- The annual Rock Fest in Cadott, Wisconsin has traditionally held a "no moshing" policy at their event, even though they book rock and metal bands. This year, however, they've decided to try out "designated moshing zones", but still banning certain styles of moshing. Buckle up and be ready for some laughs, cause this one is hilariously wild.

When I go to a metal show, I expect people to mosh; I don't partake myself anymore, I'm heading towards 50, and my body hurts just thinking about being in the pit, but I would never begrudge anyone else the opportunity to mosh; I loved it in my younger days.
I'm over 50 yrs old lady and found myself in a pit last summer on a metal festival 😂
It was fun af and I really felt it a couple of days after....
Im 22 and when I went to see Napalm Death with Escuela Grind in Barcelona the pits were some of the hardests Ive ever seen. When Escuela finished I got out of the super crowded interior of the venue and puked right at the entrance. Then I immediately headed inside to see Napalm. At various moments I had to get out of the pits bc I felt like I was choking but it felt so cathartic to give my all on there that the overall experience was really beautiful.

Tons of Rock in Oslo, Norway had a "soft" ban on moshing last summer. Architects almost got kicked off stage for trying to start one... At the same time, the festival uses moshing imagery in their promotional images... 🙃
I attended Tons of Rock last year, remember well when the vocalist of Kvelertak said that he had gotten instructions to calm the crowd, otherwise they would have to stop the show. How does the organizers expect the crowd to stay calm during the last performance of the entire festival...? Especially when its one of the nation biggest rock bands that is headlining
@@IPlayXZtyle That sucks. Never been to a Kvelertak live show myself, but knowing their music I can't imagine a still standing / calm crowd just listening and doing nothing. What is the official reasoning for why Tons of Rock does this? I'm assuming they just don't want to deal with the risk of some people potentially sustaining injuries?
At the main stage there was mosh pit multiple times and that did not get stopped, but at the architects it got stopped multiple times 🤦🏻♀️
When bury tommorow played in the tent stage they ran multiple circlepits, wich kicked up alot of dust in the tent, but as far as i know nobody told them anything. Architects was outside so idk

One time at wacken, Jfac got cut short because they called for a wall of death. While some guy with a mic explained why they did that, the crowd formed one of the biggest wall of death I've ever seen.
If im not mistaken, that was during the time when the Loveparade festival incident happened in germany. I assume the organizers probably felt pressured

I remember they tried to inforce “no wall of deaths and no circle pits” at Wacken in 2010. First day. First band -> Job for a Cowboy. That rule was literally “overrun” at song number 2! 😂 #entombedofamachine

Ya, but that was Wacken, think about the crowd. This festival sounds like it some bumduck Wisconsin festival. No offense to that area or the people that are gonna be there, but I got a feeling the crowd isn't gonna be on the same level as the Wacken crowd.
I was at the Kublain Khan show here in Denver this week. In the middle of the moshpit I hit this guy and he pushed me with both hands in the chest. Me, 6'3 and 250 pounds, flew backwards and fell on my back in the middle of the mosh. People immediately picked me up, I ran towards the guy who pushed me... I hugged him, we shouted fuck yeah... and we went back to the circle. Moshpit life.
Never have I been physically upended and ejected from my feet and smiled like a child, except in a mosh pit.

@@psychodboy1511 since they are impacting me with their way of having fun, I think I also have a say in it. I paid to see the band, not to lift people all night long. A lot of crowdsurfers also have zero common sense. While a fit/thin person, about 50-60kg, wearing sneakers and staying stiff as a board is still okay, those typical fat blokes with their steel-toed boats who hang in there like a sack of potatoes should just stay on the ground.

