mastered Medieval instruments. I'm in instant devotee of Catalina's and will be purchasing as much of her music as possible in furtherance of music and in repayment for her/their great generosity here on youtube.
Your grasp of written English is spectacular for a two yr old. Oxford grad by age five?
Tioga Fretworks haha! Jealous? 😜
:-)
Often saw them in paintings never heard one,
Thank you!
Amen! to all the compliments contained herein and to the lovely little tremolo effect in the slower section.
Genial!!! Magnífica interprestación Catalina.
On the really old organs, there used to be two men in the back of the organ taking turns stepping on an air mechanism that send air through the organ. They had to time themselves perfectly to make sure there was airflow that never stopped.
Vic Wat bellows, are what they’re called

Brillante, lo mejor que hoy ví.
Very special instrument! Great performance!

This has just made my day and it's been a damn long one!
