I have followed the progress of Rita and her contemporaries with great interest throughout their time with Joan Chamorro in Barcelona. It has always been obvious that Rita had so much promise and here she shows the proof, ably supported by the cream of the big band world!
👍
Wow Rita has really excelled with her improvisation and playing in the high registers! Reminds me of Marshall Gilkes, another amazing trombonist. 👏👏👏👍
Rita & WDR. A Good discovering. Pure velvet.
👍🎶🚀
Joan must be bursting with pride. Rita was always destined for greatness and it’s so satisfying to see her realising her dreams and playing with this stellar band! 🇦🇺
Fabulous concert!
Marvelous Rita Payes and great WDR Big Band, thank you. Love your Jazz Club concerts.
Thanx, Galina!
@@WDRBIGBAND My pleasure.
I’m a big fan of the talented Rita Payes and Ms. Elizabeth [mother of Rita]. I’ve followed them for years. I enjoy their fabulous musical 🎶 collaboration. Danke schön.
👍🎶👍
What a super talent.she is wonderfull!!! To hear the big band sound with our youth is great. Such poetic words in spanish what a sound.
It doesn't get any better than this. Rita, the playing, the photography, fantastic.
Thank you very much!
What a way to start a concert! I've listened to "Quién Lo Diría" perhaps 1,000 times since it popped up on my YT feed. Hearing the song on the album "Como La Piel," it did NOT even register with me. I had no idea what to make of it - there just wasn't enough orchestration for me to make much sense of it. But with the arrangement Ansgar wrote for this piece, within ONE measure of the orchestra playing I thought to myself, "Holly sh!t, this is the theme song to a soundtrack for a major motion picture! The song is just staggeringly beautiful and the arrangement is stellar. God, I wish I had been in the room!
I would also like to be there... Maybe one day!

Também gostaria de estar lá... Quem sabe um dia!

I'm retired, but now I can't get enough of applauding the new generation of talent, and the combination of this youth with the "Competence" of the WDR Big Band...
With special thanks to my instrument, always well represented by Billy Test!
* Congratulations to Rita Payés and her brother for mentioning one of my idols, Thelonious Monk *

It's great that the entire concert is together with a playlist!
👍🚀
You know when it's really good when it opens then it gets really really good . An inspirational gig bravo what a singer and trombonist with the greatest band
Thank you for your kind words!
Felicidades y a Elisabeth Roma igual.
Y la big band of course!
👍
Not sure why someone would say this doesn’t work. She’s fabulous! A gas

Bellissimo concerto. Fantastica Rita❤
Mille gracie!
Erstklassiges Konzert!

Rita Payes sings, Rita Payes plays, Rita composes, Rita has fun... Great!!! She doesn't feel scared, not even of Miles Davis.
That is true! She is a thoroughbred musician with heart and soul and follows her emotions.
Wow really awesome can't compliment enough, really Great!
Thank you very much!

Wspaniały koncert i Rita, której talent podziwiam od lat. Dziękuję. An amazing concert and Rita, whose career I have been following since the beginning. Thanks.
Thank you for your kind words!
superb!!
Love this
So toll, danke vielmals.
Muchas gracias! ¡Todo lo mejor para México!
EXCELLENT! You are all great!!
Thank you very much! 😊

Muchas gracias!
Hard to know what to say. The band, the soloists, the stars all play with such high quality and the music gains a "sixth sense". The tension between classical guitar and big band voicing lifts both
Thank you for your kind words!
Amazing, Perfect!!!
Thank you!
Das freut uns zu hören! Danke fürs Zuschauen!
Superb!
Merci ! 🌟☀️💖🌟
halo!!! Rita amazing demasiado talento, 💜 Ich libe dicht 😍
😉🎶
just wow
This is truly great, but so far, I have not seen my favorite, Karolina Strassmayer (the lady with the famous Pink House)!! Thank you from Oregon 😊
Karolina has taken a sabbatical year and was therefore not involved in this production.
They keep the women low in numbers in all German Bigbands 😢. Nothing much has changed in this respect. Karolina is an exception and a great player, too❤
Que lindeZa !!!!1
👍
Grande Rita vai diritta al cuore! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
😊That is true! She is fantastic in what she is doing.
¡Mola!
Very smooth.
Magnifique sublime.🤫🤔🥲😘😇☝
Merci beaucoup!

