yeah that REALLY pissed me off, so many theories many of which were great and they decided to go down the same old fucking path. Like fuck, this is why i don't trust anything anyone tells me now. There is so much BS in video games (and other things too) that I literally don't give a damn about what "innovation" they have done or whatever buzzword they use. My one and only concern is "is this fun" "will I spend more money than the game is worth" "is it buggy" etc? before your try new things, fucking cover the basics first then innovate
My favorite was the idea that we’re finally giving the joker a break then the game literally gives you a .45 caliber wake up call.
He should’ve been a red herring, imagine doing the whole Jason plot line, adding more suspects close to Batman only for it to just be a nobody, a highly trained killer, someone who can compete with an older, slower Batman
They could have just used red hood in his entirety instead of turning him into the immensely uninspired character he was.
I don’t have a problem with the Arkham Knight being a classic villain in a new identity but Jason was the wrong choice if you want the Arkham Knight to be a memorable villain, I would have chosen Thomas Elliot AKA Hush as the Arkham Knight as he changed his face to resemble Bruce Wayne, which could have made for a plot where he tries to undermine Bruce Wayne by framing him and making people think that he’s the Arkham Knight which would force Bruce to unmask himself as Batman whilst Tommy uses his fake mask to arm his thugs with Wayne Tech especially modified Bat mobile prototypes and even using Wayne tech to damage Gotham!

Arkham City is still my favorite for gameplay and story. Also because it was the first game I ever owned.
One of the things that really got my goat was the awful character designs this time around. The last games stood out because they took the comic books and managed to convincingly transplant them into the realm of 3D. This time they took a big hefty breath of the bland designs of the Nolanverse and left everything looking outright hideous.
Then there's the Arkham Knight... was anyone even remotely shocked to find out it was Jason Todd? I wouldn't even have cared if it was some completely new character, or someone completely unexpected. You can't set up a big mystery if you're just going to have the most obvious reveal imaginable.
And Joker... seriously, they've done this shit for the last three games. Ra's Al Ghul and Hugo Strange teaming up to crush Batman? Nah it was Joker. Black Mask hiring the worlds best hitmen to take down Batman? Nah it was Joker. Scarecrow making his masterstroke against Batman? Nah the last battle is with Joker.
crossbones116 I actually cut out a whole rant in there about the art design, but honestly? I found it equivalently bad in the previous games. Harley Quinn going from a harlequin to just some goth skank in a corset, (if they were a chick in the Arkham games - and they weren't full-on nude - they were wearing a corset. Because art design) all the needless piping on Batman's costume, the Bat-Tank, Joker's über-edgy mouth scars, the fact that everyone is perpetually caked in dust and dogshit... Arkham Knight Rider was simply the culmination of an entire _series_ mired in hackneyed art design.

***** It was kinda justified in Asylum because she was going for some 'psycho nurse' angle. In City she was some random juggalo broad, and in Knight she became a bizarre mashup of the two. Batman donned some psuedo-Iron Man nonsense, Riddler was wearing a Hawaiian shirt instead of his usual dapper suit and bowler. Scarecrow had some weird zombie-shtick going on for him and it looked like an edgy Deviantart redesign of his Asylum getup.
The characters being encased in shit really didn't help.

Still I think it was an issue with Unreal Engine 3. They problably went through development hell and could not abandon UE 3 since most of their assets were there. They could not go to UE 4 right away as EPIC released it last year. So their art style suffered a bit. Still not as bad as Arkham Knight being a new character. For me they could mimic the near perfect movie Batman Under the Red Hood and still get great story.

I preferred him in the New 52. I hate when comics are to convoluted. I can't afford to buy all comics in order to keep up with everything that happens. Also I don't have that much time. So in the New 52 it was easier to follow.
I'm a half decade late to this game, but I've gotta ask...Did anyone else audibly cheer when the Batmobile exploded? And then die a little inside when the new one showed up? Honest to fuck, I hate that thing. It's bad enough I needed to buy the '89 costume just to retain my dignity, the least they could have done was figure out a way to make the '89 Batmobile function in single-player so that I can at least pretend I'm playing an actual fucking Batman game. I hate the tank. I viscerally hate it and I'm not even done with the game yet. When did Riddler get obsessed with Hot Wheels tracks? What the fuck does a race have to do with puzzles and riddles? What the hell happened to the tightly designed predator sections from the first game that rewarded patient observation? Why has the cast of villains consist of the same ones we've seen thousands of times?
Believe it or not, I actually am completely OK with the Joker. For one, I will take any opportunity to hear Mark Hamill be a giddy, cackling lunatic. Secondly, to their credit, they really mess with your head sometimes in this game. I remember the first time I noticed the billboards were a little off and did a double-take, only to see it was normal...Until I looked a third time. I like that kind of subtle, corner-of-your-eye thing that makes you stop and say "Am I actually seeing things, or was that Joker's face on there?"
I feel you, brother. The Tank Batmobile is yet another facet of Nolan's legacy that refuses to go away.