Rockfest regular since 2017 here!
We've grown to a group of 15+ of us in our camp that attend yearly.
The no moshing rule got RIDICULOUS last year. Its been going on for years. Move a little too much? Like, literally jump or sway too much and you'd get security strobe lights on you and security would break it up and/or escort you out. People were getting flashed during Jinjer last year at the Who's On Top stage. WE WANTED TO MOVE. No crowd surfing. No people on shoulders. No climbing on things. (Except the giant chair you can fall and break your back trying to get on. And some hay bails around the ground.)
The main stage pit is a "pit pass" area where you pay for a pass per artist, and there are limited quantities, where there are benches, and it's concrete. No moshing. Lawn and camping chairs are allowed in the surrounding lawn area and VIP area.
There is a hefty amount of security, as well as the local PD. (The sheriff actually accidently PLOWED straight into me and my friend after we stopped and stooped down to fix a glowstick on my leg and was super cool and apologetic about it).
There is literally no shade in the concert grounds unless you're in the rich people loft, so we would love more shade on the grounds.
Rockfest is probably by far the CHEAPEST festival in the states and has 7,500 campsites. If you get your wristbands and sites early, you're looking at $110 per wristband, and same per site (no utilities) and $30 for a camp pass. The grounds are pretty well maintained.
Most people, and the vibe, are awesome. We just wanna mosh again.

I was up there for jinjer too. It was insane to see the way security dealt with the fans throwing and pushing people down. Me and a bunch of other people told stories similar to this on their instagram and they deleted the comments
@esavage8855 so many people were so excited for Jinjer too! Especially after they had to back out of the Knotfest Roadshow. I wanted to see Ice Nine Kills closer up, but the weather was getting dicey too, and there was no way I was getting stuck outside in the absolute monsoon that ensued and having to skip Jinjer. And then security was kicking people out for wiggling a little too much,. C'mon.

Me and my brother had pit passes for Gideon on the main stage and we tried starting mosh pits numerous times because the vocalist KEPT CALLING FOR THEM so of course we’re going to do it! The one guard shoved my brother into the guardrail and forced his way into stop us.
Plus I also got put into a bear hug during The Ghost Inside.

I’m going to rockfest so I’ll take a bunch of pictures and videos for you. The way they have it set up is there’s a very very small standing area right up against the stage then there’s a vip area with wooden benches then behind that there’s a roped off area with lawn chairs then it’s GA. They used to get tons of pits off to the right hand side of the stage because you could get close and they had room over there. Then they added this huge corporate structure that’s elevated blocks the view and has tons of poles so people wouldn’t gather there. They still get some pits behind the VIP lawn area but to be honest most people there are just chilling in lawn chairs. It’s an older more conservative crowd. As for the side stages they have shit tons of security that will flood the area and rough up the fans. Last year I saw Jinjer up there and security was shoving/throwing people to the ground and throwing people against the edge of the pit. It was ridiculous! As for crowd surfing at the side stages if they’re close enough they will drag the person off the crowd and kick them out if (throughout all the shows there’s tons of security standing throughout the crowd) At the main stage you wouldn’t want to because you’re just going to get dropped into the VIP area 6 feet below 😂 and the standing area is so small it you’d move like 10 feet and get kicked out. Me and a bunch of other people posted stories on their instagram of security roughing up fans in the past and they deleted all of the comments
Sounds horrible. I'm not against seating or separated areas (they're great for everyone who doesn't want to, or can't, stand / mosh / etc), but that setup just sounds like they want to extract maximum amount of money out of their customers.
Meanwhile there's other festivals where the security is either bouncing along to the bands, or busy getting all the crowd surfers savely into the trench in front of the stage. It's quite a sight to see a single dude pick a 120kg guy right from the crowd and just put him back on the ground - to turn around and do it again. And again.
Iirc, during Electric Callboys ~70 Minute show at Summer Breeze in 2022, they counted around 1600 surfers.

@@Garagantua for sure! Always love it when security gets into it! Those guys have always impressed me especially at large festivals. There’s a venue about an hour away from my house and security there is awesome! Last time I was there some of the security guys were giving fist bumps and saying let’s go after you got done crowd surfing
My band played the main stage rock fest 3 years ago. (Störmbreaker).
After we played our set, we went out to the crowd to hang with fans and mingle. The problem with moshing here is that they have concrete in the pit area. If they threw down a few slabs of rubber it would be fine. But it’s also a very family-type vibe festival. When Korn went on it wasn’t very lit. More of a chill and relax and have some beers and watch type festival, not saying it’s a good or bad thing, just how it’s been historically.

