The world, the aesthetic, its like one of my dream games and its just frustrating that it came out the way it did. Some of these issues just cant be resolved through patches. First my condolences, losing someone is hard and happens far too often. May she rest in peace. Second I never saw a single trailer or the teasers before launch. I was informed the week of and bought the game on a whim. It’s my single favorite story based game I’ve ever played. I played the Witcher 3 later on but even then I never felt that same feeling of wonder that night City gave me. It was almost like the flaws made the game feel more humanized and such I cared about it more. (Long winded way to say coping hard)

    • @ColaDad

      I completely get you! I have the same feeling about Skyrim. The game is great... in 2011. And don't get me wrong, it holds up in some aspects, mostly to do with the world and immersion. But objectively speaking the game is a mess. The story is lackluster, the gameplay- simple and very meh without mods, and the bugs... I don't have anything to add about the bugs.
      But even with all that, Skyrim is my favourite game of all time! There is just nothing that has come close to the experience that IS SKYRIM for me. Elden Ring almost came close, but it was just too good and polished of a game to have that certain charm.
      I ahven't played cyberpunk yet, as I just don't have the hardware to run the damn thing, plus I wanted to wait until they polish it and release the DLC. But even while watching people bash the game, from the gameplay and story moments I have seen, I understand the peoples hate for the unfulfilled promise, but i don't share it. And this is coming from someone who pre-ordered the damn thing! (first and last time).
      In short, I think I'll like cyberpunk 2077, when I'll get to play it. It is simply a ''human'' game, if that makes sense.

    Second, I really think CP2077 has some of the best written and most believable characters in any game. The gameplay is fun but I would trade like 50% of the gigs and lots of the scanner hustles for a few more missions with Jackie, Dexter, Judy, Panam, Kerry, Johnny etc.

    • @iconoclast6555
      @iconoclast6555 Před rokem +18

      The gigs and the ncpd scanners are so underrated because most people do not read the shards or the computer conversations in them. When you realize that so many of the characters mentioned in those shards and computer convos can be met in the game and that they're connected, the sense of reward is great because it adds a lot to the world building of the game and makes night city so much more alive. But I would have loved more missions with the main characters of course, although the ones we got, especially with panam were pretty long.

    • @kukipett
      @kukipett Před rokem +9

      I don't agree with the characters, for example Jackie, his contents is really small and his personality one dimentional. You have a few scripted scenes and when it's in gameplay he is really a pain in the ass, blowing your cover, shouting like an idiot and not doing anything interesting.
      We love him at first but after a while i was happy that he was dead and just a good memory. Same with Johnny, he quickly becomes annoying with his mind locked in an Arasaka hatred. And the worst V, they wanted to make V as neutral as possible so everybody can have his V but in this way he or she is just a nobody, no past, no future and a shitty life being a dirty mercenary in a pile of crap. Maybe it's why they want him dead so he cannot come back in the future!
      Just compare with TW3 characters and it's just another world, it's hard to believe that the same people made the two games or maybe they were not the same, without the helps of The witcher books and background they just showed that they could not create a good working world.

    • @sinitall
      @sinitall Před rokem +1

      @@kukipett imo Jackie is one of the best written characters in the game because, while he's not that complex he doesnt have to be and shouldnt be, he's just a regular dude just another merc and ex-gangbanger nothing special and that's what he's supposed to be and even if they wanted to make him super complex(which they shouldnt) they didnt havev the time. Despite this he's not one-note, he still feels like a full, developed person with all his own intricacies and his own personality and character he feels *real* like someone you could get to know irl and befriend despite his character not being super special or complex. And on top of all this the writers were able to get the players to *love* him in the short time we had with him and really feel V's connection and friendship and closeness to him, and they were able to make him dying feel like a fucking shot. We probably dont even have 30 full minutes of dialogue with him and i fucking *cried* at his ofrenda and felt his loss.

