  • In May 2016, Stevie and Linus leave the city stuck in the past, Nueva Gerona, Cuba. They go through the poorly charted, but well marked Pasa de Quitasol into the Gulfo de Bantabano after departing the Isla de Juventud, Cuba. After a two-day sail upwind in the Gulfo de Bantabano, Stevie and Linus tie up at the Marina at Cayo Largo del Sur. Cayo Largo, Cuba is a beach resort catering to international tourists on the Caribbean Sea. Linus films the entrances to the Marina as well as the Caribbean Sea entrance at the Canal del Rosario. Linus tours the resort and shows the good and the bad. The lack of potable water poses a problem, and the showers are pretty rough. Stevie and Linus enjoyed the magnificent Playa Sirena with the best beach bar in all of Cuba. They anchor off for several days. The turtle sanctuary and the Taberna are must stops too.

There is electricity and floating docks at the marina. It is very well protected. You can count on being able to beer and soft drinks ashore, but the other provisioning options are hit and miss. The marina water is NOT potable. There is a bank which changes money and a cigar shop. 4 CUC dinners and 1 CUC beers can be had at the Taverna. 1 CUC = $1.13. Cayo Largo, Cuba mostly has charter boats coming in from Cienfuegos to the marina. Cruising boats are rare in the middle of the south coast, the Caribbean side, of Cuba. There is an airport, but when we were there charter flights were the only way on or off and could not be booked easily without an agent. There is no ferry for tourists to the mainland. Most of the Cubans live in Nueva Gerona and come by ferry for several days to work.
I recommend that you buy NV Charts' chart books for the region of Cuba you are sailing to. Garmin charts are terrible. Navionics are bad but a little better. NV Charts are OK. Nigel Calder's Cuba A Cruising Guide is dated but has some good anchorage charts.
