When I first got this album in 1996, I remember my jaw dropping when I heard Danny Carey's polyrhythm on this song at the 6:35 mark. I sat at my drums for hours trying to wrap my mind around playing 3/4 on the hi-hat while holding down 4/4 on the rest of the kit. I put the song on ice till now, and finally worked my way through it. As always, playing a Tool song was a lot of fun, and I hope you like it too. Thanks for watching!

Skateboarding and drums! Well done Tony Hawk!
Really...... I c more of a post jail Ed Norton on American history x
Please don't disrespect if you can't do both, this guy is amazing.
@@santoshbhattarai2635 I don’t think he’s disrespecting him I think he’s just making a joke that he kinda looks like tony hawk which is pretty funny
@@briantripoli5348 great
*Johnkew
As impressive as it is to hear....and see...someone play this, it's even more amazing to me to think that Danny has the creative insight to write it this way. Genius.
Third Eye is a great song, thanks for that request. I will probably get around to playing that one, but for the next Tool song I'm thinking The Grudge.
johnkew February 16, 2020 and still waiting for Third Eye. Great drumming nonetheless!
yeah time to shine brah!!
Pneuma!!
Did you know the beginning sound that kinda sounds like claves isn't even percussion? It's guitar
lol how?
You strum the strings behind the bridge
I have like 2 cm of string behind the bridge
oh right. adam uses a les paul
Yup he does
Always my favorite tool song. Loved that part where the high hat is every third. So confusing.
It's not tbh, it's a 3:4 polyrhythm. It's fairly basic actually for Danny Carey he has far more confusing.
j b lmao don’t be a douche not everyone knows polyrhythms
@@jb-rm2ds lol basic for Danny is still hard as hell for 95% of drummers
Agree. That is a lot harder then you would think
@@jb-rm2ds It's polymeter. Don't be condescending AND wrong.
The inner happiness at 2.22 is priceless.
Awesome! If Carey gets the flu, call johnkew!
Hey that rhymed
aenima is my favorite tool album
@ScalerWave Thanks Jim - yeah the intro has all of those triplets happening over the 4/4, it really sounds odd until you listen a few times. I love that drum polyrhythm at 6:30, where Carey plays 3/4 on the hi-hat and 4/4 on the snare/kick, and they overlap every 3 measures - insane.
That's my favorite part of any tool song. And eulogy isn't even my fav song by them.
Man, that's real dedication during the intro! You have amazing attention to detail.
6:35 mark had my jaw dropping too mate. They ain't triplets tho. It's a 3 on 4 polirhythm and it stuck in my head so ferociously that still now after years i have even touched a drumstick i unconsciously play it. If math really is God's language then this polirhythm is God's singing.
I think hes meaning the accent (open hi-hat) on every third hi-hat sixteenth note and he's just referring to it as "triplets". I don't think he literally meant "triplets" due to the fact that he didn't play it that way in this cover.
I think the same. I've never touched a drumstick by I feel like I could play these songs just by hearing them so much.
Anyway I'm surely a mess on drums
It's called Sacred Geometry. Ask Danny Carey, he'll tell you all about it...
@MrSpunkpump Cool, it's great to know that these videos are good for more than one viewing. Each time I learn a Tool song, I'm amazed at how much work Carey put into composing the drums. By the way, as a Rush fan maybe you'll be glad to know that I'm trying to convince a couple of other musicians to collaborate on Freewill.
Hell yeah. I played along with bass. It’s like a virtual jam session
6 years from my previous comment. Still one of the best drummers to watch to. Regards from Brazil
That snare sounds amazing, like the 90's
Seeing it maybe 50th time and It's just as cool as the first time I saw it.
My lord, that polyrhythm. You fuckin rock man.