  • @ralfpolland4669
    @ralfpolland4669 Před rokem +8

    To the point of Cyberpunk's main quest putting the player on a tight schedule and immersion breaking as you take your time with the side content, I really felt that when playing the game as well. Contrast that to the Witcher III where Geralt searching every inch of the world makes perfect sense as his main objective is to find Ciri who could be anywhere. I've always thought that the found the golden goose in making the main quest of an open world game "search the entire world".
    Another thing that bothered me a ton while playing cyberpunk was how you get to customize your character in any physical manner imaginable, even choose their backstory, but the game still forces V's personality/morality on the player. When walking around the map, I would often feel the only way to not commit at least quadrouple homicide at every street corner was to purposefully avoid engaging in the games marked content, in other words to not play the game. I wish I would have had the freedom to not play an almost indiscriminantly killing V given the game pretends to put the character of V in the players hands. It also doesn't seem right that there are seemingly no repercussions for killing anywhere from 30 to 70 gang members in a given in game day, but I guess the underworld bosses just can't be bothered.

You start off w an intro mission and then get shown a clips of your character and Jackie going around and completing jobs. It’s only after this that you get to start playing. I really don’t understand why they would make the most fun part of the game unplayable. It makes no sense. I 100% expected to come to night city and learn the ways of the people there, but all we got was an intro clip and a car. To add onto this, why does V not have any upgrades after all that time working with Jackie? It’s not like it’s a new technology…. Did Jackie never show V about upgrades until later on??? It’s very confusing that our character is apparently now familiar with the city, but we as a player still have no idea wtf is going on. When you play a game that is heavily story driven and played from your character perspective, I feel like I should be thinking the same things as my character. That intro video was so immersion breaking and disappointing. I remember first watching that cutscene and I just sat there dumbfounded. Like “why am I not playing, experiencing this with my character?” It’s one of the main reasons I can’t play the game. I feel like being able to play the very beginning of our journey in night city would be much better than delivering a guy with a faulty Dick implant (yes that’s a real mission)

    I too abandonned Night City shortly after the game released, later in the story tho. I also fully agree with your statement on the supposed "redemption ark". Hell no. They fixed some technical issues. Cool. FFXIV and No Man´s Sky, those game had redemption arks. Not this one, not in the slightest. However.. when I played through Cyberpunk last year with a bit different mindset, I actually had really good time. It was not the game we were promised, not at all but starting the game knowing that I am not playing the game I was waiting for, for 10 years, it allowed me to immerse myself into V much more. And in the end it actually gave me that satysfying, emotional conclusion that I hoped for. Combining Judy romance and Aldecaldos ending was.. bittersweet.

    instead of three weeks they should have given V either a year or 6 months. That would have solved alot of issues with the pacing and immersion. Lmao it's not that immersive where I only have three weeks to live but I decide to go racing with Claire or eat with River and his family like everything is fine.
    And they should have made a few side quests be main quests like the Rogue ones and maybe even Kerry's ones. Basically every side quest related to Johnny should have been in the main quest. If you choose to ignore the side quests you literally finish the game in a couple of hours which is so stupid.
    I dont agree with the small side missions though, I think that having them in the map made more sense because sometimes I dont really wanna explore for hours to find these small quests or have to search on the internet to find them so while I agree that it sometimes make these small interactions less memorable its much better than not coming across them at all in your game just because you didnt visit this random store.
    I do agree with most points in your video though. The way Witcher 3 made the contracts was much better than the way CP did the gigs even though they werent that terrible.

    I didn't do a lot of side content as I got bored of it, and mostly focused on the main story and the most important characters (like Panam). So I also want to replay it some time. But as one of my biggest disappointment was the driving and the police system, I'll wait until that is improved. The DLC looks to be very linear, more like an action shooter than an RPG, so not sure how interested I am in that. But as there are some amazing (hopefully) new RPGs coming out very soon, I'm in no rush to get back into Cyberpunk.

