The most beautiful quilt I've ever seen was made by hand by my great grandmother who was a Choctaw native American. She used scraps of cloth left over from the clothes she made for her family. She used no pattern, no color theory, just stiched them together randomly. It was the most precious thing ever. Over the years it saw so much use that it finally deteriorated and had to be discarded. A sad day indeed. I sorely wish I had a picture of it.

I love all your advice and I can totally identify with the voices in the head problem. I find that when I have expensive fabric it is harder to cut into. I absolutely love making scrap quilts because I never fear wasting any fabrics. If I get too caught up in perfectionism, I look at some of the quilts that both my grandmothers made. They were fearless about combining patterns and colours and they are absolutely my favourite quilts because they have so much personality.

Trust in the design. I'm a newbie. Just finished my second Crib quilt with my BFF as my Mentor. She's been quilting since about 8. ...coming up on half a century experience! On my first quilt I decided on a Jelly Roll. She suggested some extra blocks. I got all blocks finished and started laying them out. BFF advised how to lay out. ...I tried about 11-ty-70 other layouts...and none were working for me. ...it was those extra blocks! I got advise from family members (non-quilters) who said BFF's layout was beautiful! ...so I backed my ears and went with it. >I< didn't get even partially comfortable with the layout until it was half quilted. I didn't 100% like it until I got the border on. There's so much more to this awesome skill of quilting than meets the eye!

There’s a wonderful place here in Ft. Worth where you can order material that they print on demand. I found a pattern that I just loved. Shades of turquoise with white crosses. Beautiful. So I ordered two yds to just be the main part of the quilt, planning to add to the sides to size it up. Well, the material was so precious that I couldn’t cut it. And...never could match to my satisfaction, anything to piece on the sides. So that wonderful, costly fabric is still in my closet three years later. Yes....I could make a lap quilt and probably will have to, but that’s not what I had in mind. So be careful buying precious fabric.

Wow when did you jump into my head. I have made myself learn and then apply and not to fret later. I never point out problems when I show other people my finish. I have learned that I am always learning to quilt better. I love every phase of the process from picking fabrics to putting my own spin on things. I do not worry about cutting because I have a ball with my leftovers and or oopses. Thanks for your down to earth approach and helping everyone new or not new to quilting know that they are never the only one to go through a particular problem. And my friends and I have done enough charity quilts to know that someone will love it.

I want to thank you for doing these videos. You chose a niche for emphasis that no one else was doing - not the tools, not the overall design, not the quilting. You chose how to do all the small steps for a successful outcome. It is SOOOO helpful. And, your videos are so understandable. I have watched some 2 or 3 times, but that was me not you (color theory, i.e.). This video is especially helpful. I have LOTS of patterns and LOTS of fabric, but Could Not Cut. Great video ! Glad you don't make colour theory complicated ! The Ontario College of Art has a colour theory course , its intensive! U of T in its art program has a colour theory course ,which discusses how certain colors are based on how light bends etc . You version is simple straight forward and straight to the point . I was wondering if you have done a video on cutting matts ? I was wondering what to look for and how much pressure to apply when cutting and if the Matt's dry out ? There so many different kinds of cutting matts out there ,it can be confusing ! Thanks ,cheers.

Maybe this will help you reconsider. I noticed 100% gray roots when I was dying my hair in my 30’s. It wasn’t a hard decision for me, so I quit dying my hair. In 6 months I had a head of mostly salt than pepper with the very little natural color mixed in. Everyone around me pretty much got used to it like I did, so it wasn’t an issue for anyone, but I have been told that I was brave to do so. Brave? For me, it’s part of our natural progression. We always try to change what we can’t change because of societal norms, and media pressure etc. So for me it’s not about being brave or whatever, I’m glad I’m not wasting money on hair dyes every 2 weeks. I don’t care what people think about how I look.

I will be making my first quilt from scraps left by my grandmother and I want to use them to piece together a quilt I think she would have wanted to put together herself if she was here. The material has been in about two boxes for decades now because my mother was not into quilting and just made dresses for herself and my sisters. I like the ones you made and if the first one is completed in a decent amount of time I will be making another one from fabric I buy and see if it turns out the way I want it to be.

So many great tips! I've had a quilt since 2000 that I had began with my best friend and she passed away before we could finish, which makes it so hard to get back to quilting. I'm getting there and with your help it is getting easier to have confidence in myself as we were both beginners. It's been 20 years! Thank you for the great videos. I'm subscribed, so I'll not miss any of them. Take care and keep well during the pandemic.

She would be happy for you, and perhaps she’ll be a helpful angel giving you support through it...when it’s done wrap in it and reminisce about your memories with her

I am color wheel challenged. I have never been able to understand the color wheel and I've been trying to learn it for sixty something years (at 72 I doubt that there will be a big revelation)! That's probably why I dress so monochromaticlly and prefer two to three fabric quilts. Oh yes, I've just realized that kits are wonderful (if they appeal to me)!

BTW, snap - I'm letting my hair grow too! Stay safe and well. Best wishes to your son. Love from Dublin.

A year later and CZcams says...here watch this tutorial.....I love Just Get It Done Quilts. You have given me ideas for organizing my quilt room and much more. I have a fabric stash but mine is more like precuts. I have jelly rolls...charm packs and layer cakes but all of my precuts I put a pattern name on all of mine so that way when I get done with 1 quilt I can just grab a precut and I know what pattern I bought the precut for. That way it takes all of the guessing out of..."what quilt did I buy this one for again"...kinda thing. I like to buy fabric when it's on sale lol. Then I'll bring it home and go through my pattern books and find a pattern I think it would look good in and go with it.
Thank you for all of your hard work. You are an inspiration to the quilting world. Love your channel! God bless.

Awesome video. Personally I enjoy choosing fabrics. I don't stress out, I trust my gut. And if ever I'm questioning a choice I ask a neighbor or someone who knows nothing about quilting about my color choices. Usually an untrained eye can pick out the mistakes real quickly.

That is a good idea. I never thought to ask someone who did not quilt about color. I also go with my gut, sometimes it is very hard to find just the right color. The last time was a gold sort of a burnt gold it took about three weeks to find it. But the quilt turned out very nice.

What I've done in the past is select three or four colors, place them next to each other until I'm happy with the way the pieces look side by side. I cut blocks and strips, alternating in a pattern. Pretty basic, but it seems to work, and the results are pleasing to me. Most quilts I've sewn are suicide survivor quilts. I generally ask what colors they like, and go from there.
