- The key quilting skills for a great quilt block are accurate cutting, straight sewing and a good ironing technique. In this video it's all about the ironing. I'll show you how to iron a quilt block for the best results. With better piecing, your seams will begin to nest and your points line up. If you are a beginner quilter, you might be struggling with sewing small or wonky blocks. Following these three steps and you might find that you are a beginner no more.

Your demonstration using the woven paper was very effective, thank you! I’ve tried to always set my seams and press with the iron (not always successful with the press) but hadn’t known about the finger press in-between. I’m encouraged this will help me reduce the possibility of ‘wonky’ blocks. 😊

I've always pressed my seams every which way. This is a game changer! It's been 30+ years sewing on my own.. basic squares into quilts and holiday crafts. Thank you for describing your ironing technique so clearly. Many videos assume the viewer knows, well, anything! Haha. I can’t tell you how many wonky blocks I’ve made. It's worth the extra step
You make me want to be a better quilter. Not that I'm actually a "Quilter" like you, but as I'm finally beginning to make the time and investment into my life long dream, I just want to be really good at it. I lost my house October 8, 2017 in the northern California fires and am still living in my RV. Not only do I have a "sewing area", I also teach private music lessons (guitar, ukulele, banjo, voice, and piano) in my RV :-) And yes, I have a piano in here too. My point is this: I am so serious about learning this beautiful craft that I have discarded other 'things' to make room for what's most important, quilting and music :-) I'm planning to do as you said in another video "Start small and simple", so I started with a table runner and placemats, and a quilt for my granddaughters 18th birthday. I want to be good at this so I can give other fire victims a beautiful quilt. Everything now is brand new and store bought as all the old stuff, including snuggly blankets, were destroyed. I've only made 2 quilts in my entire life, and that was almost 20 years ago, (I'm 61) but I'm getting started again, and I'm so excited, and hope to make LOTS of beautiful things :-)

Just watched this last night and applied this concept to the log cabin quilt I’m making. My second quilt ever. The final squares were getting smaller and not square. You are right, this ironing method has made a huge difference! They are supposed to be 18 inches finished and I’m not quite there but this technique has made a 1/4 to 1/2 inch difference!!! Thank you!!!!

Oh my! I see why we must not swish! When you opened that final square- the blue and red one- I instinctively felt my mind telling my hand to use the edge of the iron to push the seam open and flat! Wow. This is eye-opening for me.

Finally! Something on pressing that makes sense. I have wracked my brains trying to figure out why my blocks were so off. I have obsessed over the measuring and cutting. Then I've sewn, picked, and re-sewn my blocks only to have them distorted and out of whack. I think I this is the answer to my problem. I iron like a man! A real man! That means 500° and smoking and scorching fabric. LOL! I'm excited to try this because I was getting discouraged.

Hi there - clearly I'm late to the game, but I found you this morning through your "Ugly Fabrics" video, and now I'm here, and next I'll be popping over to the diy ironing board... and productivity just came to a screeching halt!! I really enjoyed this video - so clever, the way you change locations and keep it interesting. It's during COVID-19, and I'm trying to figure out how to keep my Grade 1/2 students engaged in this remote learning thing. Not only have you inspired me to try that "ugly fabric" quilt, but I'm also going to try some of your setting change techniques with my lessons! Oh my gosh! I'm new. Starting my first HST quilt ever to thank my mother in law for helping me learn to quilt. I'm more nervous than I was before, but armed with more helpful knowledge!! I was pretty excited that I got through cutting blocks from fabric!! Today I'm stitching. Thank you for these very clear, easy to understand examples. I have been quilting for 10 years and your ironing hacks have been a complete game changer for me! I have watched tons of videos on the 1/4" seam allowance, and cutting, but not ironing. I'm working on a difficult pattern with half rectangle triangles, where the points and angles matter a ton! If it wasn't for the ironing techniques I would be tearing my hair out. Thank you a ton!

