How Phineas And Ferb Did The "Impossible"
Vložit

- Everyone told the creators of Phineas and Ferb that the show they wanted to make was impossible. Yet, the best Phineas and Ferb episodes prove that what was supposed to be impossible, is really just a rethinking of how animated shows are written. Whether its Perry and Doofenshmirtz or a song, its hard to forget this show once you've seen it. Phineas and Ferb was Disney taking a risk, and its one that absolutely paid off.

beautiful.
One of the things I love about Phinneas and Ferb is that somebody's embarrassment never became the thing to laugh at. Even when Candace was sometimes put in an embarrassing situation, she still wasn't humiliated. I hate watching shows that make someone being the butt of the joke an important part of the comedy. Not only does it feel a bit gross, but my secondhand embarrassment is too strong.

My fav episode when Planty the Potted Plant defeated doof and got himself job in OWCA
The Organisation Without a Cool Acronym
Don’t forget the time when a completely normal platypus accidentally switched places with Agent P and was licking Coffee off the ground and Doofensmirtz immediately assumed it was an intimidation tactic
It was so sad when Planty’s cover was blown and had to resign. 😢
Phineas and Ferb had very repetitive episodes and each one still managed to entertain me. Now that's the impossible.

Meep ! 🐿 in my pants
Literally
“Kids are smarter than shows give them credit for” I’m glad some creators realize that
Thats why so many kids shows of today (or episodes from our old glorious shows like the Yellow Sponge) are dull and not worth watching, because most writers dont think that many kids arent actually dumb but enjoy more "complicated" and sophisticated stuff and to make the episodes also enjoyable for older audiences. Because thats how you create great franchises. Catering to both young and old. I always loved P&F and I can remember many things just as I remember the older Spongebob episodes or songs.
If I ever get kids. I will show them P&F, Old Spongebob/Simpsons. Because I for sure know that they will enjoy it, maybe not to the extend I love it. But nonetheless :)
It's like this in the Game Dev scene too, it's always a fight between us devs and the higher ups who don't think kids are capable of doing challenging things. Kid's are out there playing Fortnight and Minecraft, let us make the game fun.
IKR
I was was dumb little shit tho, but most kids aren't.
Apparently "some" is two lol
And we all can agree that they created one of the best characters ever. I’m of course referring to Dr. D.
Phineas and Ferb feels like it gets kids. It didn’t try and pretend they were made of glass.
The smartest thing that the show did was also quitting while ahead and actually successfully wrapping up most of the character arcs.
I know it’s true, but I would kill for just one more season.
true like one can only imagine the shit show it could have fallen to if they forced it to continue to this day
Come to think of it, that's just what Calvin and Hobbes did right too (although there weren't that many arcs that it could really wrap up). Actually, there are a lot of similarities between Calvin n Hobbes and Phineas and Ferb. Both written for adults but widely enjoyed by kids. Both have an iconic comedic duo. Both have characters that never grow older or change.

"Feels like this summer has been going on for like, 3 Years." -Dr.Doof, Season 3
@@PhantomTissue”Has it only been three months? Because I’ve been counting, and we’re WAY over 150”
- Buford
I actually never noticed that there weren't really conflicts or character developments in that show.
Well there's at least one thing happening over the course of time: Jeremy and Candace getting together in a relationship.
Buford has a massive character development? From biggest bully in town to beloved friend with some of the best one-liners. Baljeet and Buford’s relationship is major development. The amount Ferb talks. Candace and Jeremy. Stacy getting a main character role. The fireside girls getting main character roles. People eventually finding out that Perry the platypus is an agent (even if they forget). The boys getting “busted.” And that’s not even the half of it. SOOO much character development it’s unreal. All while maintaining the formula in each episode!
Doofenshmirtz and Vanessa's relationship evolves.
I think the one that evolves the most is Doof and Vanessa's relationship aswell as Perry and Doof
There are character developments, but it’s extremely subtle.

Or when he had to wear pretty dresses for an entire year? Or when he spent a years worth of savings (3 cents) on a teddy bear for his mother only for her to give it to Roger? The most under appreciated fact is that the songs are genuinely good, even without the context from the show. And they made songs for multiple genres.
how are they under appreciated? everyone who has seen the show knows the songs be jamming lol. You just wanted to be over dramatic didn't you.
Cousin Patsey and the translations. Principals in French and Spanish. I grew up singing them
And all (or most) were Dan and Swampy saying, "Can it be something like this?" and Danny from Bowling for Soup leaning back in his chair and staring up at the ceiling, "Huh... yeah... yeah, I think I could do that."
And I gotta admit, I LIKED Bowling for Soup back in the day, but I never held them to a very high musical standard. The stuff he accomplished on this show was in a whole different league.

