BREAK IN! Vanlife Nightmare (van attacked with us INSIDE)

- Not again!! Thieves try to break in to our van, whilst we are inside. Usually this would spook a criminal, but these guys did not care and would not stop. Before this happened we were enjoying a wonderful time in Greece. We spent some time in Meteora enjoying Greek history, wondrous nature and some bitter cold weather. Greece has been fantastic so far, and I know this unfortunate event is not a reflection of this country or it's people.
In future we will be more vigilant and not arrive at park ups in the dark so we can make our own analysis of how dodgy a place feels.

We are Philly and Keely and we live full time in our tiny home on wheels Martha. After building our DIY home in a Citroen Relay camper we spent a year living on the streets of London before quitting our jobs only to be met with lockdown. Then we took our van further than she had ever been before to the very beautiful Turkey. Enroute we stopped off in Spain for a few weeks where we experienced every van lifers worst nightmare, we were robbed and they stole all valuables in our van. But now we are back on our feet, fully MOT’d and back on the road through Europe before we experienced another vanlife nightmare... our van caught fire! After the trauma of that we had a massive change of plan and have now made our way to Japan. We are starting a Japanese road trip and excited to bring you all along.

Fit sensor cameras for the outside of the van, sensor/manual spot lights, a loud alarm/series of alarms that you can set off, bear spray, baseball bat.
Yeah we were thinking big blinding lights and big deafening alarm. Definitely being added when we get back 💪💪
Glad your both safe. The Greek people are so nice. There is a high probability that they were migrants trying to break into you van. I'm not trying to make a political statement or be unkind to any race. So I would say, try parking with a couple of other vans were possible for safety. Chat to the other people vans. Agree to look out for each other. Stay safe.

We have been at this spot for over a week for about 1 month ago. We had no problem (we parked downstream, not above the refugee centrum). What did amaze me was that so many people leave their vans completely open and out of sight with all values out in the open...
There is a certain person there, a shepherd that comes every single day, and sometimes during the night. He does this for many years already (Rust to roadtrip also had troubles with him). He is begging for money and he will try door handles like it is nothing...
Normally there are always quite some vans around there but we were a few nights alone too but didn't have any problem.
If I were you, I would go back, in the morning, enjoy the river. Park closeby (you can park within 2m or something) so you can have an eye out.
Yeah our friends had no problems at all when they were there last month. However we got a message on IG from someone else saying they went there yesterday and apparently someone was broken into the night after us, had their window smashed, and then last night someone had stuff stolen from van while they were in hotspring. So seems like someone is on a bit of a rampage these last few days. We would NEVER leave our van open even in sight 🤣🤣 the paranoia is real after bad experiences haha.

Greece and Bulgaria seem to have issues with harassing campers. Maybe it depends on the area of the country. Their aggressiveness would be how violent drug addicts would act. My instinct would be to fight, but not wise to step out. You handled it perfectly.

Philly and Keely. To prevent break ins when I’m in my camper I have 3 dogs that have terrifying growls. They leave pretty quickly.

Scary! Stay safe, you did the right thing. We took our van to Meteora last summer and love it too! No wild camping allowed in the area then, so that’s one advantage of going off season!
Yeah it was pretty quiet when we were there only two other vans in the whole area so noone seemed to mind ❤️

My favourite parts of Greece and Turkey was learning all of the history of where we were. Coming from a relatively new country, New Zealand, it's quite hard to comprehend.

Thanks so much 🥰🥰🥰 someone in the comments gave us great advice to buy wasp nest spray. Apparently it shoots like 20ft and will incapacitate them immediately if sprayed in their face. A big air horn to deafen them and a light to blind them 💪💪 I'm sure you wont encounter it, I think we are just super unlucky when it comes to stuff like this. A man i know here from Norway was in Spain last summer with a camper van. He wake up in the middle of the night from the sound of someone try to break in to his car. He is a big man and can take care of him self if he get in trouble normally so he do like you do and tell them to go away. They dont bother him inside the camper van and keep trying to get the door open. Outside it was 2 men and they both had iron bars in their hands When they get the door open they attack him with the iron bars to he be unconscious. He wake up on hospital 3 weeks later after been in coma since the attack. Half his face was smashed in, his jaw was broken, his teeth were knocked out, a hole in his head, a broken arm, broken ribs +++. It is not easy to defend yourselves against such people and when they know there is people in the van and they have with them iron bars, they dont botter if they hurt anyone. You two was very lucky it go so well and dont be hurt. Hope you never have to experience this again

@@phillyandkeely He is home and almost good now bit you still se that his one side of the face are smashed and he have no teeth on one side of his mouth. And he have another sound when he speak. But he still have some hospital treatment before he be all good again. He was very lucky because he could be dead because of this.

Amazing scenery! I have been to Greece but in the Spring. It was hot in May. I am so sorry that someone felt they had to try to steal from you. You handled it well. I’m so sorry to hear about the break in. Can I suggest you get someone to do an energy clearing on your van. It would make good viewing content at the extremes you would go to to get over this but it will also work.

They weren’t locals, my cousin has lived in Greece for a long time & says that it foreigners of Greece from all different countries that do this & that you need to report it to the local police!

Greek history is just incredible to think the monks built these mind blowing monasteries what a death defying feat of will power, strength & tenacity!! Overnight in Van with no dog, you need several dogs barking together on autoplay recording or one big snarly Lion roar cat. Then have international sticker placed on van, "Beware of dogs". Outside Spot lights help yes, but something loud to scare attackers away. I Feel for you both,, being alone in a strange land. I won't spend time (my travel history)as a tourist hitchhiking through Greece, and no support from the local authorities. Keep yourselves safe.

The first time I did travel years ago, I had two medium size dogs, once whilst looking out the window, a man seemed to be coming straight for my van...my two dogs barked ferociously and he darted away. But it still left me shook. Now I am beginning another long adventure in a Toyota Sienna with no dogs (They passed during covid)and I have to say it is a different kind of travel. I have a walking stick that has a taser on the end and I periodically practice. It is right next to me for quick access. The FIRST action will be to drive away. Your action was the best choice. Also, such amazing footage you shared with us. Really enjoyed that.
Yeah I think driving away is always the best choice if possible. Sorry to hear about your dogs passing, hopefully no need implement any of your safety measures, but it's good to have some just incase