I've been going to Rockfest yearly for over a decade now. It's really not a "moshing" festival in how it's set up. I know some people don't like that, but I enjoy how chill the environment is. Especially now that I'm in my mid 30s and don't have the lower back to jump around for hours on end. Lot of lawn chairs and beer. Usually not metal bands. Heck when it first started, the last day was devoted to classic rock! I kind of miss that.... Anyhow, living in WI/MN, this fest is generally one of the only spots I'll get to see some of these bands affordably, without having to drive 3+ hours. So it means a lot to me. I've never had any real bad experiences there, other than rainstorms.
How does moshing threaten your experience? Why do others have to NOT enjoy their experience so you can enjoy yours?
If you want to sit in a lawn chair and sip Coors through a Parkway set, first of all wtf are you doing? But beyond that, who is stopping you? How does a pit affect your enjoyment of a show in any way?

I love the kiddos in here gatekeeping your experience. BTW I'm 40 and I do a little jumping around but my moshing days are behind me so I pony up the money for the VIP area at rockfest anyway.
When Jinjer played Charlotte with Breaking Benjamin, security was pulling people out of the crowd left and right for pogo dancing. Can't imagine what they would have done if people had started moshing. Friends of mine left within 10 minutes of the show starting. Jinjer didn't even post videos from the show, which is weird because Jinjer usually posts at least a few pics on their separate social media accounts if not on the band account. They are a band that are VERY proud of what they do and they take a lot of footage and pictures of all their shows.
A Festival called Bråvalla in Sweden had in front of one stage a "pen" where you could mosh. It was only accessible from the sides. So people hanging on the fence in the front was protected from the moshpit. It was a mix festival with both pop and Metal band playing at the festival. But bands that played on the stage that year was Rammstein, Amon Amarth, Tenacious D, Nightwish, Bring me the Horizon, etc. Note that moshing on a mix festival is dangerous, all the kids that don't usually mosh thinking you just go in an wave at other people. 😅
In Finland there are separate drinking / smoking / under 18 areas. Add moshing / crowdsurfing / safe space / sustainability areas to that and we can segment the crowd in their little play pins.
Hi Tank, have you heard of the German metal band "Heavysaurus"?
The project "Hevisaurus" was started in 2009 by Thunderstone drummer Mirka Rantanen, who wanted to make heavy metal music for kids.
Sony Music made it an international project, so "Heavysaurus" was started in Germany in 2017. The band members are dressed as 4 dinosaurs and 1 dragon. They create their own songs and also some cover songs.
At live events, the area right in front of the stage is "kids only", parents have to stay further away... we have seen them last year and we will visit another concert this year. My daughters (4yo and 8yo) really love it and I like these songs much more than the "standard children's songs".
I am pretty sure you will like songs like "Rarr", "Yeah Heavysaurus", "Dinos wollen euch tanzen sehen" (a cover of "rock you like a hurricane") and their latest song "Pommesgabel" (which means "fries fork", I guess you call it "sign of the horn"🤘)

My friends and I go to RF every year. They’ve always been a “no moshing” festival, even at the smaller stages, which have flat ground in the crowd area. They’re adding a “designated moshing zone” at one of their small side stages as a trial run.
Also was there for Ronnie’s meltdown last year. He showed up late for his set time, played like 5 songs (which were great, btw) and then screamed at the crowd and left early. Maybe 25 minutes total. Classic Ronnie. My friends and I laughed.
No anti moshing policy here in sweden.
Regarding Hardcore dancing and people doing dangerious stage dives: Saw Terror in Stockholm the other week, nuff' said. 75% of the people only dared to enter half of the venue floor because of how hardcore dancing, brutal moshing and stage dives there where. It was legendary. Only one guard in the house watching from the balcony, he was a real buff guy but the crowd was buffer, psycho and tatted up.