👍🎶
Comfortable sound
👍
🍷🍷👍
Should non-jazz pieces like "Esta Montana de Enfrente" be played in a Big Band Jazz Concert?
Look at the faces on the jazz musicians behind Rita and Eli. This is a moment of growth for the WDR. They help innovators reach out new audiences but they also refresh their own palette and musical thinking.
😉
Rita Payés, one from Joan Chamorro's school www.youtube.com/@JoanChamorro
Great!
where is "el marabino"? you released it separately bit it doesn't seem to appear herr, in the full concert
Hi, it is the last tune in the concert. But you are right, it wasn't written in the list. We corrected it. Thanx for the hint!
uau....
Gibt es eine CD?
Ist in Planung...
any chance this is released as a cd?
There are no plans at the moment, sorry!
Is this a reupload?
No, we did not upload the whole concert yet, but the single tunes!
Suave
😊
They need to mic her better! we are missing some great stuff.
I have some issues with these youngsters. While Chamorro had been doing a great job since about 12 years ago, these young players lack the streets, and joints experience most top jazz musicians had. They all sound about the same... No feeling, very few things to tell. There are exceptions: Luigi Grasso, Drew Zaremba (from North Texas University), Luigi's brother Pasquale Grasso on guitar, and do on. However they do not find their own accent nor their own voice. This is evident particularly when you are invited to play/sing with one of the -- maybe -- best jazz orchestra in the planet. Andrea Motis is cute, she's playing trumpet and alto sax since she was about 11 years old. She has a tiny and childish tone when singing, but she's a polished product. Compare her with Alice Ricciardi or Roberta Garbarini and she's wiped out. Nuts and bolts are missing from all of them. They pass through the Chamorro school because they have to undertake a more solid job for a living, after high school. I met Makoto Ozone in the '80s, while attending BERKLEE in Boston. He was 18, and had already learned almost all Oscar Peterson's solos. It was clear he would become a jazz start on his native Japan and in the world. Long live JAZZ! 🎹🇪🇬
Let's hear your playing.
La música no es una competición. Si te gusta, fantástico, i si no te gusta, no hace falta que la escuches.
Wow that's harsh. If you know anything practical about singing, especially in Jazz, you know that every day can give you a slightly different "instrument" and even for an absolute giant like Sting it takes time to feel into a new band, duo or combo. There is nothing bad about that, as there are almost no big bands anymore, almost no singer gets the chance to adapt into a band. A great band is a huge precise machine and magnifying glass for everything you do on stage. It feels absolutely intimidating at first but when get to ride the dragon, only this is when "personality" adds itself in. Singing is not done by pressing the right buttons in the right order. No good music is but for singers we all think we are experts. Until we hit a stage.
Rita does a great job, especially when soloing (very few can do it like her) but who knows what she could grow into?
Every artist consciously uses maybe half of what is technically available but in order to do that confidently, you have to have experienced 110% of it, including everything you failed in. That takes time.
And bigbands are ruthless. You have to be in balance with their perfection.
This falls flat as legitimate criticism, especially of Rita Payes. But so many Jazz "old guards" dislike the further development and expansion of "their" music. Rita's first Jazz Club public performance (yes, with the voice of a 14 year old) singing Desafinado, had more rhythmic sophistication and better dynamic control than Ella Fitzgerald's versions, the which sound decidedly flat-footed afterwards. No feeling?! Even at 14, with Gloomy Sunday, 16 with I'm a Fool, Luiza, 18 with Blame it on my Youth, 20 with her Marti Serra Nina Simone Songbook with its devastating Strange Fruit she created instant dissatisfaction with the glorified lounge singers. Rita's rubato started early and grew precisely from mining the heft of emotional speech and eschewing the standard tricks of the usual chanteuse, but then overlaying a trombone sound and range that matched that of her own natural voice. This is an open-handed magic of music made by an emotionally engaged young woman.
Whilst not a key piece of jazz music, Dolores, by Ramon (Oleandole) Olivares, beautifully illustrates the differences in singing styles. Free of all the usual runs, slides and scoops ornamenting the trained jazz singer, Rita sticks with the immediacy of natural emotional speech whilst maintaining a rich musicality.
Yep, she was more than a little nervous here rather rushing her old stuff, but the breadth and range of her musical interests including classical, folk and fado will do more to connect jazz to the common herd (where it most belongs), than any refined lounge singer.
(Pace! Alice Ricciardi IS superb.)
@@fliprim Beautifully said.
I believe that Rita and her mother Elisabeth are not quite integrated in this sort of big band jazz. They have different traditions about jazz, Rita and Elisabeth more against samba and the latin way of playing jazz, and together with this german big band it doesn´t work particulary well. Great ambitions, yes, but the result isn´t great. Back with Joan Chamorro big band it worked better.
A little harsh. Some numbers work spectacularly well and for-the-occasion compositions like "No Home No", "One for Billy", I feel, are likely classics that have extended Rita's musical compass.
True, WDR BB don't do Latin rhythms with any finesse. El Marabino was a cross between a Mariachi, a Hollywood Rio parade and New Orleans marching band. But next time, once the experience has been digested on both sides, I think new capabilities will emerge for both. Like Rita, WDR are adventurers in music, and that makes me happy. I don't want polished at every turn. I want novelty, risk and discovery. This is what jazz does best.
I Completely disagree with you, and I've listening to Jazz, since I was 4 years old, I'm now 60 years old!! I think they're great!!
@@snagrbuster7343 Thats ok! Me myself have followed Joan Chamorros "jazz school" for young people pretty close through years, also Rita, since she was a kid. Maybe this is why I now think this combination with a german big band doesn´t work out the best. I might even think Im wrong?
I agree in part. I think WDR imposes a lot on Rita's playing. In any case, it is clear that despite its youth, it is top-notch jazz music. He's spent an hour improvising and singing as if he's not 22 years old!
Regarding some more Latin topics and there are two videos with the Bing Band of Andalusia where especially the theme "Nunca vas a comprender" can be illustrative of what you comment. Thank you.
