Hands-on review ORIS Aquis 41.5mm with the new Calibre 400 movement. The Aquis is the watch community's favourite affordable luxury dive watch, and Oris took it to the next level by adding their in-house developed movement, cal. 400. This new movement was launched in 2020 and is anti-magnetic, has 5-days of power reserve, a 10-year warranty and service interval. Impressive for a £2,700 watch.
The Oris cal. 400 has a quirk with the movement where the minute hand jumps when the time is set and movement is engaged. To correctly set the time, set the time, turn the crown backwards a 1/4 turn and then screw the crown in.

I own a Sellita Aquis and I think the integrated bracelet is one of my favorite features on this watch. It makes the watch wears better on any size of wrist. The lugs look almost like bracelet links so it just disappear and make the case flows better

As a previous gen Aquis owner I can say that I love this piece still. Yes, the rubber strap is quite expensive, but on the previous gen you do get an on the fly extension with it, which can justify the cost. Nice video as always.

    @JasonTheWatchGuy Před 3 lety +7

Incredible watch for the price and it's all down to that movement. Absolutely insane! The smaller feel comes from the tapering of the casing. I found even the 43.5 very wearable on wrist due to this.

What I like the best is how much better the small date window looks in the 41.5 size. For me it's an eyesore on the 44 almost as an afterthought. But here it's just better proportioned. It looks like it was actually designed by measuring the indices with the chapter ring. I'll buy mine in green.

I’m jonesing for an Aquis! Speaking of quirky, I bought an Oris Divers Sixty-Five (the discontinued one with the reverse-applied numerals) 2 months ago and it’s been on my wrist, night and day, as if superglued onto me by Satin! I absolutely love it and can’t seem to get it off of my wrist for more than a few minutes. It runs -.5/d consistently (that’s point 5 sec/day). I’m thinking of getting an Oris tattoo. And this a used watch from Bob’s. Still, an Aquis could turn my head....easily.

I think the 41.5 looks so good. I actually quite like a bit of bling in my diver. Dress it down and still look sharp. Wear it pretty much anywhere. Office. Beach. Whatever. Especially in covid times. 5 days power reserve. That's just nuts. My SPB149 does three days and I find that refreshing. And the thing that I think you didn't talk about much: It has a 10. year. warranty. That's value packed right there. Let's see if my wife finds it as great a value as I do.

It's amazing at how compact both sizes look on your wrist. That is actually quite helpful, as I've got an 18.4cm wrist, and the 43mm clearly would work quite well on it. I do wish it had more flexibility as far as changing out straps, as I do change them out on my current main diver. As you said, an adjustable clasp would be nice. However, I don't think it realistically would add all that much to the price, compared to everything else. There's engineering cost, but the cost to manufacturer cannot be that high (maybe it would be more for a Pelagos type system). That blue is just gorgeous, so I may have to get over the strap thing.

Another great vid. A while back I convinced myself I could pull off the 43.5mm version but ended up selling it. This new cal in 41.5mm is tempting me back. Have to say I find it slightly odd that Oris seem to be sending these out for review on the (not very nice) bracelet. To me, the Aquis makes so much more sense on the rubber strap. It's a great holiday watch and gives an affordable Aquanaut/Yacht-Master sort of vibe. As has been pointed out already, there is a brushed version. Hopefully they do a brushed version with the new movement.

There is actually a full brushed Aquis, even the bezel insert, with matte black dial and in my opinion it looks way better than the overly polished common version. But all around, this is a killer watch for the price! Thanks for the review and keep up the good work!

I agree. In the early mid 2000s, oris released a masterpiece called the "Titan small seconds" in titanium. It has a matt finish on the bezel and dial, very curvy bracelet and a wider clasp. It is a stunning piece which i own and will til i die. Would be nice to see the Aquis do the same. If not, good thing i have the titan.

Speaking of quirky movements: I bought an IWC Portugieser earlier this year (new, from AD), with their new in-house movement. Neither the sales person nor the instruction booklet bothered to mention, that you wind this watch... "backwards" (counter-clockwise). Imagine my heartbeat when I tried to wind it at home (before asking google) and the seconds hand wouldn't budge.

I think you hit the nail on the head in regards to the integrated bracelet, Adrian. That was a big part of my decision in going for a Captain Cook instead of an Aquis. Similar case size, similar specs (The Captain Cook has no lume pip on the bezel, but I'm only diving during the day), similar aesthetics, but you can't slap an aftermarket strap on the Aquis. The bracelet on the Aquis looks great and is comfortable, sure, but the same goes for the beads of rice bracelet on a Captain Cook, and I still switch that out for a rubber or nylon strap once or twice a week.

    • @joelopic

I own a captain Cook, 45 mm Titanium hyperchrome. An Oris titan, oris aquis. Oris tt1. Rolex submariner 41 and sea dweller 43. The oris are the most aesthetically pleasing of all. • @mwojciak
    @mwojciak Před 3 lety +1

A lot of movements have same issue with setting the minute hand. But with one major difference - you can do it right in Oris, while it is impossible in others... I had these issues with Piaget Polo S, Carties Santos Large, new IWC chrono 41mm, Hermes H08, Breguet 5157, ,Blancpain Bathyscaphe 38mm, Patek Neptune... And there was no way to set it without having minutes hand jump.

