Marcel, when you're holding the test light on the glow plug post of the relay, give the relay itself a hit and see if the light goes out. It could be arc-fusing inside causing it to stick. It may have an internal shunt between the relay's battery post and ignition post - explaining why you see 12 volts on the ignition post after the key is turned off. The fourth post is the computer control wire. The computer sends ground to that post which energizes the relay, closing the contacts and lighting the plugs. Good luck.
Solenoids work on the premise of two separate internal circuits, one low voltage ignition circuit which represents the two smaller terminals. Once energized, an internal magnet flips and activates the second high current circuit, represented by the two larger terminals. Again, both circuits are separate and independent. The solenoid is used so the high current glow plug circuit drawing lots of energy and pulling on large diameter wire, doesn’t have to pass through your ignition switch, which is low current and in a tight space like a steering column. High power circuit stays in the engine compartment, controlled through low current ignition wires in the key ignition.
Refer to engine starter solenoid to figure out how the glow plug solenoid likely works. Basic relay. Basically the same thing as far as I can tell. Not complicated.
Make sure you don’t short across the large terminals. Only 12 volts, but a huge amount of potential for current. If shorted incorrectly, you basically create a welder. Lol. It’s like shorting between the positive and negative terminals of your battery, and not likely fuse protected.
I think you're on the right track.
I’m not sure, but I’m wondering if it’s working properly. As I see it, the two smaller terminals are the terminals for the low current ignition. When you turn the key, power passes through the solenoid and activates a high current internal switch, which energizes both of the larger terminals for the glow plug circuit, which is separate. The whole point of a solenoid is much like a relay, to use a low current circuit, to control a high current circuit. You see these in starters. Your glow plugs are, I presume, on any time the ignition is on, calling for activation of the glow plugs to ignite your diesel in the “run” ignition position.
The wire with the boot is the hot to the battery. I believe it is always hot.
Ok now how to résolve the problème
Order new relay