A festival in the Uk had a specific zone at the front, to enter the zone you needed to sign a disclaimer and get a wristband, no wristband, no front. It was a mixed hip hop / hardcore no barrier festival
From the area, have unfortunately been to Rock Fest only because I was able to get some free pit passes. The amount of vendors they used to have each year have been cut in half and everything is insanely overpriced. EVERY single year it’s either deathly hot outside (it’s nowhere near a lake around here) or it storms horribly- more often than not it’s a lovely mix of both.
The last time I went, Cadott was hit with a bad storm. Half the bands had to cancel. People hid in their tents and RVs. Our tent literally blew away lmfao. All of the porta-potties had been knocked over by the wind. People’s tents were literally flying into fences on the grounds and some campers had to go “find” their tents 😅 it’s funny now but it was so stressful when it happened. We actually just said screw it and drove home that night lol. I honestly think the only upside to going was that we had pit tickets for Manson and that was super cool. Everything else was for the birds and I will NEVER go again 😅 also the lineup gets worse and worse each year.
Also, yes, Ronnie was right. It’s literally a boomer gathering, everyone sits on lawn chairs, there’s barely any movement in the crowds. The campsites can get kinda wild but the shows themselves are meh. They have the same loyal fans that get the same campsites each year and go hang with their friends for a weekend. Honestly though.. Save your coins on this one.

I don't know anything about moshing culture either, but I love your reactions to the terminology in the article.
So, I take it your off to Japan in May for the rock fest, BABYMETAL, ELECTRIC CALLBOY, POLYPHIA, just to name a few that I saw listed on their concert web site. Japan's Saitama super arena is a cool venue for sure to see a show, should be lots of fun, enjoy.
I've never been to RockFest, but as a Wisconsinite I find this whole thing hilarious as well, and you did pronounce Cadott correctly. Also a cowpen for the moshers would be a super Wisconsin thing lol.
Just go to Milwaukee Metal Fest and see Belushi Speed Ball. That band puts on amazing shows. They're like Gwar for Gen Z.
As a 24 year veteran of rock fest in cadott with three huge stages there hasn't been a mosh pit ever at fest it was just a matter of time before it was gonna happen but it wasn't until Ronnie complained on how boring we were even though he was playing the coldest and most rained out day at fest, my buddy played in a beer stage to a packed house right after falling in reverse and I'll be damned if we weren't headbanging all night long but no moshing please look up this festival on CZcams it's an amazing time with very little rules compared to others
Been going to Rockfest in Cadott for about 10 years. They have never allowed moshing of any type and STRICTLY enforce it. They have security in the crowd and will quickly break up any mosh pits that start, and WILl kick you out if you’re caught multiple times.
Of course sometimes mosh pits that are big enough do occasionally occur and there’s nothing they can do but usually they’re squashed before they can get to that point. When Bad Wolves played there about 5-6 years ago, they had an absolute death grip on the crowd. They set up a HUGE wall of death and i remember there being like 5 security guards stranding directly in the middle of this huge wall of death about to occur as if they were going to stop it. The wall of death led into a huge mosh pit, and i remember the security guards getting tossed around lile rag dolls 😂. Thats one of my favorite moments ever at rock fest in all my years going.

This is just freakin funny. Flaying moshing?!! Lmao. Reminds me of some old school Anthrax/ Suicidal Tendencies moshing. Which was A LOT of ummm Flaying lol. And Tank you mentioned Cheap Trick in your list of old-timers. Those guys don't have "Mosh Pits" going on. But when I saw em back in 03. The crowd got pretty hectic. Surprised the hell out of me. I love and grew up on Cheap Trick. But damn it was gettin close to a full blown pit erupting. But no Flaying would be happening I'm sure. I went to WI Rock Fest two years ago and while it was better than the previous years experience at Rocklahoma, the lawn chairs everywhere are pretty annoying and the micro-transactions they turned everything into pissed me off. You had to pay extra to stand at the barrier for each band you wanted to do that for. Didn't matter if you were GA, VIP or SUPeR MeGA VIP. Plus, their second stage was too small for the acts they had playing on it and the soundcheck would interfere with the main stage. We are honestly completely put off of festivals now.

