    Good mention about the ground. The Cub riders are the same. The ground circuit of the regulator goes through the regulator case. If the attachment bolts are loose or there is corrosion build up, the system won't charge. When troubleshooting I like to run a jumper wire from the case to the battery - terminal to be sure. Good vid. Cheers.

    Thank you, just got a used poulan that didn't have a key. It runs but battery not charging. I'll be checking the wires that used to hook up to the key switch (that isn't there) first. You got me going in the right direction 👍

    My Cub Cadet with the Kohler Command engine had the problem you described! The rectifier was not grounding properly through the plastic cowl mounting.

    I've had two different Kohler Command engines (1996, 97) that weren't charging. Coil resistance in the stator was near normal, but no AC voltage at at RPM. WTF??
    Turns out the flywheel had sheds its magnets, and though it was turning, the magnets weren't. That's a $180~210 part from Kohler.
    I found one of Taryl's videos showing me how to glue them back in place with JB Quikweld. Worked like a charm.

      And a friend had a Craftsman rider with Kohler engine that the stator measured open (infinite resistance) with the ohmmeter. Pulled the flywheel to find it had somehow worn through one of the wires from the stator. Nice, neat butt connection and heat shrink and fixed as good as new.

    Thanks for sharing Bob. Great video as always. I just had a problem Friday on one of our mowers I thought i had a bad regulator or something because it had been starting and running fine with know issues went to start it and nothing just a click the battery had gone bad checked and mower was charging between 13 and 24 volts so I guess my battery just decided to die. LOL Hope the family is doping well. Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

    Quick question, you said 30 volts ac coming out of the stator but yours read like 19.4. My riding mower is reading like 17.8. I've heard other people say it should be like 30 volts coming out of the stator. I wonder if why you weren't reaching 14 to 16 volts was because the stator is partially defected? Maybe a loose Magnet or two? I'm not sure.
    I think I'll replace my voltage regulator and see what happens since it did help yours.

    • @headpainter1
      @headpainter1 Před 2 lety

      Well I think I just answered my own question. I pulled my flywheel this morning and all of the magnets were stuck to the stator and not to the flywheel where they were supposed to be. I clean them up and JB welded them back on the flywheel. Put it back together tomorrow and see what I can get. I'm just surprised I was getting 17.8 volt AC out of stator.

    • @headpainter1
      @headpainter1 Před 2 lety

      Put it back together today, cranked it, got 48 volts a/c from stator but no improvement from regulator, but it's on order.

    • @headpainter1
      @headpainter1 Před 2 lety +2

      Attention anyone listing if you choose to reglue your magnets to your flywheel make sure they alternate polarisation. Don't just glue them willy-nilly. Do some research. You've been warned.

    • @headpainter1
      @headpainter1 Před 2 lety +2

      New regulator installed today. That dropped the stator output to 29.3 a/c volts, center terminal on regulator reads 15.33 vdc, and at battery reads 13.95 vdc. Looks like that fixed it.
      Thanks for your video. Definitely helped point me in the right direction.

    Thx for this information. Awesome
    Just found schematic on manufacturer website...
    Does anyone have a schematic. I just picked up a cub 1080 and I see wires cut, the seller said jump the solinoid with screwdriver to start. And he said lights don't work etc .. anyway, I'm ready to get this guy tomorrow and stay working on it. Can't wait! I've been using a push mower for 5 years now on my 3/4 acre yard and I've gone through 2 push mowers. Not because of the yard but because they were junk mowers from home Depot China.
    Anyway, I'm ready to repair this dude
