Tool Invincible - Johnkew Drum Cover
After listening to the new album, Invincible was immediately a standout song. And it was probably the favorite song I heard them play live on the tour. Danny's songs are always such a pleasure to learn, and to play. The constant experimenting with 3 over 7 in this song is outstanding, and the way DC orchestrates it throughout the song proves once again that he is a true master of the art, and that he continues to improve.
I'm very excited to be recording again, this time in a new home studio. I'm loving way the drums are sounding with this new setup, and I'm looking forward to recording more songs. As always, thanks for watching and for your feedback. I can't believe it has been almost a decade since I uploaded my first drum video to this channel. And many of you have been watching and commenting since nearly the beginning, so thank you!

New Tool album. New studio. New video soon. Yes I'm still alive. And guess what I've been working on? I can't wait to record this for real and share it with you guys!
Hum - Stars - Drum Recording

This is the studio recording of the cover song we (Portraits) did of 'Stars' by Hum. The music video was released two weeks ago, but I wanted to put this up if anyone is interested in the full drum video. I hope you enjoy, and thanks for watching! Mixed and mastered by Hurt Studios and Tim Morris. Special thanks to Benn Down for vocals and guitar.
Portraits - Stars (Hum)

After already working with Ben for a couple of years, we were having a conversation one day about bands we love, and came to the realization that Hum was majorly influential for both of us. I had watched them play some local circuits and small clubs back in the 90s and was immediately hooked. So we planned then to cover one of their songs, and now it has (finally) materialized. I hope we captur...

Z.1 Deadhead - Studio Drum Recording

This is the original recording studio session for the song Deadhead on the album Z.1, which was released by Hurt Records on August 21, 2017. Of all the songs on the album, this one was the most challenging in terms of raw speed. I actually wore a hole in my shoes! I haven't had much of a chance to promote this album, as I've been busy at work since it was released. But I absolutely love how it ...
Tool - Rosetta Stoned // Johnkew Drum Cover
zhlédnutí 756KPřed 7 lety
What can you say about Rosetta Stoned? A contender for Tool's best song, for sure. And it's definitely one of their most technically complex and difficult songs. People have been asking me to record this one for years now. But it has taken until now to do it because (1) it's 11-minutes of polyrhythms and I'm lazy, and (2), I wanted to do it justice. I can safely say that this was the most diffi...

Islander - Casket // Johnkew Drum Cover

I’m really loving this new album from Islander. Arin Illjey (previously in Avenged Sevenfold) really lays down some sick drums throughout the album, and this song really stood out to me as one of the best. So I thought this would be a good song to introduce my new cymbal setup! Murat Diril graciously offered to take me into their endorser family, and I’m SO stoked on these hand-hammered gems fr...
Mastodon - The Motherload // Johnkew Drum Cover

This one is long overdue. Last year I played along to this song to get my chops back after a drumming hiatus, and I planned on recording it then. More than a year later, and I was telling a friend how hilarious the music video for this song is, and I remembered how great of a song this is. How Brann can sing and drum this arrangement is beyond me. Although what is maybe not so apparent is that ...
Eyes on the King (Benn) // Drum Recording Session

Here's a tracking session for the song Eyes on the King, by Benn. This is not a Portraits song, but a single that Ben asked me to track drums for as an entirely separate project. I really like how the song came together, and it was a lot of fun tracking these drums for it. This is the 'drum mix', and includes only the instrumental music. The full single is available at Hurt Records: www.hurtrec...

A much mellower vibe than my usual, but I've been absolutely loving this song since it was released. It was haunting my dreams, and I decided to record a improvisational take when I was near my studio the other day and had an hour to spare. I didn't even have all my cameras with me, so you're getting a pretty raw recording here, but hopefully it's enjoyable for its Spartan production, for a cha...

Where did you find the percussion sounds you use in the initial part on the electronic pads?
6 years ago I last commented and I'm still here......awesome sounds just love it.. thanks John hope you doing well
I think he played a riff from rosetta stoned in salival but i cabt remember which song
Love ya work. I'm from Australia and one of our all time great drummers is/ was Rob Hurst from midnight oil. I would love for you to listen to some of there music, and find one to put your awesome touch too.....cheers
Great job!
questa è anche meglio di pneuma
Great matching intensity during & after mjk's scream. Sick execution & DC would be proud!
Cant imagine playing this and then another 90min of only tool songs for a concert danny is a beast
i fuck with u bro
Bro. I think it's about time to dust off those sticks and do a cover of 7empest
whew
You play great, simply great, congrats, i think you are the only capable to play tool songs like Dany Carey this is my opinion, you play too much and that sound is almost identical as Danny Carey...
I'm not exactly sure how to say thank you at this level
My calves and forearms are sore just watching
Whom did you learn Tabla from? You killed it! Amazing!
Awesome cover, my favorite is the slow down part I always miss the snare timing.
I’ve seen this sooo Many times and still have the chills the entire time!!!! Simply perfect!!! I can die now!!!
Outstanding 👏👏
*G*R*E*A*T*
Nah
I’ve probably watched you cover Tool on youtube more than I’ve watched Tool on youtube the last few months :-)
You've kept us waiting too long for Pneuma... C'mon... Cover it now... Like... If not now, then when?
Just Fantastic drumming.......🖤
Wow!
Did you play over the song with drums? Because it sounds sometimes not exact :P Very nice job btw!!! Love it
This is the best drumcover of this song on CZcams. Congrats man!
Incrível
Your timing is something else. I can’t believe I just found you tonight.
Чудово! Дуже гарне виконання.. я в захваті 😮 Чи плануєте зіграти "Pneuma"? 😉
Вау😮! Відео 9 років, а я тільки зараз на нього натрапив (( Це щось неймовірне! Дуже круто!
Warrior... Invincible cover...
my brain literally does not work like this. how is this level of drumming possible???
If Danny Carey was a god, Kew would’ve been his main disciple. Amazing performance. One of both Kew’s and DC’s best.
you nailed it
I'm a TOOL fan and obviously, I've been watching all your TOOL covers which are insanely tight and the best TOOL covers ever. But watching this, I'm pleasantly surprised. 🙆🏻♂️ I'm covering this song and this video is helping me a lot. You're just too Amazing 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
The most accurate Tool - The Grudge drum cover that exists online
That was fucking sick bro!
Totally awesome
Wow you are great
That looked like I play it in the air, except I think you need to re-arrange your set. If I were to come back to playing, my hi-hat would be right of center, and every drum I reach for would be in front of me. Nice version. Most of even the good ones don't look this good.
Whenever I want to hear this song this is the version I listen to. Excellent cover
MERINDO ANTE TI!!
MAESTRO!!!!!!
OMG. If Danny was ever sic and could not play (God forbidden) you could stand in.
I don’t think people understand how hard it truly is to play this song. You did amazing
Ive seen and done this song on a five piece. How the hell many heads is that? I mean good job and all but jeez
Good job dude. Great tune.
You are smashing it, flawless! What a cool set up too.
this was unfathomably brilliant
John are you alive