    Very good video. I appreciate and agree with most of your analysis of the vanilla game here. I never played it much tbh, bc like I do with most games, I quickly saw the things I didn't like and modded them. There's a limit ofc but between scissors, djkovric, rmk, e3rok, and many others, most of the issues you have with gameplay at least are made much better through mods.
    Game Time Tweaks for 1:1 timescale fixes the ticking clock aspect. Scissors Difficulty Options and Vehicle Combat mods make enemies and combat much more interesting. Daemon Netrunning, Better Netrunning, and No Scanner Time Dilation can make hacking builds much more challenging and fun. There are even some options to improve and expand romances with Judy, Panam, etc. that really add depth to that aspect.
    IMHO modding is such standard practice these days that it's silly to ignore it, especially when it's intended and supported by the game devs.

To be honest i was pretty blown away how everything was interconnected. Even the shards you find during basic hussles provide context and put larger peices of the puzzle together ting to other jobs. Had CDPR decided to not put a lot of this stuff on the map w/ an icon it would have had that much more impact. When the DLC drops I'm going to do a 3rd playthrough w/ the last life path i haven't did yet (street kid) and turn all the side content icons off.

I could sit with Panam and the Aldecaldos at that campfire for hours, drinking with River while glaring at Night City, getting away from it all spending time with Judy, or laying back listening to Kerry's peaceful riffs.
    But, as soon as it ends i get this familiar feeling of something akin to waking up from a dream. Im back in this world that just feels dead, a complete contrast to those moments. Everything feels like a checklist facilitated by a main plot that makes me feel guilty for even doing them.

    2:45 That also suprised me, the point of no return comes too quick. Of course I could get some bad endings but to get the good ones I had to do some more side missions. And after every side mission the " Meet Hanako at Embers" popped up again teasing me to " finsh" the story...

  • @stuamule
    @stuamule Před rokem +5

    Thank you for the fine review!
    I enjoyed CP very much on my two playthroughs and rate it among my favorite games. A lot of the characters and writing is simply amazing.
    I rarely had bugs playing on PC (only picked it up a year after launch though), nothing serious. All games have some clipping issues of course. It was never designed for last gen consoles obviously, that's why it failed so hard there.
    To your video:
    Yeah, the pacing and the awful "meet Hanako at Embers" you can't get rid off without a mod. Spot on. You get funneled into the worst ending first and discover the better ones later after doing the side quest lines. Aldecaldo ending (usually regarded as best) feels fake though, V is still dying and I'm not buying the "family will find a solution" thing.
    I have no issues with the fixer system. Imagine you get the call a day later after having done 10 other gigs - wouldn't work either.
    Quest markers vs discovery: most casual players won't spend time to explore every corner in a huge game like this, so I rather have a ! on the map than miss out on content.
    Of course many quests feel unfinished. One of the worst is when Rogue orders you to kill an arms dealer. I discovered a shard that she was being blackmailed with a family member of her held hostage. Reloaded and searched for a way to interact with and help her but - nope. You can't expect a game of that size to get really finished.
    Not all of the scanner hustles are that empty. There is one where the thugs had spread invitations to a party and robbed and murdered all the teenagers showing up, found that pretty depressing.
    You enjoyed the platonic relationship with Judy (one of the finest characters in any game, yeah!), I was pretty annoyed when I found out I couldn't romance Panam as Valerie. And used a mod for the next playthrough. Anyway it is sad that you can't repeat love scenes or even have any interactions after the quest.
    What you didn't mention - too many character creation options. I'm not a good character designer and my V fell flat compared to all the awesome NPCs. I'd rather have a fixed great char (female option of course) with just hair style, makeup, clothing etc. And you can style and dress her (transmog came way too late) but almost never see her because of silly first person view. Even in cutscenes - how hard could it have been to zoom out when you are sitting and talking so you can see yourself too?
    Now I'd like to start a new playthrough. 😀

