I think that when you buy the extension you need a certain amount of wood. Like for example, I think for the kitchen it's 450 pieces of wood. Also, to get wood you need to hit stumps 6 times. But this is just an hypothesis so it might not be correct.
Crystal2862 is right, the '____ piece' is just the amount of wood you need. You can check how much wood you have somewhere on the side of your chicken coop, I believe. You really want to go to the top of the mountain and chop those stumps every day, they might not always be there.