Am I the only one that believed the Joker was just a fear toxin hallucination? I didn't really buy into the fact he was being possessed. At any point. And I still don't, even though the game was trying to shove that nonsense down my throat, I still feel they left it ambiguous enough.

Yes. The music is fucking mediocre. Ciy is so good I listen to it for fun.
It's easy to say that it is the weakest game of the Arkham Trilogy (yes, I said trilogy), but I still enjoy it when it lets me to play the game. They added more to the combat with more enemy varieties and movesets, the predator are fun as well, but they crammed the Batmobile way too much for my enjoyment. All the activities with the Batmobile were fun for the first few times but it becomes a chore after you have to do this over and over again.
The side-quests are fun....if you can find them, "Yes, Alfred I need to find this indicator to start this side-quest somewhere in this huge-ass island, can you narrow it the fuck down" Arkham City got around it by having the radio frequency pointing you to the general direction to find it or have NPC helicopters informing you the side-quest.
Rocksteady said it will be the last Batman game, Arkham Knight was the beginning of the downward slope and they knew they had to get out before it really goes downhill.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the fact that Batman constantly monologues about what the player has to do to advance forward. Yes the three games before AK did that somewhat as well but here you literally can't do anything without Batman saying "I should do.....".
I though Mark Hamill's performance was the only thing that saved that game from being a complete abortion. Yes, it was shitty writing (like you said, there's a wide variety of characters that should have shared the screen) but in a weird way Hamill's effort outweighs the shitty writing.

The point, which you apparently are simply incapable of grasping, is that we now have *fucking tanks* all over the streets, dozens and dozens of them, as a transparent and shallow tool to get the player to (over)use the Batmobile.

Comic book games by their nature strain credulity and bend the rules. That much is a given. But when we go from two previous games set in something APPROACHING a mature narrative, to essentially "G.I. Joe in Gotham", your story telling has taken a dive down the shitter.
It doesn't matter WHO is controlling the tanks, you twat. It doesn't matter what hollow plot device is cooked up for it. It went from a dark, gritty Batman game, to G.I. Joe with the Batmobile.
It was a shallow way to shoehorn the Batmobile into more of the game, and you know it.

The biggest problem with Troy Baker, Steve Blue and other big name voice actors is there over played as fuck. All very talented, but Troy is easily the most over saturated VO at this point and time. Also, the Joker was coming back, I think we all knew it.

I don't know if this has anything major to do with the story's horrible progression, but I read on several articles that Paul Dini was not involved with writing Arkham Knight's story. It could possibly explain why this game just doesn't have as big of a punch for a conclusion of a series or why some certain points just felt really cliche to Batman fans, but I digress. One of the worst aspect of this game are the boss fights (or if you can even call them that). If you're a boss in this game, you're mostly regulated to normal predator segments, bat-tank battles, or just punching dozens of mooks until you win. Even some of the unique bosses like Riddler and the Arkham Knight were ok at best, but that's not enough. Arkham Asylum had Bane as a beginner titan boss to get you familiar with how titan thugs worked in that game, Killer Croc felt more like surviving a sewer of death, Poison Ivy had you fight a giant plant monster. Titan Joker was...well a titan thug with no charge attack. Arkham City had Solomon Grundy for an easy beginner boss, Ra's Al Ghul as a test of reflexes against ninja copies and all the stuff his sand statue threw at you, Mr. Freeze adapted to your strategies every time, and Clayface was a lightning fast wrecking ball who can create copies of himself. Harley and Two Face as predator bosses were smart in their own way since those fights focused on isolating targets than anything else. Hell even Arkham Origins had some really good fights with a cool premise or two (Deathstroke, Copperhead, and the 2nd Bane fight being the top 3 bosses in my opinion). I know to some Batman doesn't need boss battles to make his games any good, but for me it's those unique moments I enjoy because provide a unique experience that separate you from what you do normally in game. Batman has a huge gallery of villains that could've easily had unique moments of combat, stealth, batmobile chases and heck even gliding if they could do it right. Guess we'll never know for sure.
It's really sad they couldn't be bothered to get Richard Moll for Two-Face.
This series is the epitome of feature creep...except with regards to PC options and features.

Arkham Knight's story was as interesting as Suicide Squad was entertaining. Would've had more fun playing "put the testes in the bear trap" than spend another hour driving around tediously in the Batmobile. Fun at first but drawn out later.

Given how hard Batman hits the criminals with either his car, his car's guns, or his fists and feet, half of them who survived long enough to be sent to the hospitals probably died on the operating table. The others probably died thanks to health complications down the road.

Great review, but I think you missed one important note. The battling of the sub-conscious in Bruce's mind, aka Batman vs Joker. After all, with a battle tank (which he uses to fight Deathstroke with in the middle of the city), capturing people and torturing them (for a cure), and makes a temp home base in a theater; isn't that something that Joker would do?