I do agree that they could use a more suitable "2nd Main Stage" other than the Who's on Top. It gets way over crowded way too fast. But that would be an entire infrastructure change as well. They've kind of outgrown themselves a little bit over time. They did wildly improve that stage though. (Idk what it was about its previous setup, but the sound of it years ago literally made me sick.)
I actually like the layout over at Somerset. Just not the camping and parking nightmare.

Honestly, from what I've heard insurance is fucking a lot of them. That, and with social media any problem now snowballs out of control and the venue almost always gets blamed (usually rightfully so too), and they just don't want to deal with it.

I went to a Children of Bodom gig back in the day where they had a "mosh area" set up. Was basically just a barrier set up that split the crowd front to back, front was for moshing back wasn't. Annoying part was it was ticketed that way too so when the mosh section sold out you had to buy in the non-mosh and hope to god you could jump the barrier and get past the security.

I remember the House of Blues in Anaheim, CA (not there anymore) kept playing announcements that "absolutely no moshing allowed". What's weird is they didn't enforce it at all lol

I'm all about people enjoying a show the way they want, but I wish "hardcore dancers," would be less reckless. I got a black eye at a show because some clown decided he should have the authority to decide where the moshpit should be and decided to start flailing his fists around without warning and clocked me in the face. After the show it took some convincing for him to be apologetic, trying to tell me, "it's just a part of the fun." If your idea of fun is getting punched in the face, fine, but I go to shows to watch musicians doing insane shit with their instruments, and having the guy standing in front of me spontaneously start blindly throwing hands isn't fun.
I had to yell at my band's audience (Not like yell angrily, yell as in, "Say it calmly into a microphone") to watch out for each other in the pit at our most recent show. It was the first actual circle pit/mosh pit that I've seen at one of our shows, and it was awesome to see. (I'm of the opinion that if people are moshing to it and snobby music critics either hate it or ignore it, it's probably good, musically speaking.) That being said, a common saying in the hardcore scene when I was younger was "No Karate In The Pit!" because people kept getting spin-kicked in the face when they were trying to circle pit. Several of my friends got broken noses, chipped teeth, broken glasses, etc. in mosh pits back in the day, and there's a real grey zone of responsibility there at times. None of us ever blamed the venues or the bands, and mostly we didn't even necessarily blame the person who physically hit the guy who got hit, because it's basically hockey etiquette in the pit. That being said, "hardcore dancing" and a circle pit are two very different things. (And needless to say, any *intentional* injury in the pit was met with the violent person being 86'd immediately.)
It might actually be interesting from a staging/engineering standpoint to try and intentionally design an ideal mosh zone. I mean, we make adjustments for other types of audience consideration, why not design an easy to clean and maintain area specifically for moshing that's nearly impossible to get actually injured in? We could use space-age polymer flexible rubber, inflated by powerful wind intakes and air compression, where it would be completely safe to slam into other people and/or the walls and floor, and god damn it, I just described a large, adult jumping castle. Fuck!
I was at this show last year… Ronnie had a point, security was up everyone’s asses who tried to do anything beyond dancing, and people absolutely did try moshing, and those people were absolutely kicked out. This area is absolutely the most small town, elderly energy I’ve ever seen. There really isn’t a metal scene here which doesn’t help with the people in charge of this festivals decisions to prevent moshing… it was to grant the wish of the general public which averages ages 50+ if I had to guess

Last year was pretty ridiculous. Most people we've met though know they're too old to be in a pit and they do their thing, and others are petty princesses. MOST of us just want to be treated like we're smart enough to make our own decisions. And we've now lost 2 rock/metal festivals in the area. RIP to Northern. I never went to Rock USA (same weekend as Rockfest 1 hour away, same lineup, different days), but Rockfest is now carrying 2 other festivals on its back. Idk the first thing about how to start a festival, but some yahoos keep doing a big ass country festival in bumfuck Minnesota so.. why not a rock one...?
I agree, crazy how many old fat guys show up every year just to drink 20 beers and complain about moshing. I can’t stand rockfest. I’ve been kicked out 3 times lol

