- The WDR BIG BAND feat. the two Chick Corea pieces "Spain / La Fiesta" on bass John Goldsby, on trombone Andy Hunter, on piano Billy Test as well as Johan Hörlén on alto saxophone, Karolina Strassmayer on flute and Ruud Breuls on trumpet. Conducting in the concert is former principal conductor Michael Abene, who also wrote the arrangements. Recorded on October 9, 2021 at the WDR Funkhaus / Cologne.
On February 09, 2021, the keyboardist and composer Chick Corea passed away. With him, the jazz world has lost one of the greats. Born in Massachusetts, Corea began his career in the 1960s. He gained great attention when he contributed to the groundbreaking Miles Davis album "Bitches Brew." In the 1970s, Corea enjoyed great commercial success with his fusion band "Return To Forever." Repeatedly switching between acoustic and electric lineups, Corea played almost exclusively his own compositions, many of which have since become standards. In honor of this great musician, the WDR Big Band, under the direction of Michael Abene, has conceived a program of Corea's works that primarily reflects the keyboardist's acoustic side.

It is very important to note and not to forget that the main melodies and theme of this piece are from The Aranjues Concherto for Guitar by Joaquin Rodrigo from Spain.
The brilliant arrangement by genius Corea made the theme even more popular.

It looks like a Würlitzer electric piano and sound sometime between a Fender Rhodes & and a piano würlitzer!
But it sounds great!!!

I remember Mr. Chick Corea's live performance at a steel folding chair about 5 meters distance from him and the Piano. It was a miracle special real experience.

What a unique and arrangement which gives the needed room for the soloist to make their best. I've always liked Andy Hunters style especially in latin style. WDR really can suprise with its own style and versatility.

Boy!!!!!! this is a fiendishly difficult arrangement and a lot could go wrong - nothing did. Loved the use of piccolo, flute, soprano sax, euphoniums and Eb Bass. What a brilliant group of truly professional musicians.

It begins with the Adagio of the Concierto de Aranjuez, by Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo, in contrabass and flute. Beautiful.
Yes, that is his all the way up to 2:30 and I’m always a little disappointed when credit is not given. Written for classical guitar and orchestra by Rodrigo back in 1939. Chick was born in 1941. Also used on Sketches of Spain from Miles Davis and Gil Evans in 1960 without the knowledge or permission of the original composer. Señor Rodrigo died in 1999 at the age of 97. This melody was his most well known work.

'Corea has made no secret for his love of Spanish, Latin and flamenco music. In 1972 he debuted perhaps his most well-known composition, “Spain,” inspired by Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez. The piece has been recorded countless times since, including versions by de Lucía and Tito Puente.'
