I am feeling so burnt out right now that disliking my job feels an understatement. Like you said, they simply just work until you break and replace you.. The only solution to this is not just a simple 3 day break but a job change .. :(

      Exactly. And many make it well known that your job is temporary, based on "performance reviews" completed by managers whose sole skillset is the old carrot and stick. I haven't had a raise that outpaced inflation in 3 years, but I've never been written up, had any corrective action, or criticized once. I have no idea what criteria would put me in a higher performance bracket because our metrics are measured based on reviews of just a handful of interactions out of tens of thousands we perform each year. It's like rating a quarterback on 4 random passes per game. And of course your job security is attached directly to that rating done by a middle manager with the skills and education of a second rate player.

      I think it's more of a treatment rather than the cure for burnout that's been around for a while. They also said that if going on vacations and breaks don't work at all, to consider looking for a new job. But quitting isn't always possible. These little breaks, even if they're not the miracle cure, are also what most people can do to help themselves.

      I hope you're doing okay, it sounds challenging like it's hard to relax at home. If you're happy and finding work okay and not able to relax at home then i wonder if it's home life/environment/conflict/commitments that's making you feel stressed and therefore impacting your ability to switch off and enjoy finishing things you enjoy whilst at home? Or if it's work that you're tolerating and maybe it's not really okay at work however it's taking all your energy trying to cope and pretend you're okay to get through the day that by the time you get home you too emotionally exhausted to complete anything you enjoy?
      Identifying your stressor and removing it from your life or restricting time on it and reinvesting that time into you and something you enjoy, starting small and seeing what you can change, what you can finish that you enjoy.

  • @jennylundphotography
    @jennylundphotography Před 5 lety +504

    Here in Sweden we have special clinics for burnout, and the criteria is different than these three you describe here. It has to do with changes in the brain (this has been proven) where you experience memory loss, you can't concentrate at all, information just doesn't stick, you can forget where you live or where you are going sitting in the car driving the same road you do every day etc. It's scary stuff. The body simply "stops functioning" and you can't get out of bed or you pass out due to exhaustion. It's so much more serious than "you don't feel like going to work". Recovery, if you have a serious burnout, can take years. It doesn't need to include depression, but some people have that at the same time. This is a serious syndrome, if you really have burnout syndrome it wont matter how much you WANT to get back to work and life, it wont help with positive thinking or just a little rest. It's a serious, serious syndrome that needs to be taken very seriously. But it's positive that this gets more recognition in other countries as well. Many get diagnosed with depression, but that is a different thing.

    Burnout doesn't happen just from a stressful work environment. Many people suffer burnout from caregiving or other situations. Many people experiencing burnout are overwhelmed in general in their lives. This pandemic worsened it because of the isolation and increased stress. That exhaustion that isn't relieved by sleep, feeling unmotivated and overwhelmed, depressed, disorganized. They are all part of burnout. And it can also make you physically I'll if it's bad enough. Everyone has a breaking point. We aren't machines and need time to rest our minds as well as our bodies to be healthy and happy. We need to talk to trained professionals who can give us good tools and coping strategies. Burnout doesn't just go away.

No one chooses to be ill or incredibly chronically stressed. Not saying you can’t be stressed and exhausted being a parent but it’s definitely and different situation. People have to work to live and pay their bills and buy food. No one has to be a parent.

      @@piperjaycie Actually, it is the same thing. Literally. Burn out occurs when putting other people's or a company's needs first all of the time. There is constant chronic stress when taking care of children because children are children. It's a huge responsibility. Even a vacation with children is technically not a vacation because you're constantly on alert to make sure the childen don't injur themselves, get lost, or worse. On top of that, single parents hold a job/s at the same time. And if they don't have a supportive job environment then trying to overcome burnout is even more difficult.

    The pandemic has made it worse by adding stress, and taking away the little daily escapes the helped. Where I am, I can get out for a brief walk, but it used to be that going for lunch at the nearby food court at least got me out of the workplace for a little while. Now because of a near lockdown in my city, I can get takeout, but have to back to the office. Just one example.

Often times, people in this state will not admit to themselves they are struggling due to external and internal pressures, but will argue they need to be tough and a decision to do something about it, is taken late when they are forced to do it because of impaired health and possible severe long term consequences. I know a thing or two from my own experience.

