This song is one of tools best songs in my opinion. It has EVERYTHING we like from tool, excellent musicianship, witty humour, and some form of message that lies just under the surface that you kind of need to dig a bit to find.
This is definitely one of the most complicated songs theyve written musically too, but its so well written it doesnt even feel that complex. It flows perfectly even though its packed to the brim with polymeter and polyrhythm. Just an absolute work of art and to me its one of the crown jewels of this band.

This particular song just has insane depth , musically , emotionally and lyrically , and i mean beyond the obvious usage of drugs , its so much about the psychology and a reaction of someone trying to find some meaning or truth behind it and how much those thoughts can reveal to you insecurities or strengths and the list keeps on going. When i first heard of this song , I thought to myself this is literally the closest to someone can verbally explain the madness that is tripping , tip-toeing on that makes sense but it doesn't. You can vicariously experience the trip.

Loved the review! Epistemology is my favorite too Vin! Its a deadhead thing. Us Dudes like me, we talk metaphysics, axiology, and epistemology all the time. Philosophy is the favorite subject of us psychonaughts as we call ourselves. When you experience altered states of consciousness to the levels we do, it raises endless questions and we sit around theorizing about the nature of life. You get deep into subjects like chaos theory and determinism for example which seems oddly familiar to God and Free Will if you think about it. Multiverse theory... All kinds of absolutely fascinating thought experiments you run by each other. That's that deadhead chemistry. 😝 we love it!
Are we going deep within or are we travelling outside ourselves? That's another talking point you can spend days discussing.
One take away is most people, not all but most come away with a distinct and very real feeling of an eternal soul. A sense of purpose beyond this life. Then we discuss it with each other. It is a BLAST!
Anyway, thanks again for everything you have done for me. I talk too much 😄 so I'll stop now.

All I can say is that it's truly worth the time to check out Grateful Dead and if it clicks, it clicks! Definitely not for everyone. It is however impossible to deny the impact they had on forging the psychedelic community's very existence and that is something a psychonaut must at least respect. For me it’s an analog to anything in your life that happens without your advance preparedness, due attention, and/or proper memory capabilities (due to lost sleep, inebriation, etc). I fucking hate that feeling, and it happens all the time... So often I feel like I’m being distracted, that I’m just outside of recognizing something important or remembering something fully that’s on the tip of my tongue. Jesus, what if it’s important? Like reeaallly important?!?

rx7dude2006 not ironic one bit. Makes perfect sense actually. A god existing is the only logical conclusion to the question of where did everything come from. Take the Big Bang theory for example. Where did that original pinpoint of matter come from? What makes more sense? That a single dot of matter has existed for a prior eternity or a god existed for an eternity?

Capitaomac1 there is no logical answer to that other than to say if there really is a god, one true real god, why would anything need to create it or come before it. My point is that a god existing for eternity makes more sense than some tiny ball of matter existing for eternity.

the song is about an actual experience that a friend of the band had. he apparently headed out into the desert and when he came back to the guys he told them the story about what had happened to him, so they wrote the song a few years later. He told the guys “ he swears something happened to him”. Drummer Danny Carey tells the backstory in this interview respect :) czcams.com/video/dlJLNxe3Ga8/video.html

This song is all about a DMT trip based on a true story outside of Area 51. This is supposedly a story that was recounted to Maynard. Shitting the bed is another way to say I fucked up or you screwed up. It's not literally shitting the bed. The beginning of Lost Keys is the tripper being taken to a hospital and recounting the story to a Doctor(Maynard)

He’s talking about an acid trip gone wrong, out in the desert by Nellis Air Force Base, which contains Area 51. He says “it must’ve been the dead head chemistry, the blotter got right on top of me.” Dead head chemistry is a reference to LSD and how Grateful Dead fans, also referred to as Dead heads, would manufacture and use LSD quite often. A blotter is the “tiny stamps” that are used to dose LSD.

I just have so much respect and admiration for all four of these guys. Incredible band! They did play this, and it was incredible. I could barely see Maynards silhouette next to the drums.