Same day Skyrim was released. My favorite song and my favorite game lol
Damn. Couldn't help but smile when it got to the bridge!
most people would have copped out and waited for the actual drums to start up, but you played the whole damn thing :D
Thanks man! You're the second person in a week who knows Danny Carey, at least through friends. I hear he's really laid back and great to talk with. What a great experience that must have been to be in the studio with these guys. Thanks for watching, and for your feedback.
That relief when the 6:35 polyryhthm ends 😅😅
love that snare sound
i been playin drums for about 24 yrs now-the best tool cover i ever heard!!!!!awsome coordination!! when my band covered this song it took me over a week to get that part at 6:35!!!! i had to break it down and listen to it over and over again. but tool covers were my favorite-great fucking job!!!!!
Most drummers take several takes to do different percussions and drum and the same time. But when you're a bad ass, 10 different percussion parts at once. Well done. Amazing stuff.
That Snare is so MEAAAAN
I don't get people sometimes, who dislikes this? It's executed freakin' close to perfect, perfect being Danny Carey
Damn bro, the casual listener has no idea how hard these polyrhythms are to play……Well done John 🙇
Well... nothing to say. Your Tool covers are amazing. I wait for Schism on your channel. It is nice to watch you to doing such a great job. Then Patient and Ticks & Leeches can come along. Hope you read this comment and do your art invency to these genious (like all Tool songs) songs. I'm a bassist by myself and Justin is making me to practice in every free moment with my guitar. Drum 'n bass communication is like this is realle rare in our times.
Sorry for my english. Im fron Poland :)
I've been trying to get down that polyrhythm at 6:35 and so far I can play the first 1 1/2 measures of it lol. It's so hard. Great job nailing this song dude.
I just figured it out then haha. Took me a while too.
John Kew played that part so wrong don't follow his technique
Glenn Quagmire Dang. Went to your uploaded video page to see how it's done...but alas... I want to see how it's done.
Tarek Elmani the only difference is that after the open high hat you don’t hit the hat with your stick for the next beat just close it
I always just watch this to see the polyrhythm....incredible..
That. Is AWSOME..!!!
Complete shred
This guy needs millions of subs
Watching John's drumming to these Tool songs makes me appreciate Danny Carey (and the whole band) on an even deeper level than I ever thought possible. Extremely well done. Also- incredibly fun to watch the mechanics of all this!!
The only person who could play this better, is Danny Carey himself, and even then I think we wouldn't be able to tell the different... You're truly an inspiration.
I'm watching, just waiting for a screw-up so I can be a troll and post a negative comment without having any videos of my own, but no dice. You absolutely nailed it. Youre vid is an inspiration to me to shut up with the comments and finally post some vids of my own. I havn't drummed im 4 years because of living in the middle of a city and having no place to practice, but now I'm back home, getting the kit back together. Again, just know dude youve really inspired me and thank you for posting.
Holy cow,the creepy hi hat part at 6:40, you nailed it. Its all about the details, really great work. Love it!
Saw your message, this is great HQ drum covers, Tool covers by far are awesome to watch.
The bridge where he says “you claimed all this time…etc. is so fucking hard. Trying to learn it rn. For sure the most technical part of this one.
Omg that pinky finger!! It’s killing me!!
Sick hi hat work! Well done!
All time favorite tool song. Beautifully done!
Dude this is just fucking nasty. I love it.
That's a Pearl free-floating maple snare. I was using an Evans G2 coated batter and hazy snare side head.
Oh, lord Maynard, you can stand to danny carey's habilitties. You really got stuff man, respects
That was one of the best covers I've seen. Great job!
Wow! Amazing dude.
Beautiful!!!
GREAT! I love this song
I've just watched all the eulogy's drum covers.
that's the the better one.
cheers.
Amazing playing!
@THSurvivalGear Thanks for bringing up Opiate, that song really takes me back! I remember buying that album on cassette tape before going on an archaeological field school for six weeks. I nearly wore that tape out listening to it over and over on my Walkman. Excellent suggestion my friend!
Just incredible. Well done. With everything.... the production both video and audio also. Wow!
