      "In 2005, a majority of Brazil's population voted against banning the sale of guns and ammunition to civilians in a referendum.[1] Executive Order No. 5.123, of 1 July 2004[9] allowed the Federal Police to confiscate firearms which are not possessed for a valid reason; self-defense was not considered a valid argument.[10]
      These measures saw mixed results. Initially, the crime rate dropped,[11] but subsequently rose in later years. 2012 marked the highest rate of gun deaths in 35 years for Brazil, eight years after a ban on carrying handguns in public went into effect,[12] and 2016 saw the worst ever death toll from homicide in Brazil, with 61,619 dead.[13] The death toll rose again in 2017 to 63,880, a 3.7% rise from 2016.[14] After the flexibility of guns in 2019 by President Jair Bolsonaro, the number of deaths registered by homicide was 19% lower compared to 2018 (51,558), while in 2019 the registered number was 41,635 being the lowest number of homicide deaths since 2007.[15]"

      @peterclarke7240 Před 3 lety

      @Gary Winthorp Listen, I'm not advocating for gun laws in the US, I'm simply saying this is a self-perpetuating issue caused by the fact that, once you allow relatively lax gun laws to exist (coupled with frankly disgraceful levels of institutionally-imposed poverty), then the concept of gun ownership becomes a no-brainer, but once it does, it becomes a no-brainer for criminals to carry guns. It's an arms race, but on a civilian level. As such it is still relevant to ask: "historically, why did we allow this mess to happen in the first place?"
      Just so you know, I'm a fan of guns in general. I enjoy their history and the engineering behind them, I enjoy shooting them, and I certainly don't agree with banning them, but I just don't live in a country where owning a gun for self-defense is a necessity. However, I used to live in the states, and, as a historian, it really made me wonder how things got so bad over there that gun-ownership became equated with "freedom" because no other country feels the need to do that.
      Me, I like the feeling of freedom I get from NOT having to own a gun.

    • @peterclarke7240
      @peterclarke7240 Před 3 lety

      @Gary Winthorp Having lived in the US for a number of years, I can say this: you don't know what freedom of speech is.
      Certain types of Americans blether on and on about their freedoms, but what are those freedoms?
      You don't have a media system that is state-funded and as such is devoid of advertising and is therefore free to be objective.
      The freedom to die because you can't grasp the concept of universal healthcare?
      Your freedom to a media that isn't controlled by the global press like the Murdoch machine? (I mean, really! the amount of libertarians who still support Murdoch Media is embarrassing- don' t you understand how they control you?!).
      Your freedom to send your kids to a decent school that doesn't cost the earth because there's no state support for decent education?
      Freedom of speech, sunshine, is the ability to say what you want, but equally it's the ability to think for yourself without your revolting overlords tricking you into supporting their revolting plans that only benefit them.

    The Second Amendment explicitly states "A *well regulated Militia* , being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." And yet, people argue that an amendment that explicitly states that it has to do with the regulated arming of citizens means that the possession, carrying, etc. of weapons cannot be regulated. The amendment was meant to avoid the issues of a professional army, and its potential for abuse and totalitarianism, by having a trained citizenry that could be called to action to defend the country (and conversely could say "get stuffed" if they didn't want to go shoot at whoever they were being told to go shoot at).
    Of course, in the age of nuclear weapons, billion dollar stealth bombers, and AWACS systems, a lightly trained corps of marksmen isn't going to work for national defense, but we also don't see soldiers quartered in private homes all that much, either. Some of the amendments haven't aged as well as others, and it's understandably the ones that address the symptom (professional armies, armed government agents bullying homeowners (2nd, 3rd)) instead of the disease (censorship, fanaticism, government arrogation of authority (1st, 1st again, 9th and 10th)).

      Helena Purle When they did gun confiscation in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina some National Guard regiments REFUSED to enforce the order because it was unconstitutional. That was just with a national disaster. What do you think would happen in a tyranny/revolution situation?
      Probably what happened in the last revolution situation. That is to say people went back to their home states and fought there. Now take a guess at what the home states have. Think about it... take your time....
      Every state has national guard regiments and most states have military bases. The last time around the military men decided to fight for their respective states. If that were to happen again that would mean the states fighting tyranny would have drones, takes, war planes etc...
      Anyhow, tyranny is not just Federal but all tyranny including state and organized crime. In the battle of Athens civilians took arms from the National Guard (which is made up of civilians) and stormed the local police department. This happened around the 1950s and the Federal government did not intervene.

Canada and Western Europe are most similar to the US in all relevant respects (laws, strength of public institutions, culture, religion). And lots of mass shootings happen in the US and not in any of the other comparable countries, you can do the math (I should say: "If you weren't American, you could do the math").

    I think ways to help reduce gun crime includes:-
    1) Make legislation involving the sale/possession of guns the same in every state
    2) Minimum age of 21 to own/purchase a gun
    3) Must have proof of completing a licensed firearms awareness course for a particular type of firearm before they can buy a firearm of that type
    4) All vendors whether it is a store, a private seller, or a gun show, has to do background checks on the individual they are selling to which must be passed, and they must be able to prove the background check took place before the individual took possession of the gun.

      Read the Tenth Amendment to the US Constitution. Then read the Second Amendment. One expressly prohibits the infringement by the national government upon the pre-existing and already recognised right to keep and bear arms. The other expressly prohibits the national government from from inserting its authority into any matter not specificly assigned by the Constitution for it to have authority. Gun regulation, just like abortion, was meant to be none of the national government's business. States could govern on those issues or not in accordance with their choice.

