In this video, I discuss the 10 things I learned installing the Blum undermount drawer slides for the first time. Rather than give a detailed instructional of how to install these Blum drawer slides, I simply hit on what I believe are some invaluable tips and tricks to help make installing these much easier. It's also worth noting that these tips will specifically apply to face frame cabinets, particularly existing face frame cabinets.
We purchased our Blum undermount drawer slides from Woodworker express. It's worth noting that the prices have fluctuated a little since we purchased ours (a few months back) but below is their website along with the exact model and parts we used for this install:

Dude!!! This is hands down the BEST undermount drawer slide video on the internet. 3 GREAT tips in this video probably save 20 minutes installation time per drawer box. Tip 1: measure between installed slides for drawer box width, this tip alone probably saved viewers a few cusswords trying to figure out what 58/64 minus 23/32, divided by 2 after finding out square root of pie. Tip 2: set drawer box on slides and bump a few times to find where back holes are to be drilled. Tip 3: if building your drawer boxes, a captive bottom on back of drawer box saves another huge time consuming step of cutting out notches. FYI to other viewers 21" Blum is back ordered until Dec. 2022 on locking devices, and May 2023 on slides at Woodworker express. Woodworker express sell a competitor. This video worked on Grass slides (same concept) which are a Dynapro product I think.
Hi Clint! Thanks for the kind words! Glad you found this helpful. I've found this also works with Pride Industrial undermount slides as well. As you've noted, the days of Blum availability have sadly disappeared.
Heads up you can still get Movento slides off Lee Valley. That's the only place I could find either tandem or Movento.
You can still get them faster than Dec 22. I order only from a company in Billings, MT. Not on their website anymore because of the back log but you can call them directly and order over phone. I received my complete order for my kitchen remodel in less than 2 months. Anyone that is is as interested in the company can easily find it easily with google by adding some further search terms. By far the best prices on Blum I have found.
Wow!! So glad I found your video before I started my installation. One of the best how-to videos around-no chitchat, good pace, music is good but not too loud, hilarious movie clips! Thank you soooo much!
Glad it helped! Thanks for the kind words!
Blum should hire you. You're a lot easier to understand than the dang engineering drawings that pass for instructions. Thanks!
😂😂😂 Thanks Gary. Yeah it's weird how overly complicated those instructions are. After I got them installed I knew a video needed to be done to try and show a few things that I learned. Glad they helped!
Thanks, you did a great job explaining this installation. Many years ago I freaked out a little bit when a customer requested tandems on their new kitchen. Now they are our standard drawer runners. Once again, great video 👍
Thank you!
I am SO glad I watched this video. I was worried about a few things regarding installation of these Blum undermount drawer slides, primarily how to get the hole on the back of the drawer drilled in the right place (without buying a $60 jig). Your tips will save me some time and money for sure. Thank you so much.
Happy to help! Thanks for watching!
Good job, straight to the point, very clear. One thing I would've liked to of known is the adjustability of the guides.
This is really helpful. I'm going to install these slides sometime next week, and you really described the process very well. Thank you. Subscribed.
At a first glance at the site that you recommended the slides look to be a lot less in price, but right now (07-24-2024) the 21" Blum slides for 3/4" (18-19mm) stock are the same price from Amazon if you have Prime (free shipping) membership, and it's the complete kit. No fussing around hoping that you're getting the correct parts for the slides. The shipping cost really adds up. Just my opinion, but I think that thin 1/2" (12mm) stock makes the drawer look and feel trailer park cheap :-)
Again, thank you for the very informative video for these slides. You are very good at this, and look forward to watching more of your content.
This is awesome! Thanks for making this!
Thanks for showing me where to buy these for less than 50 dollars a set saved me 450 dollars. Good man.
Glad I could help!
Nice tips. Orrin stalling the rail then measuring outside distance is a great tip. Saved some shenanigans with the math, thanks
Thanks Neil! Glad they helped! That's one of my favorites as well. Otherwise it's a little nerve wracking trying to do that math... 🤣
@@DebtFreeDIY I’m retrofitting the slides onto already installed boxes, so that measurement was great for setting the space between the front locking pieces. My drawers are 22” though, and the slides 21”, so I’m hoping that’s close enough that I won’t need to shorten the drawer depth. In your experience, is there a bit of latitude with the depth or does it have to be exact? Thanks
@@neilphillips3193 if I understand right that you're talking about the actual drawer depth, unfortunately it has to be pretty much 21 on the nose. Mine were like that too, along with fixed drawer fronts and not enough space below the drawer bottom ended up being why I rebuilt my boxes for my existing cabinets. 😔
@@DebtFreeDIY good to know. Fortunately- the drawers aren’t glued, so it won’t be too hard to partly break them down and trim the sides and bottom. Thanks for the info
@@neilphillips3193 right on. Will you just trim them down on the tablesaw?
Great video. Thanks for the tips, and helping me source them a little cheaper.
Great video, thank you! Clear, concise and right to the point. I just ordered a bunch of these slides recognizing they are the way to go. Especially thanks for the don't slice your fingers tip. That would easily be done. Im sure I'll be rewatching this video over and over. Cheers from Canada!
Hi Glenn! Thanks so much for watching! Glad you found the video helpful. If I can help in any way just reach out!
I’m summoning up the courage towards retro fitting my old chest of drawers with bottom sliders. That video was great. I’ll take a closer look at it in the morning and head to the hardware store maybe. Thanks.
Sounds Awesome! Hope all works out. Holler if you have any questions!
