Kate Fincham was renting a house in downtown Toronto and living with four housemates before she came across a small houseboat for sale in the Scarborough Bluffs area in 2020. Custom built by an artist in the 1990’s, Kate purchased the tiny floating home and moved in with her cat. See how she brought in her own personal touches by transforming the multi-functional small space into a modern nautical oasis. In the kitchen, she switched out the cabinet doors with caning and matte black handles - her own clever DIY! The bright and beautiful bathroom features a free-standing tub and water closet, while the main living space has an antique desk facing the lake, perfect for Kate's WFH lifestyle. The sculptural Cloud bookshelf by Cappellini brings visual interest to the room and the loft bedroom leads to a rooftop patio surrounded by greenery and beautiful Lake Ontario.

Very lovely home. It would be quite simple to incorporate a shower, just hang a nice shower curtain. You already have the shower hardware. Its the perfect tub and shower combo. Beautiful tub.
They make moldable tracking that you can screw into the ceiling (i.e. make your own curves). It's very easy to install.
You've made you and your cat a gorgeous home. I can see why you love it there. Being on the water and in nature like that is very also very therapeutic and healing. All the very best, and thanks for sharing! 😊

Loved everything about it. Minimal, light and airy. Would have loved to have seen how that desk turned into an 8 person dining table. What a great space saver and functionality. I was surprised at how wide the boat was. I've seen others that have been much narrower. And what a dream to be able to live on the water like that.
I always loved the idea of a houseboat after seeing the movie Houseboat with Cary Grant and Sophia Loren when I was young. This lives up to my expectations of one,in fact it surpasses them. Enjoy it!!
Lovely home for one plus pet! The shower issue could be resolved by putting up some sort of hook or similar as the cord looks long enough to hook it up or maybe even changing it out for a regular shower head might not be too expensive. Add a lovely shower curtain and you are good to go. The patio is gorgeous too and the sculptural book shelf is probably one of the best pieces!

Ah, i lived on a houseboat for a year in Seattle. It was freezing in the winter, and boiling in the summer, but most of the time I absolutely loved it and have such lovely memories.
How is the waste water disposed of? Why didn’t she want to talk about the ‘water closet’?

I think more and more people are taking to living on the water due to home prices. I live in Connecticut and my dads house is on the water and there is a guy who is now living in our bay on a sailboat. It’s kind of bad ass.

What a beautiful home!! By seemingly simple changes, she made the space feel inviting and elevated at the same time. It sounds so romantic to live on the water. And I love that she talked about and showed the community. One of my newer future aspirations is to get a small cabin someday but I might just look into house boats now

That's funny. Many years ago (decades, actually) I was living with 3 roommates at Bloor and Ossington, and I would have given my eyeteeth to live on a houseboat in the Toronto area. Didn't even know it was possible at that time, but then heard of another woman living in a boat at the Scarborough bluffs! Now I live in a cottage out in the boonies very far from Toronto, but I could still live on a houseboat, maybe on a lake. Kate's house is a very nice design, and her decor is lovely - it makes the view the focus. She didn't say anything about the winters and being on a houseboat when the lake freezes... wondering if they have some sort of bubbler to keep the water open around the boats...
