I agree with this! I've always had people tell me why I can't do things, and it's affected me to the point that I'm the one looking for reasons why I can't do the things I want to do. It's pretty inspiring to see Morley just go "hey I had this crazy idea. Let's go do it right now"

I love your attitude so much, dude. I've watched several of your videos and I really love your problem->idea->failure->solution->compromise->breakthrough->reflection format. I think it's so great how you show your failures in not only how something technically went wrong, but possibly how you may have had an inaccurate mental model of the thing you're trying to do. I think it's all so important and it's truly inspiring to see. Keep doing your thing, Morley. You're great. Just great man. Thanks for letting us all get to know you, and good luck in the future videos.

Well done. I have few ideas just in case if there is some enthusiasm to continue the project is left even after the dji sponsorship has ended -
    1) Building the 3D object 2% larger would have allowed you to fit it over the carbon fibre fender. No need to remove it, plus double strength. Just get longer screws to fith them both together. EDIT- after watching till the end, I saw it break. So I would suggest you to really keep the original fender, build a fender on top of it using a large pvc water pipe. Shape it using heat g*π. Create cradle for dji unit with similar technique. Or just make slits on it to just run the strap through it and the dji pack is fixed.
    2) Must add 2nd 100watt pannel, stick it side by side on the same wooden structure, letting it stand out more on both sides. Whether you use the overhead bracket or not, two pannels hanging on your backpack will always come useful. And presumably you do not need a backpack anymore after building the pvc pipe fender. You can just strap two pannels together with shoulder straps to carry them on the back.

If you do still wanna explore riding with a deployed solar panel you should really look into a lighter weight solution than wood. Something akin to collapsible tent rods would be ideal and with some savy crafting you could possibly just reuse the ones from the tent you're carrying with you anyway.

  • @MarcoDiFiore

Great stuff, as always. I think, with the battery pack in your bag, you might be better off having the solar panels across your shoulders / back as they're curved so they'll still see a lot of sun if they kind of wrapped around your bag ... and you'd be able to get rid a lot of that extra weight from the wooden frame.

This one was an absolute BANGER bro.
    A few thoughts:
    1. It seems like the onewheel could use more air in the tire, no?
    2. It's worth picking up a cheap welder for like $79 and learning to use it... Good to have on the van, and you could've welded the frame out of aluminum, saving a ton of weight and gaining strength. Though, you might need a proper MIG welder for aluminum, I'm not sure you can stick weld it, haven't tried yet.
Keep up these projects man, I love them.

Maybe if the frame for everything were attached to the mode of locomotion, so you don't have to carry it on your back, and then maybe another wheel for stability, and then you could make some way to add in your own energy to help it out for those steep hills. Might as well have some kind of gearing system to change impedence between your output and the kind of terrain. Might even be able to mount the whole thing to the back of the van.

you could totally make that solar panel mount less bulky by using like aluminum pipe and the using tension rods to give it the arc (like a tent). Would be much lighter then the wood. Also if you actually wanna charge it while riding theres a few "open source" style one wheel alternatives that would require the stringent rules that one wheel inflicts on its products. (You cant even replace the battery or they will brick themselves). Look up float wheel or superflux.

Oohhh I understand. I’m actually not sure how quickly the battery of the OneWheel is depleted! Definitely would be dependent on riding conditions. Would be an interesting experiment.

Use a cigs solar panel...but the folding panels will do...
Why we need a molded battery around the fender!!! I would have used tent poles and cordage to make frame...

Time to create the "Open Wheel", by replacing the firmware that prevents you from riding while charging, replace the batteries, and use a lighter solar panel rig. ;) all open source, of course. :D

I realize you need the sponsor angle, but wouldn't it work just as well not carrying around a big extra battery and just charging the smaller internal battery directly? If it's one of those that won't let you operate it while charging, you can fix that by bypassing the charging port input and hooking up directly to the BMS (may also require changing out the BMS but a suitable one can be had for about $20-30).

I only watched 13 minutes of this video and I can guess that at most you will generate about 30W of power with this thing. The folding panels are not very efficient. you would be better off with a 100W flexible panel from Renogy or SunPower and with that based on the angles you may only get 60W max. The panels need to face the sun completely to be producing rated power.