I watched this video and did a serious head shake and are you serious.. this is what I've been doing wrong. I had all the problems she went over as a beginner and thank goodness I saw this as I am starting a quilt for my son. Oh my word "Lightbulb moment"! That is now taken in. Yaay! If you can, will you please address the use of stiffeners on the fabric and ironing. I generally like to starch but good especially if I am going to embroider. I want crisp edges and keeping the fabric's fibers motionless and in place. Oh, I hope you can speak to that for us. Thanks for enhancing my sewing life!
Faery Fox:: I just was reading your comment & wanted to share that I usually starch my fabrics after washing them, before rotary cutting. But if U do starch, do NOT use steam, steam stretches the fabric fibers, which defeats the purpose of starching, if U follow...I’m with U, love the crispness of the starched fabric & it’s much easier to cut & sew if it’s been starched & ironed properly! Also, when I iron the starched fabric before cutting, I don’t iron the fabric like it is clothing, I iron in one direction (usually from the top of the board towards me) & no ‘swishing’ the iron, keep it straight & smooth in nice long sweeps... Lastly, if U do use starch, spray on fabric & let it “settle” into the fabric a few seconds, otherwise it will get all over your iron plate & make a mess, it needs to ‘soak’ into the fabric, U will see what I mean-if U haven’t noticed previously! HTH’s 😊👍❗️❗️

I shall remember this technique when pressing my blocks and I have many which I have to press which has been cut out and just boxed up by my grandmother many years ago. Since my mother was not into quilting she didn't use the fabric it was stored away and I ended up with it along with her sewing machine which I have to put back in use before I am too old to do anything with any of it. Thanks so much for the information on pressing the pattern blocks and making sure the blocks are straight like I want them to be.

I have been sewing for 50 yrs my mother in law was German and Russian and I learned a lot about sewing from her and quilting and she hand pressed her seams when quilting and she also hand quilted her quilts but you have given me some really great time saving ideas while sewing thank you for sharing and I am so glad that I have found you and PS I really love the clothes line rope baskets trays and bags ....I thought of a great idea for in the trunk of cars or back of SUV’s making square rope bags for items that you would put tools in or groceries in so as they don’t roll around in back of your vehicle and could be carried in the house in theses bags and then taken back to the vehicle when groceries are put away I just love that again thank you

I'm going to try this out. Another Question- when you are doing a scrap or crumb quilt and have a LOT of seams and ragged edges, does this still work? I'm trying to understand more about that version of finger pressing. Do you do this before every single press? What about with big piecesbof long strips? Further, I have seen seam rollers on some pther CZcams channels. Could you use this instead of finger pressing?
Yes. I am a scrappy quilter and it's just perfect for scraps. Just be aware of the bias and avoid stretching it. It becomes habit very quickly as the results are worth it. I do it with small and large, long and short. It's a much faster step once your fingers know what they are doing. I do have a seam roller. I use it mostly for paper piecing where the seam are secured by paper and less delicate. When I don't have the paper, I roll in the same direction of my finger press.

Once you remember to finger press each seam it does become second nature and you'll see a big difference. It took me a little time to remember but I sure picked it up fast when I'd check my work. :)

Who knew that three easy steps could make the world of difference? I’ve always set my seams, and was instructed early on, “NO SWISHING” so that 2nd step was my missing link. Thanks so much for your easy to follow videos.

I came late to this party, being a recent subscriber of yours. I am so impressed with this video, I'm going to send it to my sister, who is the finest seamstress I know. She may well say, "Oh, I already iron just like that." But she will agree that it is better to be told twice, than never told at all.

Your techniques saved me. I haven't pieced in 20 years. Last year I sewed a quilt for my 3 year old grandson. Not one point matched and the blocks were not square. After watching your video lesson, my current baby quilt (grand daughter coming in July) has all matching points and blocks are square!!!!!!! Thanks you so much for sharing your knowledge.