One of my favorite lines from Phineas and Ferb:
"Well, I think we have all learned a valuable lesson today....But we all know what it is, so why waste time repeating it?"
An obvious jab at how a lot of kids shows talk down to their target audience. Like Dan Povenmire said: Kids are smarter than people give them credit for.
There are a lot of culture reference in phineas and ferb that are just great. The show is like family guy for kid. During episode "summer belong to you" phineas introduce his amazing sun beater 3000 and Buford was like "it a name follow a big number" making fun of standard kid trope of cool vehicular device with a big number.
@@thinhvo3893 It's almost always "3000" isn't it? Didn't the naming convention come from various devices being named with the year they were made?
Lauren Brown OMG I forgot about that quote! I loved that XD. I HATE when kids shows have that thing where in the last scene of the episode, the characters have a whole conversation where they spell out the lesson they learned word for word, then they all shout “YEAH!!!!”, everybody laughs and the episode ends. Oh and then there are the kids shows who instead of doing this they take it one step further and end the episode by SINGING about the lesson.
P and F actually DID end one episode with an “I guess we all learned a valuable lesson today” conversation (when they’d spent the day looking for Perry in Africa and then back at the camp after they found him they were wondering how he got to Africa in the first place), but they were just parodying it and I remember it made Candace super pissed😂😂
@@DraconicDuelist Yeah but lately kid show just throw random big number that mean nothing.

Fun Fact : This show was the pitched for 16 years. From Fox Kids to Cartoon Network to Nickelodeon, all of them rejected it. Disney was the final channel for the creators to pitch, at first Disney rejected the concept but they ask the creators for them to keep the portofolio of the drawings and that was the last hope that the creator have in pitching the show meaning that if Disney rejected it, that's literally the end of it. Lmao not true, a human will never fly without the assistance of technology. It's impossible.
@@JakesDailyShorts Actually, you may be wrong on this. It would be immoral to do so in most scenarios but gen modification can potentially happen. Though, I guess you could make the argument that after these modifications they aren't human but used to be human before such a modification.

“phineas and ferb tells us to be happy”
*remembers all dr doofenshmirtz’s sad backstory*
It all began in the day of my birth, both of my parents failed to show up
He was forced to be a lawn gnome, raised by ocelots for a period of time, had to wear dresses for an entire year and was mocked for that, tried to show his mother love but his mum just hated him and preferred Roger because he sucks at kickball, he was lied by his parents and sent to America, got divorced, damn he had a bad life
"Dude, I was raised by ocelots! Literally! Disowned by my parents and raised by Central American wildcats. I had to work as a _lawn gnome._ I had to wear hand-me-up girls' clothing. _Neither of my parents showed up for my birth!_
No emotional stakes my a**.
It's so sad that it's already funny
man , lets cry for him together
Mooommm! Phineas and Ferb made a show that harbored millions of fans and produced catchy songs.
I remember when I was really getting back into the show when I was really young. I would sit down and watch a few episodes, and there was something there that I never really could describe. Keep in mind, I was at the age where I had no real concept and love for well crafted shows and movies as I do now, we all were relatively like that when we were that age. But somehow, there was just something there that kept me watching and jokes and humour that made me enjoy every second of it. This aspect of the show has always stuck with me, even today. And since Covid recommends us to stay indoors, imma binge watch the heck out of this show.
“Ain’t got rhythm” was one of my favorite songs as a child and it’s still a killer song
Justin K watch ain’t got rhythm but he actually dosent have rhythm
You have every right to love that song. It even won an Emmy Award!
Gitchee gitchee goo
Busted and Squirrels in my pants also had no business being as good as they are.
Busted is a fan favorite
baljeet taking off his wig and saying “call me baldjeet” is funny EVERY time
I reference that all the time
I literally laughed out loud reading that😂😂 oh the memories
I had watched the show for years and I have never seen this.
Sadly in my country the joke was just "llamame calvo jeet" one of the best jokes ended up as a really trashy non sense
In German they even managed to still do this joke (Baljeet becomes „Kahljeet“ (kahl= old german word for hairless) ) . I dont know if its bc i grew up with it, but in my opinion the german translation is even better than the original.
When I was depressed, I’d watch this show for hours and hours. I didn’t watch any other show cause they all felt boring. But Phineas and Ferb was still as funny as it was 10 years ago when me and my friends watched every episode.
Okay but the SONGS. Summer belongs to you. What might have been. Gitchee gitchee goo. Busted. Platypus controlling me. Ain't got rythm. Need i go on ? Every single song was such a bop. Sometimes i'll find myself humming a song from the show, and i'll be like wait, what ? Amazing.
One Good Scare is my favorite!
People disproving of the pitch: "What reason do we have to sympathize with Doofenshmirtz? Could you tell some of his backstory?"

