  • Timber Frame, Lofting / Drafting in 1:1, Hewing by hand with self made axe, Joinery with Hand Tools only, collar tie, arched brace, purlin, self designed joints - traditional Western & Japanese style. Forest hut restoration.
For more information please open the subtitles and read the text below.
    ---------------------------------------
    - What is the purpose of the renovation?
The roof structure is to be renewed. The Queen Posts and the trunk laying on the floor will be replaced by a Arched Brace structure. It will result in a more open space and add some beauty and room for insulation.
On the constructive level, the old design worked for many years, but still, i do not consider it most ideal. I prefer to conduct the weight closer to the carrying walls instead of having it on the Tie Beams.
    - Where did you get the design for this Timber Frame?
I made it my self. It is based on some work experience, feeling & instinct and adapted to the available wood.
Some knowledge has been gained in following literature: 'A Timber Frame Workshop' by Steve Chappell, 'Japanese Joinery' by Hideo Sato & Yasua Nakahara and some other, mostly German books.
I am not so good in using terms - if i named something wrongly, please just let me know in the comments. there is always something to be learned.
    - What is the advantage of drawing it 1:1 onto the floor?
To my experience, most mistakes happen while measuring. This 1:1 drawing drasticaly decreases the amount of needed measurements. Most can be 'copied' without using any number. Actually, only numbers needed where: the wished hight to the Purlins and the length of the Collar Tie.
It also gives a good overview on the look - much easier (for me at least) to judge on a 1:1 drawing with the wooden pieces than from a theoretical paper drawing.
    - Did you plan the joints before making them?
Not really. There have been some ideas in the beginning, but mostly they pop up while working.
    - Did you really use only Hand Tools for this project?
Not only. I used a chain saw to cut the trees, my girlfriend bought a Logosol Band-Sawmill where the squared lumber has been milled. To shape the braces before drying i also used my chainsaw. Later on a electric drill is used like shown in the video and for the surface i used a electric brush (Virutex ST 62). Are you interested in this finishing technic? You can mention it in the comments. I might show more in my next video.
    - Do you have a general tip, how to get good results while Timber-Framing?
I always keep an eye on following:
Giving the time needed. If i get's stuck, it means, i need a break. Listen and follow what the wood it telling, adapt to it, it is the master of beauty. Trust myself, trust my feelings. Enjoy what i am doing.

Nice work, you reminded me of when I helped my friend build his workshop. He documented on his workbench-notes blog.

I can almost feel the scent of the pine being cut. Makes me wish I had a reson to carve up s couple of pine logs into something.

Oh yes, this pine is full of resin. I much enjoy working with northern pine. It stimulates many sences. Visual and audio works with youtube - curious, if one day, they will add smell & touch...

Hopefully not🤔 Too many people would be stuck on their screens instead of touching real wood... like i am right now 😉