Great job of explaining the installation!!! One of the very best I have seen Thank you!
Absolutely, Gary! Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Great video - thanks for sharing those lessons learned
Great, simple, step by step tips. Thanks for the links.
You're welcome! Thanks for the kind words and for watching! 😊
Thanks man, you are right. Other videos makes this look so easy, but in reality there is a learning curve. And Blum guide is difficult to configure out. Contacted Blum engineer , even they could not explain in one pass.
Glad to help! Thanks for watching!
Love the heart wipe
Very helpful, thabk you!
Thanks so much, Great info, and thanks for saving me some dollars, really appreciate that!!!!
No problem Steven! If you find the Blum out of stock right now, in our latest video we added cabinetry to our pantry and tried an import brand carried by Dakota Hardwoods called Pride Industrial. They were almost identical and so far seem to work great. Holler if we can be of any help!
Very helpful. Thanks.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video I ordered my slides from the link you provided. Shipped same day!
Fantastic! Thanks for watching!
I'm custom fitting these to my cabinets now cutting the square bigger, adding framing on the inside so i can mount sliders. It's going good 👍
Awesome! 💯
Great video!!🎉🎉
Thanks Joanie!
Good video 😊
Thanks for the tips, I love Blum drawer slides but they are quite a mystery at first. That face frame job must the been a back breaker! Again, thanks for the tips.
You're welcome! Face frame was definitely a challenge!
Just fine on the video. What I was looking to clear up was the box size. 21"..fine. But if the front box panel differs in thickness, then attach the clip to it, that distance will vary. 3/4 front, . 3/8" back shorten the box 3/8"
One of the problems we had: the long roller bar slid back and forth in the plastic channel affixed to the back of the cabinet which made the drawer go askew and be out of plane. We drilled a hole in the end of the roller bar into the plastic channel and in the back of the cabinet to keep it stable.
(I think) you only need those rear clips for face frame cabinets. If you have frameless cabinets you don't need it. SUCH a helpful video, especially the first part about how to figure out the drawer box measurement. Thank you so much!
Thanks for pointing that out! I agree on the frameless cabinets. I believe they would just attach to the side of the cabinet box. Glad you found it helpful! They're intimidating at first but I prefer undermount over anything now.
Thanks, I enjoyed the video!
One thing, you mentioned 3/4” thick drawer boxes. These under mount slides are designed for up to 5/8” drawer thickness.
Thank you. If I said 3/4 that was definitely a mistake. I've never made 3/4" drawers in my life. 😂 Always 1/2 for me
@@DebtFreeDIY same here, hoping to switch to 5/8 someday
Hey man, thank you for the great tips on installing the drawer slides. This will be my first attempt at installing anything like this and I appreciate your help. I am building a pull out shelf for a turntable that goes into a cabinet and I have two questions: First, I want to mount these slides directly down on a larger shelf instead of side mounted, are there holes on the bottom of the slides for this? And secondly, what's the best way to drill the holes attaching the clips to the underside of the box if I don't have the Blum jig/template? Thank you again for your amazing advice.
Hi Jonathan, so you can totally mount these flat down depending on the brand. The Blum brand however, I know you can because I did myself. As for the clips, I just used a self centering drill bit and drilled a pilot hole with the that. A regular drill bit would work too if you manually keep it centered. Hope that helps! If you have Instagram, you can DM me over there and I'd be happy to chat in more detail if needed. My Instagram handle is in this video's description.
nice vid
Oh man. I am about to start my project and should have watched your video first. I knew about 5 of those things already, but took me a long time to get to that point. Plus the Blum website is not user friendly with info all over the place. Much appreciated sir.
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching!
Ain’t nobody got time for that!
😂

Howdy. I am getting ready to do the same project. Did you have a racking problems with your drawers? I am wondering if I need to get the lateral stabilizer.
Zero racking on ours. They're extremely stable on their own.
@@DebtFreeDIY Thank you!! You just saved me 300 bucks!! Great video. Just sent subbed!
What thickness material did you use for the sides ie would 18mm work
So I used 1/2 Baltic Birch for my sides. I do believe you can use something like 18mm. I think they make a different slide for 3/4 material so I bet that would be what you'd have to do. If you call Woodworker Express their customer service is very good and would be able to give you a more definitive answer.
Seriously could kiss you thank you so much
Glad it helped!
Can Blum Undermount Drawer Slides be used for toe kick drawers?
Hi Bill! That's a great question. And unfortunately I'm not very familiar with toe kick drawers so I'm probably not gonna be much help on that. Sorry!
Pan head or flat head on the screws?
Flat head
Will you just come install mine please? 😂
So I misheard about measuring the width of slides once installed as that’s the INSIDE. I made my boxes to the outside diameter. Ugh off to HD I go 😅
Dang it!
@@DebtFreeDIY I felt as I mocked everything up that “wow why is there an 1.5” of space on each side..” wish I would have rewatched the video!
🤦🏻♂️
Oh come on, the instructions are as plan as day, if you can't do the math you should not be installing drawer slides.
Flexing your intellectual superiority on the internet is usually best achieved by first using proper punctuation and spelling.
@@DebtFreeDIYthat was awesome
How much room do you leave clearance for the mottom clips 1/2"?
Yes. The drawer bottoms are raised 1/2"
@@DebtFreeDIY awesome thanks. Great video!
@@2011leoc thank you!
Ok. Not sure where unfit the pricing from but if your finding them from Amazon for twice as much as $18 for a single pair of undermounts….?? Unless I misunderstood u, but Amazon can def beat that pricing no doubt.