Im from Wisconsin, and I've been to rockfest. We saw Atreyu, In This Moment, All That Remains, Bullet For My Valentine, Five Finger Death Punch, and Slipknot. There were plenty of pits, and they did nothing to stop them.
I was with a band at Cadott in 2022 and my singer said to me right before the set " when do they let people down?" because yes there is an area right in from all the way to FOH that is a VIP area and we played at like 3 pm and it was not very full. This band would have had a pit on 99% of the other shows they play. if memory serves me right it had chairs

Filmed a lesser known German Metal band about 15 years ago. Tiny venue, had my own little stage for the cam, right next to the bar. We only had 3 songs to record spread across the entire set. I had a pretty great time, whenever a banger came up :)
I was told this wasn't very professional, but the band found it pretty funny. Got to hang out backstage, pick up a guitar, learn a riff .. fun times.

Went to a bar show over a decade ago. Nonpoint and Drowning Pool. Place said no moshing. My buddy and I were just jumping in place when I noticed my friend stop. Giant security guy had him, mid hop. Sets him down and says we're out if he sees it again. Dope show, whack venue.
So I know this because the singer tweeted about this but pop punk band Loveless played in a non moshpit show and people did indeed start a rowpit instead. So yes rowpits are allowed in a venue that doesn't allow moshing. I think I actually went to a venue that didn't allow moshing and the band asked for moshpits and a wall of death anyways. It is still my dream to join a rowpit but the only show i've been to where there was a rowpit near me, I didn't know wtf a rowpit was and was super confused to see people rowing behind me.
What inspired the head shave?
Modern day moshing is NOTHING like we did it in the 80/90's. Today everyone throws their arms and legs up in the air and people can and will catch punches and kicks.
We all kept our arms down and helped out whenever someone fell down. The purpose is to have a good time and not get hurt.
I remember Wacken 2010, they tried to enforce "no wall of death". I never participated in more of them on one festival... And they unplugged Job for a Cowboy in the middle of the show (and a song as well), because they encouraged the crowd to do a wall of death. So, in the end JfaC did not finish their set, but overall there the crowds did whatever they wanted to do...
Crowd killers are the worst. Can't say I blame them.

I went to Rock Fest a few years ago. They usually have the heavier bands play earlier in the day and the more radio friendly bands play in the evening. Most of their headliners are more established musicians with a typically older audience. My guess is that the smaller stages where most of the metal bands play won't have as much "mosh policing" as the larger stages. Since it's a metal and hard rock combination festival they probably had rock fans complain.

The one silver lining to all of this is that people can mosh to Psychostick, but if you're watching a Psychostick set and not moshing that's messed up.

You know what: I was at Rock am Ring 1998 and 1999, back then I was 20 and 21, and even back then I didn’t want to mosh or even got involved in such a crowd. 🥴

I'm from Wisconsin and my experience going to Rock fest was the lineup was great, the bands were awesome, and I learned pretty quickly not to mosh. The way they seem to try to regulate it is that security would usually come up and stop you by pulling you away from the pit area, and holding you back untill you stopped moshing. I watched it happen a few times .
Also, yes it was a challenge not to mosh with the lineup they had last year when I went. I still don't know how to feel about having seen Slipknot and not been able to mosh 😂
I think that would be an awesome culture change/precedent. Like a right of passage at a metal show is going into the thunder dome. Like, you wear your moshing waiver as a badge of honor. Like instead of just telling fish tales of when you were in the pit, you have paper/photo evidence. If I had a venue, I'd have a moshing area (bounce house/cattle style) where you had to sign a waiver, and you could buy a t shirt that says: "I survived the PIT at Jonny's Metal Fest".