    Thanks for the video. I was always sceptical about Cyberpunk supposedly being the "best game ever" before it released, but still decided to give it a try shortly after launch. One of the things I hated the most about Cyberpunk (when it worked) was how little your choices ever mattered. The way it was advertised and based on CDPR's previous titles, I expected to be able to roleplay in at least some fashion and make meaningful decisions. Playing that quest near the beginning of the game with the military contractor (Meredith? idr her name) showed me how shallow the choices were and that stuck with me as I kept playing and, time and time again, was shown that nothing I did mattered all that much. The fact that they had the "life paths" that did nothing but change a couple of starting quests and some dialogue options also immensely disappointed me. There were a lot of equally shallow mechanics in the game - some of which you talked about in the video - that just made me feel like the game was significantly worse than not only games that released up to 7 years prior but even CPDR's own previous releases.
    I technically finished the game - getting the quickest ending after meeting with Hanako - and by that point I was just sort of done. I didn't come across the side quests you said were the best content in the game, so maybe that would have slightly improved my opinion of the game. At the same time, I didn't have to seek out side quests to get a huge amount of enjoyment out of the Witcher 3 and the side quests I did complete in the Witcher 3 were all really good to amazing. Cyberpunk's side content wasn't nearly as good nor as consistent, in my opinion.

    • @paz1514
      @paz1514 Před rokem

      You do have choices that matter though. In smallers ways sure but it also goes with the whole Cyberpunk theme of your choices ultimately don't matter. At least in the grand scheme of things. In the Witcher you have the ability to replace kings cause that's who you are in the fantasy setting. Who are you in the Cyberpunk setting ? A nobody with no say for anything, maybe not even your self. Thats the point. It makes the little changes you do make stand out. Not to mention one of the endings has you topple a megacorp so there is your big choice consequence right there. And I find it super odd you did not do any of the side jobs in a rpg...but wanna talk about shallow rpg mechanics...huh ..anyway. This game is no different than Skyrim. If you love Skyrim but wanna act like this is the biggest disappointment ever then I question a few things about you

    • @echo.1209
      @echo.1209 Před rokem

      @@paz1514 I didn't say I didn't do any of the side quests, I said I didn't specifically do the couple he listed as being the best the game had to offer. I often play through the main story of a game first and do side content that I naturally stumble upon. In Cyberpunk's case, the game ran so terribly and was so lacklustre that I never bothered to play it a second time to delve deeper into the side content. A lot of the side content I did do was apparently the "bad stuff", like the races and the "bad gigs".
      When I say "your choices don't matter", I don't necessarily mean you need to be able to "topple kings". And I don't personally count different endings - ones that come about because of some choice at the very end of a game - to count, either. It doesn't make me feel like my choices mattered if the only choice that matters is the final one. You simply go to Hanako and if you did meet some criteria you can select an option and get a different ending. In The Witcher 3, your choices were affecting the game in the background. The little decisions you made along the way - especially about Ciri - decided her and other's fate. It wasn't just a dialogue option at the end of the game. The other kind of choices I care about are branching quests. In The Witcher 3, there were often many branching ways to complete a quest. In Cyberpunk, I tried doing things differently, and at most I got slightly different combat and quest rewards. The first Meredith quest and the questline in Pacifica are prime examples of this.
      I'm not sure why you suggest I would have to do plenty of side content to experience RPG mechanics. Those mechanics should be baked into the game and present in everything I do, not stuffed away in some specific side quests. I'm also not really sure why you bring up Skyrim or think I'd love Skyrim. Skyrim is another great example of a bad RPG. It is a decent exploration game and is fun to just run around the world in, unlike Cyberpunk, but it ultimately suffers from a lot of what Cyberpunk does. Witcher 3 set the bar high, but surely you can agree Cyberpunk did not even come close to it.

      @@echo.1209 i'm confused, you say that "choices don't matter" doesn't necessarily refer to multiple endings, but you cite ciri's relationship as a contrary example.
      ...when ciri's relationship only really manifests in...the ending. i encourage you to treat her nicely and like an asshole and directly compare her interactions before the ending. the actual dialogue is identical.
      but similar to cyberpunk, the choices are 'meaningful' because we care about the characters and how our decisions impact them.

