looks like the sentence is so mild because they struck a plea deal for a confession. he confessed to kidnapping but not murder. maybe her family lacked the funds to pursue a murder conviction but this seems a miscarriage of justice to give her killer such a mild sentence and avoid first degree murder conviction.

Am I the only person who, if told by a friend or loved one that they didn’t feel safe home alone, would insist on seeing them? Either crash there for the night or have them come over.
Same with night shifts. If an employee told me they didn’t feel safe one night, I’m out the door before I hang up the phone.
Not meaning to put blame on anyone, it’s just I couldn’t even imagine having someone tell me they felt paranoid and unsafe and just saying “good night” and hanging up.

I'm someone who suffers with anxiety and paranoia like Valerie did, and I think a lot of my friends and family would do the same thing as hers. I could be making a drive that I've done a thousand times before, then suddenly get hit with the feeling that I'm _definitely_ going to get into a crash and die that day... I'm practically convinced that the universe itself is telling me to prepare for my inevitable death, and well, I'm still alive. Talking on the phone or keeping a consistent conversation going over text until I say goodbye/goodnight is exactly how the people in my life deal with my anxiety.

I've told my wife multiple times, if she ever has a bad feeling about someone or something, to immediately call me and I'll walk her though what to do. We've discussed and practiced some things like break ins and stuff, but even if she can't put it into words, I want her to listen to herself. The subconscious is so fast at analyzing input that the conscious doesnt have time to notice. I have told her I will never judge or second guess her if she is worried. I dropped everything one day 2 years ago, came home from work early, and then that night our car was broken into so I know it's not just that she's paranoid. She might have seen someone walking by hours earlier a little too slow and not made a connection consciously. Regardless, we take those instincts seriously in my house.

But suffocation can take many hours and with each passing minute our bodies cry out for more oxygen which never comes. According to experts who study fear, this is causes the most potent anxiety that we can feel. Period.
If murder isn't bad enough, suffocation or drowning has to be the worst death imaginable and that's saying a lot.

It's a difficult situation. Having an anxiety disorder myself, I've worked hard to discern between illogical reactions that stem from my disorder and instinct that's telling me I'm in a dangerous situation. That's after years of CBT and reading about the biological underpinnings of my disorder though. It's hard to know your own reactions when you have chronic anxiety, let alone someone else knowing. It's all very subjective depending on what the anxiety sufferers specific triggers are too. I'm just saying it's not that simple.

"A Department of Justice spokesman confirmed that they are “working to find a resolution of the case without a trial.” The murder charge against da Silva means he could get the death penalty or life in prison. Been watching this channel for months, first time I've seen a local case. Not just 20 minutes from me... to say this hits a little too close to home is an understatement. EDIT: Just finished watching. Seeing so many local spots and places I've gone, like the Barnes & Noble I frequent -- where Valerie worked... so eerie and heartbreaking.

It's not really strange to like how someone smells. Our sense of smell is one of the first memories that we make as a individual. Perfect example, you remember the smell of your mother. You instinctively know her smell. That's how you know who your mother is before you even see her because you've learned her scent. Not sure if most people know this, but when we're first born and for like I think weeks afterwards or eyesight's pretty horrible considering we've never had to genuinely use it before. So a child will actually learn its mother by her smell and her voice before it will her appearance. I remember a lot of my ex-girlfriends by the perfumes that they would wear and I remember my wife by the scent of her shampoo. Not that she's passed away or gone or anything. I just smell certain sense sometimes and her image springs to mind
