Gotta keep in mind...there's also the performative element going on. A song like The Ballad of Me and My Brain is kinda _supposed_ to be mental....and so his performance captures that. Watching the entirety of this gig...I don't get the sense Matty is _that_ far gone tbh. Is he on something? Probably. And it seems to be helping him put on a stellar show. That's the double edge with things like that....they work! Until...they stop working. As for functioning, if you haven't done heroin yourself, you might be surprised by how capable some people are of not only functioning on it...but functioning better than most sober people. The stereotypes and tropes in movies are hilariously unrealistic. The overwhelming majority of people who use heroin don't end up like the characters at the end of Requiem for a Dream. People use substances like that....for a reason. There's a HUGE upside. Unfortunately, there can be a huge downside. Although to be fair, a lot of that is due to secondary factors like our legal and judicial system, as well as cultural shame and taboo. I'm glad Matty is in a better place now, but he'd be the first to admit his use wasn't a 100% horror show and that it served a useful purpose in some ways.
It's pretty much one of the best straight-forward rock songs of the last decade. Strip the labels off and it's simply rock n roll. And real good, at that.
I really do love this song. It's a nice combo of their slant on Emo along with some Shoegazey elements..... Girls and Chocolate are fun songs, sure....but they never did _that_ much for me. I definitely think they got better over time....and I mostly prefer their newer music. ABIIOR and NOACF are like modern White Albums...just brilliant. But old school stuff like this, or The City, or Falling For You, or Menswear, or Love Me....or, who am I kidding, ALL their stuff is excellent. Listing off individual songs feels silly.

ive seen these guys in Perth Australia outdoors and at the Paramount in Seattle WA and this song does not represent these guys at all... the rest of their show is ..like..borderline club bubblegum lgbt keyboard pop ....not knocking it good for them but these guys talent and forte definitely is this song, or this sort of song. When i very first heard this i thought it was a Placebo-esque alt rock type band and i got excited until i saw them and was like...er, oh theyre not alt rock at all...except this tune. And its frustrating that Sex is one of my all time fave songs but the band definitely isnt . If it werent for Sex i couldnt say id be a fan of 1975. But this song is COOOOL
Jayse if you listen to all their old stuff it's very rocky, and apparently the what a shame ep might be more rocky and the Drive Like I Do album definitely will because it's when they were much more of a rock band and only had their raw instruments to work with x
I felt exactly the same when I first listened to them but I ended up liking all their music. if you want more songs like this one tho I recommend listening to "milk" and "au bord de la mer" by them those are the only songs that gave off the same vibe as this one

Honestly guys, I saw them live, and this is the best song in the whole concert, the background screen in the night was absolutely amazing!!!!

Entire first album I’d say is pretty alt-rock kinda 80’s music on steroids. I will agree it did get pretty poppy after the first album.
