We did a First Ride Review of the New 2023 SurRon Ultra Bee here: • NEW 2023 Surron ULTRA ...
I did 3 full battery range tests in this video, running the bike from 100% to 10%, in sport mode, at both a motocross track and offroad singletrack. My 3rd test was on a flat dirt road, in eco mode, going approximately 30-35mph.
The battery on the Surron Ultra Bee is a removable 74 volt, 55 Ah battery, totaling a capacity of just over 4 kWh.The bike is putting out 12.5kW of peak power in sport mode, which is the power mode we selected for the off road segments of this test. The rider in this video weighs roughly 165 to 170 pounds with gear on.

Range is about what I expected. This would give plenty of range for my use case (family forest service road rides or slow, technical single track rides). More range than my Surron Light Bee and likely much more comfortable. The Light Bee's poor suspension and cramped cockpit have me ready to get off of it by the time the battery is dead on those slow, technical single track days. That is even with taller/larger seat, 21" front wheel/tire, 3/4" rear link, good foot pegs and lots of other mods (no battery or controller mods, though). Just wasn't worth throwing money into suspension on the light bee chassis. So now trying to decide if I just wait for my Varg, or also replace the Light Bee with an Ultra Bee. Still have ICE bikes and ATVs to ride, too, so might not be worth it. But sure like the forks, brakes, larger cockpit and greater of the Ultra Bee.
Regarding the chassis geometry, sounds to me like it was designed for a 21" from wheel/tire, but then they put a 19" on it at the last minute. Not sure why else it would be sitting in such a stinkbug stance and turn so sharp. That might work out great, however, since it sounds like the geometry will be perfect with 21" on the front. But, it's silly expensive to get a hub laced up, so Surron should just offer the 21" front from the factory.

According to the data you provide, at no time would it be even close to reaching 87 miles, which are what the manufacturer promotes to us.

    • @MrChadx1
      @MrChadx1 Před rokem

@@Alansweet Gravel has a lot of rolling resistance. Speed, even 10mph, has a huge impact. The 87 mile range is based on 25mph and likely done on a indoor test dyno. Riding on level smooth asphalt at a stedy 25mph would probably get much closer to the 87 mile range than 35mph on gravel.
The Ultra Bee has about twice the battery capacity as the surron light bee but the Ultra is heavier, so the above results seem about right since they are roughly twice those of a light bee in similar conditions.

I'm on my second moto-trials to electric trials bike conversion. Your range numbers (for 4kwh) are quite close to what I've calculated, based on fuel consumption figures of my 4-Stroke Honda Montesa trials motorcycle., assuming its specific fuel consumption is 0.5 lb/hp-hour, and at 750 watts per horsepower. One other critical variable in range is tire pressure, and on a gas bike the best fuel economy (or range) is in the highest gear. My first e-bike conversion used a 5-speed gearbox with a clutch, as is the current one. I like having a range of gears, even on an e-bike.

In that 26.2 miles on the single track scenario, how much seat time do you think you roughly got? I’m more used to hours on a bike vs. miles.

Excellent real world test. Thank you. Your single track ride appears much faster than we ride. If you get the opportunity to ride some tight, nasty root and mud sections, then I would like to see those numbers. Avg speed for us is about 12 mph, avg length of ride 40 miles

PLEASE think of the people using proper measurements (not freedom units) when making these, really annoying if thousands of viewers each need to convert them, if it would have taken you 30 seconds once while recording... - Having said that: Thanks for taking them time to make these, some of the best Ultra Bee content out there!

I was hoping for more single-track range, but sounds like you can limp home at around 30 miles.

Also there's a mode between sport and eco, daily. That may fit well with most technical singletrack and make for longer range.

@@hobsonmx7341 Sort of what I'm doing. Ordered an Ultra Bee, keeping my Alta, will likely sell the Alta at some point before my Stark Varg arrives. Will decide which to keep after riding them, the Varg or the Ultra Bee. May keep both depending. Can't wait to get both the Ultra Bee and the Varg. I'll be broke but who cares, Lol.

Preload should never be used to adjust sag! Thats the coil's job! Preload and rebound should be all the way off to set sag, Then add rebound untill confortable, then set preload!

In terms of performance I would compare it to crf 300l.... same time 0-50 km/h and also the same 0-80km/h. You get almost half the weight and less noise but only limited range. What seems stupid for me is that some people have to change drive belt in surron every 1000km... and the belt is more expensive than the cost of petrol required to do 1000km on crf 300 (at least in europe) :/

Old pro says; Taller handlebars should be used to move the rider weight back and improve stability.
Range numbers give zero surprise. My big question is how durable this jackshaft will be. The lightbee jack-shaft/swingarm pivot is total shit.

You guys should redo this video but just with the couple modifications that every person who buys these does (sprocket, x ring or roller chain, and 18/21 wheels/tires). I don't think anyone who takes these off road keeps the stock wheels, chain, and sprocket.
