Why Do Stupid People Think They're Smart? The Dunning Kruger Effect (animated)

  • The Dunning-Kruger effect can be observed during talent shows like American Idol. The auditions are usually filled with a variety of good and bad singers. The ones who are bad at it, almost never realize how bad they really are.
Low ability people do not possess the skills needed to recognize their own incompetence or lack of knowledge. Their poor self-awareness leads them to overestimate their own capabilities.
However when you become more knowledgeable about a certain topic, that confidence falls. Only when you start to reach above average skill, is when the your confidence about a certain topic starts to pick up again.
But why? Why does being less skilled make you more confident in your abilities?

I disagree with this quote to be honest. You may think they are stupid, but you are not always right. When someone is really trying to prove their point, and you turn away, that's a really douchebag thing to do.

@EXISTENTIAL CRISIS Well, sometimes you can misjudge. I've had moments where I have a good debate with someone else, but they turn away and ignore me after a while. I can understand why, and I have almost done it before, but what you are actually doing is closing off the opinions of others, which is bad.

To me, it's more like: don't argue with people who want to make a point and be right at all costs. No matter how stupid or smart they are.
I like discussing with people politely, share ideas and perspective. If I know I am not an expert in a matter, I shut my mouth and listen. I may not agree, but if I am no expert, there is a slight chance I might say something stupid.
So I let the ignorant yell at each other.
And I talk only after a thorough research.

3:50 no it's actually the people with average knowledge on a topic that are full of doubt. It makes sense, when you first start learning something you'll likely breeze through the start since you're gonna be learning basic things but as you progress you'll feel overwhelmed by all the information that you don't understand yet. If you truly are intelligent that section of not feeling knowledgeable will be smaller and for most of your time learning that subject you'll feel pretty confident (depends on the subject)

The very first trials were absolute garbage, but once I've done a few bakes, I gained massive confidence and thought I was kinda good at it and that bread making is pretty simple actually.
    Boy, was I wrong.
I've learned more and more and more. And everytime I've learned more, often trough failure, I came to realize: Damn this is complex.
I'm actually doing this as a job now. And I love it. And the stuff I do is good, according to any standard. HOWEVER: I know there is so much more. I've only conquered the very top of the Iceberg. I'm pretty confident to say, that there is propably another 70+% to still learn.
And know what? I'm not going to do that mistake ever again. Some topics may seem very simple at first glance, but in propably 95+% of cases, it's propably way more complex then you could imagine in your wildest dreams.

He said I should be happy to be in that category because then I could confidently research and learn the things that I knew were important and relevant to my job performance.

Experts might not be omniscients, but they will always know a crapload more than anyone else, why do you think they bothered to study a field for 5, 10, 20, 40 years, their whole life? They are smart people, if they thought it is not worth doing it, they would not have learned anything. Yours is an absurd conclusion. It sounds clever, but it's not solid logic. Say, when you eat a lot, do feel hungrier? Or when you get more money, do you feel poorer? Personally, the more I learn something, the more I feel that I know MORE, not less. It will never be 'all', but so what. I don't confuse 'a lot' with 'all'. A lot is a lot, The video is more about stupid people who DON'T know, and go 'I get it'. Not the ones who DO know.

I spent the last 2 weeks making sure it was extra exceptional work.. that could only achieve the highest marks... I had the highest marks out of everybody on the course... I only found out at the time that she had been giving my coursework to somebody else because my GF at the time was asked to assist with organising everybody's coursework into Folders with labelled sections to mark the areas of the course.. because even though we were supposed to do it ourselves many people hadn't... anyway I decided to help my GF at the time tidy it all up.. and she spotted my work that she had seen me do at times in other peoples folders... so yeah.. my lecturer was corrupt and she cried to me asking me why the people on the course hated her and I told her straight it's because she keeps having favourites and neglecting everybody else... They say a mark of intelligence is understanding "cause and effect." And many times, I can agree with this when comedian Bill Engvall admits that he himself is an idiot because he doesn't want to think of "the effect" part of "cause and effect." He's hyper focused on one possibility without giving much thought about other possibilities, which is why he has so many self-deprecation stories to share in his comedy skits and admits he doesn't learn.
Paradoxically none of this means he's stupid though because he accepts that's just who he is. He knows he has a "I'm Stupid" sign on his head and embraces it wholeheartedly, which is the smart thing to do and why he has such a long successful career in comedy.
The Dunning-Kruger effect is strong in Bill Engvall and I can't help but love him for it.

I've heard other arguments that make the case for the "mid-wit". That is, an individual who is very average in intelligence and thus smart enough to grasp the basics of most topics yet not intelligent or disciplined enough to acquire a thorough understanding thereof. What makes them a "mid-wit" is that they lack the intelligence to appreciate their own limitations.
In my own experience, the smartest people whom I have ever known were also very self-critical. I myself am a remarkably unremarkable individual, but I have at least taken the lesson of introspection from these people. If I think I understand something, I question myself and look again. I'll never be very intelligent, but I can at least be thorough and self-critical.