You are really opening my eyes on tool's work. Very great performance for you and whoever writes / wrote tool's songs is now my favorite drummer
Carey is a GENIUS.
LOVE TO SEE TOOL DRUMMING EXCELLENT JOB DUDE
I've never seen a more talented drummer. I've listened to this song 150 times.. It's one of my favorites, and you NAILED every intricacy..
Amazing! Just wow!
super props to ya man !!! excellent
Simply awesome. I listened with my eyes wide open...
A shaker! It finally explains what I've been *hearing* in this song. Thank you for giving me that insight.
You've earned a like and a sub! Good work and great job with the polyrhythm!
I've always wanted to learn this song on drums and now this video has inspired me too! Awesome playing!
I had gotten used to just liking and favoriting your videos before viewing them because I knew you put out great videos, but this one really blew me away. Superb quality and dedication to playing the different sounds that Danny Carey likes to make. Keep rockin'
dude, Danny would be proud! fantastic cover
He's definitely one of the most laid back and "normal" of the band :P That being said, he comes up with the most unreal musical tracks... as a bass player I can really appreciate how amazing the drum lines for Tool are - the only problem is, it means I can never find a drummer who can play them with me!
He is wayyyyy Kewl!! It was amazing being in studio with them. Been around the biz and around alot of bands...TOOL is a class act all the way around!! Keep up the great work...We'll be watching.
6:38 that high hat. kick and snare work is awesome. Thats always been my favorite part of that song and that part is not easy. You completely nailed it spot on. Awesome bro and I really appreciate getting to watch you work and do so with the hardest drumming you could pick.. Awesome
you mister make music with that drums, with every beat, sweeter to my ears than anything else...you're a genius! I really enjoy your videos :))
I like your style. Raw and class
The best .. Thump up for you mr. John
You, sir, are absolutely amazing. I am a huge tool/ Danny carey fan as well and i appreciate all the effort put in. Keep on rockin!
Peaches & Cream! Well done Sir...
John, you've come such a long way. You're a stellar drummer.
@Drum4Dream Thanks so much man, I'm always happy when I find people who appreciate this song.
This is killer dude, that polyrhythm is one of my favorite things ever.
You seriously inspire me to become a drummer since that's one of my favorite instruments. Danny Carey is a very talented dude and so are you man.
Practice makes permanent. Nice job Johnkew
That was wonderful!
JJ
I love that filter change!
Brilliant!!!
Wow, thanks for your awesome feedback! It really motivates me to keep making these videos.
the bridge the rest of the song was awesome man. i lvoe your stuff
I have been drumming for 11 years and this is the most fun outside of drumming myself that I have had watching someone else play. I have seen Tool 6 times and 5 of those times, I manage to arrange my seating to be as close to behind DC as possible. Your covers are as close as I have gotten, short of watching the original (DC), as far as precision and sheer gravitas
Amazing !!!
Dude this guy's covers are really fudging good he puts a lot of effort into making all the other seperately recorded sounds as well in the beginning... awesome
this deserves more views
Wow! Insane
You're the man!! Heck yeah
I do use Audix mics now (and love them), but on this recording I was using a Shure SM57 on the snare, a AKG D112 bass drum mic, and cheap DR mics on the toms.
Freaking awesome!
Love your videos man. The beginning is indeed a guitar.
my favourite tool song of all time. never surpassed :).
sickest cover of this song on youtube! awesome job man!!!
Nicely done!!
easily the best tool cover i have seen played, fucking kool bro. useine electronic kit as well as acoustic kit makes a difference aye. good stuff dude you the man
That was amazing! :)
You're an amazing drummer.
Oh, and kudos on the intro bit! Before the drum kit actually comes into play. That part JUST blew me away.
Epic cover dude! Your videos are next level. Wasn't expecting that intro!
That was pretty much flawless. Great job. Especially the percussion and pad bits. That stuff is very hard to pick out by ear.
unreal awesome!!!!!!