I remember going to metal shows at amphitheaters where close to half the crowd were in seats all the way up to the stage and the only moshing would be way back on the general admission lawn (this was long before a lot of venues began to remove seats for “pit seating”) anyways, I recall seeing Pantera once where people up front somehow were able to remove the rows of seating up front and began to pass them over the crowd and barricade for security to catch like a a bunch crowd surfers. They didn’t fucking stop the show, they just kept fucking going and fuck yeah there was a mosh pit once the area was cleared. If that happened now it would probably be all over the news / social media but at time it was just something that happened at a metal show lol.
Ive been going to RF since the early 00s. Its always been this way and originally never had heavy acts. Butt rock early on and now they have expanded. They are also one of the longest running festivals in the country. There was also legalities involved with no moshing. There is a pit area infront of the stage with walk outs going through it. Then there is a huge seated vip area. You should get ahold of Wade the guy who runs it. He is pretty rad.

They might just do what they do at Everwise Amphitheater in Indy and Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville (Both in Indiana). These are like the only decent outside venues in Indiana, they’re heavily seated upfront and then a lot of lawn in the back for GA. Most moshing is in the lawn, but they sometimes remove the center seat section infront of the stage, literally put metal barricades around that area, and that’s where we mosh for heavy bands at those venues lol
In 2021 I was at Upheaval Festival in Grand Rapids Michigan. They had screens saying "no moshing". I don't care to mosh but it exists at metal shows. There was security in the GA looking for people moshing. They had Rob Zombie one night Korn the next. Plus other metal bands. I think some started but they were small.
I went to a Flogging Molly and Face to Face show at a Native American casino in SoCal and tribal police were the security and they had a no moshing rule as well.
It was under a big tent, like the super churches in those areas that used to be rural areas all the conservative people who can't stand the suburbs anymore flee to. If you've done road travel for vacation etc regularly, you know what I'm talking about. The areas that have tract housing in fields next to dilapidated barns and trailers, no public parks, and only businesses are large chains, no local owned businesses.
Anyway, I digress, there were folding chairs all locked together with a small open section for standing, I guess. During Face to Face I tried to start a circle pit and tribal police grabbed me, I was polite hands up and just kinda started skip jumping away, idk if they wanted to throw me out or not, but I did a circle around and went back to my seat where my gf was.
went ahead and checked the full lineup for this and it's really funny because I think the only acts on their ENTIRE THING that would incite anywhere CLOSE to the level of moshing they want are Parkway Drive and Beartooth and UABB, which I think are all on the same day as the cherry on top

Been to rockfest. its just a big field with a vip area up front. everyone brings lawn chairs and just hangs out by them. so people are more spaced out. i didnt see any moshing when i went

Inkcarceration (mansfield, OH) posts no moshing and no crowd surfing signs on the side stage (stage 2). Yea, it wasnt enforced, especially for Slaughter to Prevail, Mushroomhead etc... in 2021 Attila had the craziest circle pit, all the way around the sound booth (no center guard rails)

I went to rock fest in 2021 and all the way back then they still had no moshing rules. that festival is very much a sit-in-a-lawn-chair-drinking-beer type of thing
I've done metal shows without moshing. It's a bit weird initially, but totally fine and you get to actually watch the freakin bands without worrying about getting kicked in the head or anything like that. ProgPowerUSA in Atlanta. 3 days, 15 bands, seated theater venue... and you had bands like Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Firewind, Mercenary, Pyramaze, Symphony X, Blind Guardian... etc. It was fine without a pit.
I go to shiprocked, they had Killswitch, Beartooth, from ashes to new, Parkway Drive, and Falling in reverse over the last couple years. No moshing allowed on the ship. It doesn't seem to be a big deal and no one starts a pit.
Back in 2017 I went to Rockfest.
Atreyu was on stage and during Ex’s and Oh’s their bass player decided to walk off the stage and while playing the song (pretty rad from my memory) I was locked in on the stage and before I knew it their bass player was behind me tapping my shoulder telling me to start a circle pit around him.
Me and a bunch of random dudes started the pit and then in a matter of seconds, security showed up and told us to “break it up or they’re kicking our asses out.”
They also stopped a bunch of other moshers during Slipknot who was headlining. Goofiest shit ever.