      @@echo.1209 I mostly agree with you, I have about the same ~600-ish hours in both games and it's clear that TW3 has more story content and a bit more agency. Pawel Sasko talked about why there is less branching in Cyberpunk and the main reason is the decision to use FPP instead of cutscenes. They couldn't make highly varied outcomes and change the scenes drastically (like end up somewhere else physically in the quest) because everything is real time and you can move in the scene. In the Witcher 3 they could get away with cheap tricks which allowed them to produce much more content, like teleporting characters, not rendering their legs when they stand behind an object, which means they don't have to rig animations for the NPC, changing time and weather, etc. In Cyberpunk they needed to spend much more time developing a single scene or set because you can walk in it.
      However I don't understand why you are bringing up The Pickup (Meredith quest) as an example for shallow outcomes because that's literally one of, if not the most varied quests in the game. Your task is to get the Flathead. You can achieve this by so many ways:
      Without contacting meredith:
      1) You buy it with your own money: Maelstrom remains neutral (in their own way I guess :D ), path of least resistance.
      2) You kill Royce: you fight against the Maelstromers, no Militech at the end
      Both options will result in Meredith failing her job and getting herself killed, Gilchrist promoted
      With contacting meredith:
      3) You buy it with your own money after you take the cred chip from Meredith: Meredith tracks you, Militech tracks meredith, you fight together against Militech, Meredith is killed offscreen and Gilchrist is promoted, you talk to Gilchrist in the end.
      4) You pay with Meredith's chip: Royce notices the chip being infected, but too late because Meredith gets the data she needed. You fight against the Maelstrom. Bossfight against Royce, Meredith will be waiting at the exit and romance option will be unlocked. However if you told Royce that the chip is infected, 3) will play out instead
      5) You remove the virus from the chip and pay with it: 3) will play out. Since Meredith didn't get the data she needed again, she will be killed offscreen and Gilchrist will be waiting for you.
      6) You shoot Royce: Almost the same as 2). If you cracked the chip it's the same, but if you didn't, Meredith will be waiting in the end because she tracked you and considers the job done. The romance option will be unlocked.
      - If you take the credship and crack it but not use it, you will be able to claim the 10k from your inventory
      - If you save brick in any of these endings, he'll be the leader (endgame quest)
      - If you don't save Brick and kill Royce (or let him get killed by militech) in any of these endings, Patricia will become the new leader (endgame quest)
      - this quest I'm talking about will also play out differently based on who's the leader (Second Conflict)
      There are several items that you can achieve based on some conditions:
      - if you romance meredith you get Sir John Phallustiff (melee dildo)
      - if Dum Dum survives this quest, you can get Doom Doom (revolver) later
      - If you kill Royce you can loot Chaos (handgun) from him
      - If you take a whiff of Dum Dum's drug, or you are on the streetkid path and remain peaceful towards the maelstrom he'll give it to you (it's black lace)
      I think that this insane wall of text itself proves my point.

    great review, great analysis of the state of cyberpunk from my impression atleast.
    coming from one that only had very slight bugs on launch.
    love to hear more reviews from you.

    2:20 finally I'm not alone with this feeling. People all over the internet are praising the character writing in this game and yet when I played it for the very first time the story and relations between V and other characters felt awkward at least, and I was doing the side quests as well. For example the relationship with Panam, lore wise you literally know her for 3 days and suddenly the relationship seems like V and Panam have known each other for years. I played through the most important side quests (Kerry, River, Panam, Judy) and upon seeing the point of no return I thought 'this cant be it' and when I realized that I just beat the game in about 20-25 hours I uninstalled without even going through the ending. The characters are just empty for me, and their relationships forced and rushed, which os quite unfortunate as the world itself has huge potential and amazing lore

      The only way V and Panam have chemistry is when V comes from the Nomad lifepath, but everyone seems to prefer making disturbing self insert ships with Panam.

    I agree, had you not been aware of the attack on the store it would have been more fun. As I recently bought the game and now have had that ruined for me, maybe you should include spoiler warnings. I am really enjoying the game.
    Also, sorry about your loss. Sincerely.
