Because you are living in a floating trailer park at a hight premium. When the house gets rundown you don't own the land so you have no real value

There's pros and con's when living on a house boat. Anyone thinking of doing this may try renting first, or spending a weekend or a few on a sleeper boat to get an idea on what its like to live on the water. She is not discussing storms, cold weather, smells associated with water/docks, noisy neighbors, boats coming and going, sometimes issues with power, water, sewer systems provided by dock services, etc.
My biggest concern is living on a freshwater lake. In winter and keeping the ice from developing around the hull, power goes out and you’re in deep trouble.
I love it but can’t as I have osteoarthritis 😂😂😂😂

I have a friend who at one time was a housesitter. She would look after houses while people travelled. You move every few weeks or months to another location. She was able to avoid paying rent this way for 8 years. She also did boat sitting for clients for a three year period.
Would she get paid for housesitting? Otherwise, pretty hard to hold down a job when you're on the move all the time.
@@Curious2Know2 When you have high speed internet, many of today's jobs can be done from home. She would also get a small stipend from the owners. But with rent out of the way it gave her more disposable income.
I could do that for a year, but always moving and not a having a home of your own for 8 years sounds very depressing.
She has a cozy and idyllic home in an exciting city. I love this story. It is very inspiring.
It's a really worrying trend, but what's worse is that most people are closing their eyes to reality. Life in this country has become unaffordable due to politics. Now people have to live on boats and in "tiny houses" - of course, this is bitter and a real shame in the richest country in the world, but you should talk about it. In our society, there should be living space for everyone.

October of 2020 bought with inheritance and borrowed money. So even house boats are unaffordable now!

Considering the outrageous cost of housing in Toronto, this is a great deal.
Terrible idea, her mooring fees alone are outrageous. She should’ve just bought a condo near the waterfront.
Not if you consider she doesn’t owe any land. If her location kicks her out., she can’t just park the boat and have it livable anywhere
It's better than being homeless. Sadly, more and more people are being priced out of the rental market completely.
But, I would rather buy a condo than live on a house boat. As she doesn't own the dock space or mooring space, the harbor master can evict all the houseboats if they have other plans for the dock.
That's the downside. Which makes it very similar to renting. You are at the mercy of the landlord that owns the dock.
@StarLight-sl9ok She is pleased with her decision, so it doesn't matter what you think she should have done.

Bluffers park marina, I suspect? We had a small sailboat in the 70’s and 80’s in Toronto Hydroplane and Sailing Club. Loved being on the water. I think though, winter would be more of a challenge.

@@stephen-he4iw But she will have lived well with more room and access to nature than most tiny condos in downtown Toronto. I lived there. Great city but those shoebox condos will drive you crazy after a few years. Besides, her monthly costs are not that high - she could have a lot saved in a few years and still enjoy living well in the meantime.

@@jwong1546 Pretty rare to see Minus 20 C in Toronto but I get your point when the weather comes up and you are on the water. I live on the east coast with Nor’ Easter’s and winter storms can be extreme for sure!
@@grantlingley1385 I suspect quite a few owners also have chalets for the winter. If not, and there are others living on the water, time for a little visit and some hot rum toddies! Maybe bring some scones, too.
Yeah -20c near the water is horrible but the cold is part of the Toronto charm.

Thank you for sharing your lovely home and water way-of-life! Living close to nature as opposed to being in an urban area is definitely a unique, vibrant way and having ownership is such a secure feeling as opposed to paying the banks for years make one the master and not the slave. I live on an old rustic wooden trawler in the Pacific North- West and love it's 72 year heritage. Many ways to seek fulfillment.

@@TheJlee28 I believe that it is Bluffers Park, the Scarborough Bluffs on the east side of Toronto. Folks have been living on houseboats there for years. I know some folks who lived on their sailboat there for about 4 years before they sold & moved north.

Love it, good for her. Toronto is expensive to the point of inaccessible in the last few years and she has a space for her that has outdoor area and access to a lake! So what if there are downsides to living on a boat, you can name just as many living in a house, suffocating condo, commuting, etc. She seems happy and her place is super cute! And different.

Fascinating! I lived in a house in the Scarborough Bluffs. It is great to be close to the water. Being right on the water with the bluffs behind and the lake in front looks wonderful. I write this sitting on a deck overlooking Lake Muskoka. Love to be near the water. Not the easiest lifestyle, but far better life than living in a tiny Toronto condo that would cost far more to buy and to maintain. There you look out onto city.

I would love to visit you. We haven’t gone to your area in about a year now, and we did walk by your home. I would love to wake up to then peaceful space, feeding the ducks with healthy food, and enjoy the view. We always got the feeling that everyone is no nice there. Thank you for sharing.

That's a very nice house boat .Toronto and major cities are expensive. But if you work remote , there are 1000 s of small towns where $350,000 , will get you a nice house.

Mooring fees are a killer. Rather like throw this much money at a mortgage rather than wasting them forever... 💯
The mooring fee is almost like paying property taxes. In terms of "wasting," our government definitely doesnt waste that tax money. 🤣

Toronto never sees -40. But it is a wet cold grey winter. Looking out at that view would be great all 4 seasons IMHO. The lake moderates the temp extremes. On a hot sticky July day, go to the bluffs and you'll find it 10 degrees cooler. Same in the winter. Often it snows at the 401 and north. Down there it will be warmer and wetter.