But surely there is room for compromise and some sort of at least limited control. Other countries have high rates of gun-ownership but no where near the same numbers of gun crime. I do hope something does happen as I have some very dear friends in the US who I don't want to see hurt or killed.

You have over 11,000 gun related homicides a year and they have something like 160. Yet in Canada you can buy AR-15’s, Tavor tar 21’s (IDW), L98A2’s, L1A1 SLR’s, sig sauer P226’s, m9 berretta’s, colt 1911’s, .45 tacticals, .50 desert eagle’s...well actually you can buy pretty much any rifle or pistol that you want, provided it meets some reasonable requirements. I’ve shot in canada and the gun culture is amazing. America’s is just dangerous and irresponsible.

      +Niall Brady Being able to protect your life and the lives of others against a gunman, a rapist, a kidnapper, what have you, with a gun, IS FREEDOM and SELF-SUFFICIENCY. The shootings of innocents, which you mentioned, occur overwhelmingly in GUN-FREE ZONES. I do not live in fear. I sleep soundly, and walk and drive in public soundly and peacefully; speak softly and carry a big stick. Pacifists and other anti-gunners live in denial of reality; ignorance is truly bliss. So, to that end, I'd rather be aware and vigilant (not fearful) and able to protect and survive, than think everything is rosy-colored, cowardly handing over the responsibility to protect myself and my own to authorities. (BTW, police have NO obligation to protect you [see case law].) The bottom line is that this is a natural right; it may not and will not be infringed in OUR country: Our RKBA isn't going anywhere. Period.

    • @niallbrady8198
      @niallbrady8198 Před 8 lety

      champy1210, I get that there are cases for carrying handguns as you pointed out above and in situations where the law can't get to you quickly. But whilst that gives you your self sufficiency, it's delusional to say that gives you freedom. Clearly you guys have a different perception to that of other 1st world nations. I've said elsewhere that the US is so far down the 'gun road' it's almost pointless expecting a radical change. It just ain't gonna happen. So maybe it's best you carry on as best you can, accepting that the only real winner here are the arms manufacturers. Is it true that there are over 300million firearms owned legally in the US? My thinking is that the criminal comes to burgle, murder etc. so you rightfully buy a firearm to defend yourself and family. Next time around, he brings some friends, also armed, so you buy extra guns too. You get where this is going, right? Either way, there's a genuine reason you'll carry a firearm but to think you can react quicker than a trained pro, worse still a terrorist is ridiculous. Unless of course, you served in your armed forces. People carry guns out of fear and that's a fact. A guy weighing 220lbs is soon turned away if you're carrying, right? But let's say your 3 year old daughter finds her mommys pistol in her purse and accidently shoots either herself or mommy. Or the guy who decides he's angry with the world so murders his whole family and/or neighbors. Or the guy who just senselessly decides to walk into a school and murders children and teachers indiscriminately, or the students on university campuses seen as easy meat by a madman. Before you say the victims should/could of armed themselves, they shouldn't have to in a free society. And it nothing to do with ignorance. Australia had a mass shooting and the government bought back almost all the guns, the Brits did the same after the same after the Dunblane massacre in the mid 1990s. Most of Europe has banned guns and all these societies are in my view more free and secure than the US. They say that any thief carrying a weapon is essentially a coward, knowing that the sight of the firearm is enough in most cases to get the victim to turn over jewellery etc. the US is unique in 1st world economies in being 'sold' well and truly on conspiracy theories and thus the 'need' for protection. Think on this, your property catches fire. Do you expect the fire service to arrive and put it out or do you rely on your own resources? I'll close by saying I served in HM Forces during the Falklands War, was injured but I'm glad to say that what mentally impaired people we have, cannot buy guns. No one calls me cowardly and our 'rose tinted' outlook has been borne out of world wars, wars on terror, the IRA, ISIS and hundreds of years of development as a society. One day, when enough people have died, US society will call a halt. If you can campaign against your troops dying in Iraq and Afghanistan and get the troops home, you can end the mindless violence on home ground.

    • @champy1210
      @champy1210 Před 8 lety

      +Niall Brady, yes, the self-defense aspect is clear to both of us. However, it most definitely is not delusional-it is rather historically and currently accurate-to state that exercising the RKBA guarantees, protects freedom. The reasons the Framers rightfully included the RKBA were chiefly of two: 1) to guard against tyrannical government, foreign and domestic; and 2) to provide for common defense (daily defense against criminals). People are deluded into thinking that in the nascent 21st century, that tyranny wouldn't occur in a first-world country; that is patently false. It happened several times all over the world by dictators that slaughtered almost 300 million people-many of them their own. This is not a kookish conspiratorial claim; it is fact, historical record. And history repeats itself. Three to four percent of the population are psychopaths: Most are found in politics, followed by CEOs. To presume that it will or even could not ever happen-or even is already happening-is

Since those laws were put in place, there have been ZERO mass shootings, as well as their suicide rate has decreased. The only thing in the U.S. constitution that relates to women is the 19th Amendment which gives women the right to vote. The ERA was proposed in 1923. It was passed in the 70’s, but needed to be ratified by 3/4 of the states AND it was given a deadline, which is rare for amendments. So fast forward to 2019, there is nothing in the Constitution to protect the rights of women.

Do you really think that in a time of absolute terror the average person will not only be able to pull the trigger but also accurately hit their target and only their target? Ha, no. Most likely scenario? You dont even get a shot off or you miss. If you miss you endanger more lives. And now the criminal has an oppurtunity to take your gun. They're calmer than you, less afraid and more determined so that wouldn't be tricky. Not to mention they picked to attack you so they are confident they can take you on. You make an awful situation worse by introducing a gun every single time without fail.
