  • Log cabin restoration - strengthening bent log house wall with support beam / follower. Self made timber frame with pine wood and hand tools.
More info: Subtitels & open here down!
    ------------------------------
    - What is it good for?
This support beam will keep the wall from bending more. It is used in old buildings which got weak with time or in case of adding bigger windows or additional doors which would weaken the wall.
    - Why was the down carved out instead of using the beam to straighten the wall?
A support beam can be used to straighten a not straight wall.
In this case i prefer to keep the wall as it is. It has been stable for many snow intensive winters, so it will be as it is. the bent does not disturb me as it will be under the floor.
    - Why are the wholes for the screws bigger than the screw?
The log wall and the support beam will not grow and shrink (according to different moisture of the seasons) in the same way. It is important to let them do it in their own way. The beam is fixed to the wall at the down end. Above, both can grow / shrink independently.

Is 'support beam' or 'follower' the right word for this thing? Please correct me!
Ist Aussteifungsbalken der richtige Ausdruck? Wenn nicht, verbessere mich gerne!

Beam refers to horizontal structure. This would be a support post.

Aaaah, die selbstgebaute Gestellsäge ist immernoch im Einsatz! Immer schön, wenn die eigene Arbeit der Zeit eine Lektion erteilt.

Nice work, thanx for sharing it.
You have nice chisel, the big one with the dark handle and the other one you use before, with the bright handle. Would you share what brand and where to get them?

      - small one: made in Germany by M.H.G. premium version 30 mm.
      - big one: made by Ferdin Rubens around 1900.
I really like it, but it is not perfectly sharp as the back side it not 100% straight. There will be a video about levelling this out and how to sharpen these big tools coming up soon.

That pine looks like it would have smelled wonderful when cut.
On a side note, where did you get the blade for your framed saw? Is it file sharpenable?

    • @littleforest
      @littleforest  Před 8 měsíci +3

Yes, it is sharpenable - You'll find a link it in the description of the video, where i made this saw.

I am bit confused: old wood on new lucking foundations... are you building a new cabin with old logs? Than, you'd have made the shown job before putting the windows... hmm i m just curious😉

Well seen! The foundations had been brocken. So last year, we liftet the cabin, digged new wholes and put the foundations you can see now in this video.

Gnarly wood...and assuming a curve doesnt necessarily denote any specific problem...
Steam bent woods, in ply especially...ARE SURPRISINGLY STRONG AND TOUGH
PROCESS IN CORRECTIVE ADJUSTMENT MAY ELIMINATE OR COMPENSATE FOR CHANGED GEOMETRY
    WE SHALL SEE...IF SHOWN
WOULD YOU HIRE THIS GUY FOR THE JOB OR FOR THE HOUR..?
