Blue Goose
Editing Notes:
-- The major changes made were a significant number of level adjustments in the first track and eq to all tracks. Other than that, it was a question of repairing as many of the myriad relatively minor flaws of this very old recording, as best as was possible, Also a few other small level changes have been made. Finally some noise reduction was applied throughout.
Notes:
-- We verified that the transfer for this release was from a first generation MAR copy. According to Barry Glassberg, "Lou [Tambakos] got the tape from Marshall [Leicester] and we transferred it at Scott Rostler's apartment on his gear."
-- "These are, without a doubt, the finest sounding versions of these historic recordings that I have ever heard!! I never thought that they would ever be available with such clarity. A real pleasure to listen to. For me, the single most exciting track is "99 Years", hearing the young Pigpen doing what he did the best, singing the blues." - SIRMick, September 2007.
-- The tape box shows that the performer of "Blue Goose" was Ken Frankel. Ken was a friend of Jerry's and played with him in several early bands during 1962-63. Mick recently contacted Ken and, after hearing Blue Goose, confirmed that it was him performing on this track. In addition, he thinks that it was probably taped by Rodney Albin, who ran The "New" Boars Head.
-- We think Rodney Albin possibly taped the Sleepy Hollow Hog Stompers performance. However, that is basically speculation, based in part on the correspondence with Ken Frankel.

Wow, what a blessing to listen to this. Jerry joking that they're gonna "do a hundred more songs, stick around is you have the stamina" We're still listening, Jerry. NOT FADE AWAY
Comment of the week right here ❤
Beautiful piece of History . Not FADE Away , east coast Canada .
Special. Thanks so much!
Wow. So lucky to be listening to such a gem. So cool to hear such a young Jerry. Thank you so much for this!!!
The sweet sounds of then-19-yo Jerry Garcia will stick in your head like no other here, in what is probably the best audience recording I've ever heard. Hilarious banter throughout. Enjoy fam.
You're the best.
(I wasn't sure if that was Jerry or Jack Kerouac. Jerry is a dharma bum. lol)
Thank you kind soul✌️❤️😁
wow thanx
We love you!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
What essential part of GD history. In the early 90s I would give an old HA tapes. I had some bluegrass shows and asked him if he would be interested in some live bluegrass. In a rough, gravely voice that fit a 1% biker, he loudly states "any Deadhead that doesn't like bluegrass, isn't worth his salt as a Head"😂
Jerry lowkey gave a bluegrass history lesson throughout his little bits of stage banter
I can't believe this exists, never mind the excellent quality of the sound!
Jerry's Birthday is August 1st, 1942. He would've been 19 years old at the time of this recording. His depth of artistry at so young of age and the quality of this recording A+++. 1962!
Thank you! W.O.S It's Incredible!
PS: I read your post after I henpecked mine. I figured "great minds think alike."
Wow! A treasure - thanks for sharing. 👍❤️
Wow 99 years don't think I've ever heard that Thanks again
This is lovely. Thank you. It's intensely poignant to hear 19 year old Garcia playing and singing Sweet Sunny South here, then listen to his recording of it with Grisman some 30 plus years later.
I've heard this before but never knew it was also a Jewish Community Center. During these times of trouble, this is important. Jorma , Jerry ,Marty Balin and so many more in this era were Jewish. I'm not Jewish but love these fellows.Music is the best way to get along.
i was almost 4 when this was done...................................60 years later i am happily on the bus..............
The way way back machine. Excellent!
Mr. Peabody is that You?
This is a rare and precious gem!
Thank you WoS!

Cheers to you! 💨💀💨

Yep, sure did!
Can’t wait to listen!!!! T Y!!! ❤🎸🙌✨💨💨💨✨💫
It's interesting that on stage here he jokes about 'stealing the songs from 'The Ramblers' who stole them from old records'. Presumably this is a reference to 'The New Lost City Ramblers', which had Mike Seeger and Tom Paley in the band. I knew Tom when he was old and lived in London (he came from NY, but was also on the west coast back then). He stayed with me when he came to Cambridge to play in my folk club and he regularly used to turn up at the Sharps Folk Club in Camden. I chatted to him a couple of times about teaching Jerry old time Banjo, which would have been in the early 60s - the really old pre Scruggs style.
Tom did indeed play quite a few of the songs on this recording as his standards and is credited with recording the first 'folk revival' album in 1948 (Folk Songs of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, 10" vinyl LP), on which he plays songs taken from old 78's recorded in the 20's and 30's, playing them in the way they were originally played, not in a sanitized way, as had become popular then. Which is just what Jerry and the others do here. My friend Robin Gillan, who I play in a ceilidh/old-time/barn dance band with now, used to be Tom's back up player when he toured the UK in old age. Robin plays old time Banjo, Fiddle etc. You can hear him here: www.youtube.com/@robgillan2245/videos . It is strange how things connect up.
This music is just sooo good 👍!!
The blues tune just prior to the last song has vocals and harmonica that sound EXACTLY like a young Ron McKernan. Jerry mentions towards the end of the harmonica player named "Ron"
So if that ain't Pigpen...
I ain't Steven 😛 !!

It's so rare, you'll do a triple take!
Oh wow!! Thanks man! This is sweet. The art is 🔥🔥🔥🔥. So is this the stuff that Kreutzman said made him the first deadhead?
I think it was the Roses. (Or the mighty L. From buck private to Captain Trips.)
Sounds like Old Fugs! Tune
:)
Is this available on CD?
Nice!
Does anyone know when he started reading the urantia book 📖, Maybe with Watts?
Thought they were Hog Stompers
They are.
Fixed - thanks!
Whoa! 1962 Grammy Awards included best song "Moon River" and best Rock and Roll song was Chubby Checker's "Let's Twist Again". Best R&B went to Ray Charles for "Hit the Road Jack".Best new artist? Peter Nero. Ironically, the Dead never won a Grammy but for a Lifetime Achievement Award. They were honored for the entirely of their music, just not anything specific. Had they hired Peter Nero to sing, maybe history would have favored them!
Welcome to in between history.
@@namcat53 Peter Nero was a pianist. Don’t ever remember him singing. My parents had an album or two
@@deweygill1973 Yikes. I thought that he was a fiddler who watched Rome burn (maybe he sang a bit whie that was happening?)
@@danielthomasmoran Good one! LOL
HOG stompers, not log stompers.
❤
If anyone ever mentions to me that Jerry Garcia was anti-American or counterculture I think I will punch them in the face. Jerry Garcia served his country, he didn't claim he had heel spurs or asthma attacks. He didn't receive an honorable discharge, thank God. Jerry Garcia is the Johnny Appleseed of our time. I miss you Jerry, and I love you. I only hope you will be judged with prejudice on Judgement Day
garcia was 18 here. unreal