The elevated writing, also makes the show timeless. Where kids who grew up with it can rewatch it catching all of the incredibly funny visual gags they weren’t looking for or the jokes they couldn’t understand.
Elevated writing helps a lot when it comes to the longevity of these shows. A lot of cartoons and TV shows want to focus strictly on the kids, but the great shows focus on both the kids AND the parents. You want to create a writing style whimsical enough for the kids, but also sophisticated enough to be appreciated by adults, ensuring that the kids who grew up watching the show, will still cherish the show when watching it with their kids. Shows like Phineas and Ferb, SpongeBob (older SpongeBob, not newer SpongeBob), Chowder, Regular Show, and Last Airbender are shows that are still great when kids get older because the target demographic is not too hyperfocused.
Does this always work? No, as a lot of shows should focus on either just kids or just adults. But if you want your show to be remembered fondly through nostalgia, and equally cherished through reruns while older, then "elevated" writing is a good approach.
@@howardbaxter2514 : Another place where this elevated writing worked is the old Warner Brothers and MGM cartoons from the 40's and 50's. Watch the old Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Tom and Jerry, and Droopy Dog cartoons, as well as others of that era that were "one shots". (ex. "Red Hot Riding Hood") The jokes and gags were often for both adults and kids since they were usually shown before movies.
@@howardbaxter2514 I also gotta put The Clone Wars on that list. Even when the episodes were dealing with shit like corruption, filibusters, and the military-industrial complex it was still entertaining as fuck.
@@marksebree5218 can't forget about Animaniacs.
Strong agree
the bg music at 8:45 and his style of narration reminds me of mark rober
This video perfectly explains why me and my brother loved watching this when we were kids (and we still love watching it to this day) and why my dad loved to sit down and watch it with us, it's an amazing show and you portrayed it perfectly
Should be renamed to
*how phineas does the impossible: putting his shirt on*
He turns it inside out, steps into the bottom of it, pulls it up to his neck, and then flips it back the right way while pulling it down.
he actually did it in first minutes of In the 2nd Dimension movie
and gets the stripes painted on by perry
Always thought how he put on his shirt😂😂
His face bends. It's fabric of nightmares
Phineas and Ferb is a masterpiece, I'm glad you were able to explain that clearly
Wow, you made me tear up a little right there at the end. When I started watching PnF I wasn't in a good place emotionally, It was really refreshing to watch happy kids being inventive and the positivity and carpe diem attitude of the show really saved me back then, not only that, It motivated me to become a script writer and don't give up even if it takes me 16 years to get my projects out there too. Great video.
Everything in one episode:
"Hey Ferb, I know what we're going to do today"
"Hey, where's Perry?"
Cuts to Perry going to his secret lair
dooby dooby doobah dooby dooby doobah
"Good morning, Agent P. Stop Doofenshmirtz."
DOOFENSHMIRTZ EVIL INCORPORATEEEEEED
"Ah! Perry the Platypus."
Doof traps Perry
"Behold! The _____inator!"
He possibly says something like a tragic backstory or a reason why he built what he built
Perry rolls his eyes
Cut to Phineas and Ferb making their big invention, Isabella saying "whatcha doin," Buford and Baljeet also joining in, Phineas and Ferb completing their invention, and Candace trying to get Mom's attention
Maybe some "aren't you a little young to be ______?" "Yes, yes I am."
Cut back to Doof and Perry
Perry escapes while Doof is just rambling about nothing
Then they fight and probably bump into the inator which usually goes into rapid fire after they do
Inator explodes, probably
CURSE YOU, PERRY THE PLATYPUUUUUSSS!!
A zap from the inator destroys Phineas and Ferb's invention thus getting rid of the evidence
Candace finally shows Mom and it's gone
Candace says something like, "but, but, but, but"
"Oh there you are, Perry!"
"Anyone want some pie?
"Yes, yes we do."
Ferb says something
THE END
And a song somewhere in there
Let me know if I missed anything.

Candace says but, but, but, but but but...
The only impossible thing is how Phineas put on his shirt
He doesn’t put it on he was born with it over time it has fused with his skin
Fabric and flesh combined...
Theres a really tiny hidden zipper somewhere on there
secret zippers
If I remember correctly the top of his shirt stretches .
Probably the same way Arnold does.
This show made me realize that this is not like other cartoons. It can still be relevant even when you get a little older. Other cartoons, when you re-watch them, you can see the difference in how you see them before and now. The magic and idea that the cartoon is great gradually disappear, and that it is not how you remember it. But this... it brings you joy and childhood, the nostalgia you get from just a cartoon.
BRILLIANT retrospective!!! I love watching Phineas and Ferb with my kids. You’re spot on that it was made for adults as much as it is for the kids. Thanks for making this.
That library song is musically superior to most of the songs that are created today

My question as a kid was always “where did they get their materials” lol
When I was watching this show growing up I never noticed that they created a new song for each episode. That’s crazy!