Love this watch especially with the blue dial. Love ORIS. Great alternative to a Tudor. Would like to see some improvements though. Don't need AR coating on top surface of sapphire. What was ORIS thinking? Don't need a bracelet extension. How many people are going to do anything more than desk dive or swim with it? Clasp needs to be improved, and you should have ability to adjust the clasp with out a tool. If that meant extra cost, so be it. I would also love to see a matt version. I think this polished version maybe a scratch magnet.

The Aquis range has always been a beautiful watch dating back before it even called the Aquis, in fact even further back to the early 2000s when it was the TT1. Over the years the case and dial have been slightly refined and modernised. The bracelet however is a different story. The pre Aquis bracelet was wider, thicker, more curvy, more masculine and just had an overall greater presence. The present bracelet looks like the under nourished child of the previous. That apart and regardless of movement, they are a beautiful piece.

    • @joelopic

Perfectly stated. I've been preaching the exact same words for years. The reason they did it was to save weight. As you know the aquis and pre Aquis can get a bit heavy. I think it may not be available now, but it was available in black only (the ceramic bezel is also matte) and appears more like a charcoal grey than jet black. The case and bracelet are fully brushed and the only polished part is the bezel surround (and the hands / hour markers). I tried the blue version on instore, but it was way too shiny for my liking. The matte version is much more ‘tool’ like. I also bought a black rubber strap for it, which is superb.

bought a aquis gmt carysfort limited ed at the weekend (i know it doesn't have the same movement as above before someone comments) but I went in to look at a LHD Pelagos and wow the oris blew me away, the colours on the Carysfort dial are unbelievable and it felt like such a presence on my wrist I had to take it, I do agree on the £200 for the rubber strap, i've ordered one because I have to have the option with it being my only 'luxury' watch at the moment, but it was quite sickening... Great video.

Love the look of the integrated bracelet, but it’s definitely a detractor - especially with the new caliber otherwise giving it so much potential. I’d buy it in a heartbeat if it had a 20mm lug width

Nice enough I prefer the smaller one, wouldn't buy the strap though. You've answered a question I have wondered about the later explorers, I never wind my 1016 doesn't matter how long its not been worn, as soon as you pick it up it starts. There seems to be no hysteresis in the system at all.

I have a few Oris watches. Really a big fan of the brand. I love your idea Adrian. Bring on a non shiny Aquis with a matte ceramic bezel too. I'd happily part with my money for that.

Totally agree on the matt Aquis. One thing that’s always put me off is the fact it’s a scratch magnet.

Yes, that is why I bought the Sellita version. I hate high polish finishes and they have a brushed version (only in black) of the Sellita.

Doesnt their clasp on the rubber strap have on the fly adjustment? I wonder why they dont just utilize that clasp on the bracelet as well? Similar to Breitling clasps being fairly simply pressed metal foldovers but their clasps on the rubber straps are nicely milled with quick adjustment

I agree matte aquis too shiney. they should use the clasp for the rubber strap on the metal then it would be on the fly adjustment to

It actually applies to a lot of watches, its better and more accurate to move the time forward then set it back slightly. So really shouldnt be a problem or even a "qwerk"

Hey Adrian, if you want a matt version of the aquis I would recommend the titanium master diver:
    ORIS REGULATEUR “DER MEISTERTAUCHER”
It’s on the lighter side but it’s all brushed finish over the case and bracelet with a matt ceramic bezel insert and the clasp is a bit wider if you think you would prefer that.
    Thanks
Also for the rubber watch strap, you can buy just the rubber strap without the clasp for cheaper, normally under £100 rather than the £200, if you already have a rubber strap clasp. Personally though I think the rubber strap clasp is amazing for getting a comfortable fit

Speaking of quirks on watches, when I first got my OP (116000), I noticed the crown wouldn’t pull out. Like it was really really hard to pull it out. I was really afraid of breaking it, until I discovered that I needed to twist the crown counter clockwise and that would allow the crown to be pulled out effortlessly! Till this day, I’m still not sure whether that’s something “normal” on this caliber, but if someone knows please let me know!
Keep up the great job, @barkandjack !

As for matt… the IWC aquatimer 2000 GST gets you there, but probably twice the price. I like the aquis but agree it’s too blingy. The Carl Brashear with the cal. 401 is where I would be looking.

The Oris Aquis in Titanium looks more matte, doesn't it? Gives it that proper toolwatch look in my opinion, just like the early predecessor, the Oris TT1 Diver.
Great roundup! It's a bit too shiny for my taste as well.

Hi Adrian, you are correct in your observation about the type of buyer of this watch. The Oris Aquis 43mm was my first and only watch for years. Still love it, but the old bracelet was much thicker than this one and I wanted to swap it for straps, but it wasn't easy so never did.
After your recent reviews of your white dial seamaster I took the plunge this summer and bought my first 'luxury' watch on my birthday, the white dial Tokyo 2020 edition seamaster.
    Keep up the great reviews!

I owned a previous iteration of this watch with the sellita movement..... It was definitely a decent watch at the old price point..... Not sure now (well maybe)...... I didn't like it that it was so shiny, the bezel didn't line up that perfectly and the movement did actually stop working at one point....although it did take me 8 weeks or more (and it cost me £230) to get a rubber strap, they are AMAZING.... I would happily pay that for it again, exceptional quality with great comfort exception.....

Great videos, B&J. Oris should include the rubber straps for free with the bracelet option. I also agree that the clasp need the sliding micro adjustment. I still have an issue with price increase though. It is now competing with the Brietling Superocean Heritage II. Just wondering how many people out there care about the 5 days power reserve. I respect Oris!!! I own a big crown propilot.