    • @Robootification
      @Robootification Před 3 lety +1

      @Tom Jones What would possibily compell you to put a gendered slant to the conversation?
      But if you want to go that route, consider that "mans' work" is typically associated with physical labour, at least in gendered conversations, and burnout is associated with emotional or mental labour. I might get physically tired after a hot day laying down a roof, but usually I can come home and eat and rest and feel better the next day. But when I've had a long day working with youth at risk, for instance, its much harder to just eat, rest, and recouperate - mental energy doesn't regenerate in the same way. And when you continuously are taxed mentally, you can only live well for a limited time while running a deficit.. eventually you dissociate, turn off, and shut down unwillingly - that is burnout. The same thing would happen if you just never stopped to rest from physical work. Often I have yearned for physical work when I have felt burntout from emotional labour.
      This is a super simplified explanation, and mind that burnout is just as probable for men as it is for women, but more probable regardless in jobs which demand: constantly being present or on, ready to engage in conversation, conflict, or decision making; dealing with people; constant connection both on and off the clock; service positions such as teachers, drs/nurses/care aids, etc.

      The biggest failure in American education is expecting students to work. Period. If you want education to be better, start by realizing it's not just a process to get through, that if you want to train the brain, the training needs to be the sole focus. Like training for a Mr. Universe title. You don't achieve that level of conditioning by flipping burgers 8 hours a day on top of your routine workout. Your workout becomes the only thing. Ditto education. If you want it to work, focus on it to the exclusion of all else.

    This segment was filled with pat and simple answers that aren't easy to execute.
    "Try and take time off work if you can"--that's like telling a fat person to go on a diet. A fat person knows that in order to lose weight they should diet. A person suffering from burnout knows that taking time off from work would help. THEY CAN'T TAKE TIME OFF WORK. That's why they're burned out!
    "Look for another job if you can"--And if you can't, then what? And if the problem is you're in healthcare in the middle of a pandemic and this is your CAREER, not a JOB that you can't just walk away from because the next place is just as overworked, then what?
    "Management can give you time off where they don't contact you". Keep dreaming brother. Yeah, let me go tell my boss to stop calling and emailing me. That will work.
    "3 days...That's the kind of break that you need". Um....no. You need WAY more than 3 days, Buddy, but since you're not seeing patients and in the thick of it, just sitting behind a desk with a nice suit on, you would think that.
    "If you could take little walk at work, that would help". Baby, I can't even get time for LUNCH on my job. My work day theoretically ends at 5. I typically go home between 6:30 or 7:30pm--depending on when I'm kicked out of the building by the person locking up b/c I'm still working--finishing paperwork and charting. My "lunch break" is often 6:31 or 7:31--when I get home. So, tell me when I would find to go on this "little walk" of yours?

But it’s not like those with mental illness or stress aren’t aware of these things or don’t know what to do. Some people don’t get it’s not that simple at all. Moving up in Walmart isn’t worth it. It just increases your chances of getting fired for other peoples short comings. I’m happier as a stocker and making more than most people in my store.

      I feel for you. I have to work too. I just left my job where the toxic environment, constant pressures and heavy workload led to burnout. I was off for 7 weeks but it didn't help with recovery. I start my new job tomorrow and I feel so anxious. I know I will be needing those bathroom trips just to breathe. Wishing you recovery and wellness.

    The thing is i dont mind some stress,but at the workplace you are not allowed to fight for yourself.
    If you start ANYTHING there you get FIRED
    I can fight,but jobs are absolute madness
    You are stuck between a rock and a hard place there and THATS what causes the burnout

    I cannot call this serious. Serious is more along the lines of exhaustion. Like becoming physically ill,feeling like you're going to pass out, and have little strength and serious fatigue. Like someone who works constantly with not enough down time or rest. Like single mothers. Mild burnout is common. But exhaustion is another thing entirely.

    "Burn-out is included in the 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) as an occupational phenomenon. It is not classified as a medical condition." - from WHO. It is not a medical condition. However, it is one of the contributing factors of poor health and people reaching out for help.

      know what you like, do what you love, try different things here and there. anything making you feel down change it or replace it. if you get the idea rest is up to you. remember you and your baby is number one priority for you.

    I really need help. I am a stay at home mom of 4, ages 15,8,3,1. I started feeling disconnected from house work, cooking, going out shopping, going for walks, like about 3 months now. I don't know where the interest went. I want my energy back, my interests back. I don't want to be like this. I don't have anyone to babysit, ai am at home 24/7 7 days a week. Unless if it's to drop of my older ones to school, or to get groceries, gas. My babies are the only reason I get out of bed in the mornings, they're the reason I do what I can. I love them, and I just want to be an energetic mom for them. I used to be this energetic person, that loved hiking. Now all that is gone. My memory is also the worst. I don't know if vitamins can help.