@@Hugo-nw2su Right. It got to -24F in 1859. In 2018 it made news hitting -8F. If you want to see cold weather, Edmonton AB is your place or go where Eskimos hang out. In my 50 years in Toronto, I find the weather grey and a wet cold like England, but not cold crisp and dry like -40.

Winters would be crazy
If I was single, I would entertain the idea, but 250k minimum for a house boat sounds insane... our first home was a mobile and the lot rent fees were more than the mortgage; that got very tiring after a few years.
I agree. I see this as a great home solution for a few more years and then wanting a different lifestyle later in life.
@@vintagejaki751 for sure; we moved after 4yrs, sold the home to my father-in-law just to pay off what was owed, rented for a year while saving up a down-payment and bought an 'actual' home.
Now, 9 years later, we are planning to sell this house and our land (we wanted to build a new home but have decided to avoid that headache), and move up to a bigger home... kiddos and us need a bit more space, haha

Unfortunately, in Canada $250K is the absolute minimum for a studio condo in the cities. A 1 bedroom will be $300-$700K depending on the city, and a 2 bedroom will always be more than $500K. Currently I am in Toronto and renting a 2 bedroom that would be worth $1M, the rent is almost $4K a month..
I would like to see this video shot in the winter. Sure it is beautiful looking in spring and summer but lets not forget we have 6 months of winter in Toronto.

Bluffers Park is beautiful .. the only snag is , much like the beaches, the entire area is swarmed and taken over by inconsiderate visitors setting up camp for the day., spoiling the enjoyment of local residents .
Try going down the road in there. One lane each way. The road feeds a beach, a park and boat launch. Its packed every week end. Cars backed up all the way to the main road running east and west. Its like that every weekend from late spring to warm weekends in the fall. No thanks.

I curious how much wood you would typically use in a winter and where would you access it??
She's happy with the lifestyle, that's what matters. But the monthly cost is around $3000 cad for financing and mooring fees. Add to that, insurance, heating, maintenance, etc. So cost is probably similar to renting in downtown Toronto.
I live in a small fishing village in Nova Scotia and I've often thought about a houseboat type cottage but I don't think it would work in my area because of the high waves and swells .. My youngest son has 2 condos in Toronto both are close to the CN Tower , he rents 1 out and lives in the other ..1 is in an older building and 1 is in a new building ..

in about 5 years those house boats will cost 1 million each

Not sure (or when) you bought your houseboot for $250k, but today you cannot get any of them for under $650k .. and that is for a small 650sqft unit! So you are either really lucky OR this took place back when house prices were reasonable once again showing that Toronto, Canada is out of touch with reality!

$2000 in fees month is crazy. Even with the crazy housing prices in Toronto. You had $300k which could have been a good downpayment and then $2000 a month towards a mortgage. Could have bought a condo downtown of similar size.
how does it connect to sewer for human wastes?
She mentioned it gets pumped out. So you have a tank that holds your $H1T and every now and then someone comes and pumps it out..
It depends on the boat and marina. Her fees include electric and water. There may be a cartridge system like on RVs. They may also have sewage hook ups for houseboats.
And there are pump out versions. Like an outhouse, portapotty, or septic tank.

Good idea, given the high cost of property in the city, what did the government do to help the average Canadian who are priced out of the market and suffering from high rent ??
I don't really consider Scarborough Bluffs as "near downtown Toronto" but ok. I like it but I'm still skeptical on what it's like in winter. Winters can be brutal in those parts. And the inspection and repair fees that you said occur every 3ish years is what I'd really like to know more about.

The visitors going to the Scarborough Bluffs have changed a lot since i was born. The park has to put up dozens of Port a potties just to deal with visitors going in the open. It's a dirty dirty city to be in unfortunately. However I grew up in Toronto and have fond memories of the Scarborough Bluffs in the 80s & 90s and the pretty little house boat community and the little bar at the end of the dock.
I think it's unfortunate that people who grew up in the city can't really aspire to home on property real estate ownership. And rent generally takes more than is fair share of income.
I assume you live at Buffers Park marina , Scarborough .... south of Kingston Rd and Midland Ave

These "boats or house boats" are NOT boats, they are not able to leave the marina on their own power. They are floating barges and are not for recreational use. Marina use is recreational (also commercial as appropriate) and zoned as such. These homes are taking up space for recreational boaters and also driving up costs for docking etc. The basic rule for people living on vessels was the vessel needed to leave the marina on their own power and return to their slip on a three day notice. This rule stopped people from buying junk boats and living on them. These House Boat units are not built to any standard (not to building standards nor ABYC boat standards ) and as such can not be moved to a building lot if the owner is told that the marina no longer allows these units. Talk to people that have experience gained from the Outer Harbour experience with the development of the failed bid to allow these type units. People lost hundreds of thousands of dollars. It is only a matter of time before these units are forced to leave. Then what do you do with your unit. You are certainly not going down the road nor going to move to another marina. Again this water is for recreation purposes and if you want to live aboard then you need to live on a boat. This is a very risky purchase and it is just a matter of time before they may be asked to leave. It has been fairly low key in that marina but articles like this may change that situation. You need to do your due diligence and protect your investment.