I was lucky and saw a video of some of the Riddler's segments, and decided not to buy it. This video verifies what my impression was. I've come up with a few rules;
1. No kickstarter or prefunding schemes
2. No pre-purchases. This includes paid alpha and beta testing.
3. No seasons pass, digital bonus schemes
4. Research reviews and performance after release, this includes the DRM or "Anti-Circumvention" schemes.
Developers and marketers need to understand that I am a gamer. What this means is that I modify how I do things based on my and others experiences. I also do this in the market.

I actually enjoyed it, but realized you can just go into battle mode, and tank control not even moving just dodging to win every situation lol. Think it'd be fine in a transformers game or something but jesus was that over used. Also the enemies being drones I think really kills the fun.

I always appreciate the blunt honesty you show in your videos Razor, especially when they're games that everyone fawns universal praise over despite its flaws. That said, I was curious on two things:
I remembered in the introduction of the game that all of Gotham was evacuated so that the only ones left in the city were the bad guys. Does this ease the idea of Bats on a murderous rampage against innocent civilians or is this a flimsy excuse in your opinion?
And also I can tell you're more or less sick of hearing the same guys in every video game ever, yet the voice actors for Two-Face (Troy Baker) and Penguin (Nolan North) are the same ones since Arkham City. Did you feel their performance was weaker in Arkham Knight than in previous games or were they just consistently not to your taste? And if it were up to you who would you have preferred them to cast?

Was I the only one hoping Nightwing, Robin, Red Hood, and catwoman would actually be somewhat useful and active in gotham? I swear Bruce threw them all out as quick as possible to give them an emo goodbye and handle it himself.

Worst Boss Battles in the series in my opinion. Especially the Arkham Knight boss "Battle" was nothing but Crouching and waiting for the turrets to leave. The Deathstroke fight in Origins was arguably the best fight in the series in my opinion. Mr. Freeze Battle was in high aspects as well. The terrible PC port could've ran on my Atari Lynx for pete sakes. Don't forget the surprise "Reveal" of the Arkham Knight, which was supposed to be an "Original Character" they were pitching this game as for months. Plot twists were not shocking, it even made Bill drift into daydreaming. The Batmobile was handled the most poorly. Lego Batman 2 of all games handled the Batmobile better than Rocksteady did. Spot on review though. But it's hilarious to see both Fanboys of each platform claim how the console version is running "flawlessly"(It's still shocking to see how people think 30fps runs "flawlessly".) Thank goodness I haven't purchased a PSsnore or an Xbrick One yet. The Wii U and PC is all I need in this terrible console generation. -Hillary

this is actually the dark knight returns equivalent of batman as they state in the main story by scarecrow. The story is meant to show that batman has become more sadistic than usually and that excuses batman from killing.
I absolutely loved Ark City, besting that is nigh on impossible.

The little I did manage to play at a STAGGERING 30FPS with constant framedrops to single digits (on a strong PC) felt to me like "Asylum but nowhere near as tightly-designed", which happens to be largely the same thing I thought about City. That series took a drop after the first game, it seems.
MrJobocan Ehhh I think the drop was after City. While the overall game wasnt as tight as Asylum the Combat mechanics where a lot tighter, far less missed counters in City than Asylum. Origins was just a shitty cash in, Which Rocksteady semi doesnt recognize as the back of Knight says "Trilogy". And as for Knight well its a pretty poor send off for what was probably the best super hero game series ever made.
memnarch129 Origins may not be as great as the rocksteady games, but it shouldn’t be dismissed outright. While parts of it, especially the opening cutscenes, are pretty zack snyderish, there’s some legitimately good joker stuff in it, and troy baker does a pretty good job on the voice, considering the shoes he had to fill. admittedly still the weakest arkham game, but i don’t think it’s as bad as a lot of people say

I'm a bit sad that you didn't at least give a passing mention to the fucking atrocious performance on PC. It was so bad that they had to pull it from Steam.
So thankful I didn't buy this on day one to test out the GTX980 for more then several reasons, and glad Razorfist was the only real review I have seen on this game minus a preview from a friends video on this same game. Again like the 2 previous games the best thing for me to do with this series is to just wait till a GOTY edition comes out and pick that up. I did it with the first one cause I was just super skeptical, Arkham City I picked up on the 360 and hated the moments of slow down so I then picked it's GOTY edition for 20 bucks. This one I intended to wait, didn't hurt me in the past that I didn't play this series on day one release. Turns out I am pretty much good on sticking to that train of thought.
I knew they'd find a way to shove the Joker in there, but I don't blame them because Mark Hamill is amazing. Still waiting for the PC version though...
P.S The Power Rangers thing at the end absolutely killed me!
iam suprised that pepole only now noticed that batman can kill in city you could pick a car door and smash it on thare faces or you could drop them form grygoyls that will probbly kill them
While I do love the first game and generally like the second, I have yet to play Origins, I don't see myself getting a PS4 to play this. Once again, the Wii U is holding me down tighter than a cougar on a young man while the PS4 is coming at me slower than a snail.
The Batmobile is less Batmobile and more Battank. It would be better as a temp substitute to the real Batmobile or a Batseige vehicle. Not sure about you Razor, but I was never a fan of the Bat Tumbler as a Batmobile.
