2020 Skoda Octavia: Here's why it's the best car Skoda build

  • The 2020 Skoda Octavia follows a familiar path to its predecessors in that it's larger than a Volkswagen Golf while also being cheaper to buy. Rebecca Jackson happens to think that it might just be better than a Volkswagen Golf as well. In this CarGurus UK review she explains what makes the 2020 Octavia such a brilliant car.

    Have to say as an owner the car is a pleasure to drive. Comfortable and very quiet. That's the 1.5 petrol manual 6 speed and SE first Edition. Can't say I've noticed any body roll and it runs smoothly round corners feeling very safe and refined.

    • @Spartanm333
      @Spartanm333 Před 9 měsíci

      Agree - no body roll on my 2018 1.5 TSi SE hatchback. It will understeer in corners if not driven properly - the trick is to go into a corner easy and at the apex feed in the power - the nose will then tuck in and stick like glue, even in the damp.
      However, if you go too fast into a bend on an A road at 50/60 mph and then back off mid bend , the Octavia will understeer to the offside (UK) which may be considered roll but it isn't, it's simply poor driving and the nature of front wheel drive cars designed not to throw the tale out when you cock things up.
      I've come from a 2.0 LTR 150 BHP Subaru Impreza AWD hatchback to the Octavia and I can say it is much more refined - quiet, less engine / tyre / gearbox noise, light gear change, willing turbo with little lag at low revs and love the interior spec including crusie and Apple car play / charging. I have the Winter pack also so heated seats etc .
      It's a lovely car and as we all know, VAG in all important respects... for a lot less money than a Golf or an Audi.

    Here is the thing... the Octavia is objectively better than a Golf and Is certainly better value ... but having had both a mark 7 and a 7.5 Golf GTI, I would never even consider a change. It is all about what appeals and the Golf is for many folk a more appealing package...hence the residuals.

    • @aakeister
      @aakeister Před 3 lety +5

      It’s a different market segment, golf is too small for my two golden retrievers lol. Golf is fine for short journeys, town work and racing off traffic lights, but for overall use the Octavia is much better

    • @douglasb.5601
      @douglasb.5601 Před 3 lety

      I used to have a Mk5 Golf gti and then had 2 small boys with prams travel cots etc....I was stuck until I found the Octavia VRS. It was so good I kept it for 8 years with not one problem. I replaced it with a Porsche Macan S diesel which had DPF issues so replaced that with an Audi S3 as I no longer required such a big boot. The quality of the Skoda matched the other 2. I don't think the latest Octavia's are quite as well made or look as good as the MK2 facelift version that I owned. Skoda make great cars though...and I would never put the brand down.

    • @Spartanm333
      @Spartanm333 Před 9 měsíci

      I have it on reliable information that Skoda engineers were reprimanded and ordered to tone down the Octavia VRS by VAG management a couple of years ago as it was impacting hot Golf sales. The Golf (and Polo GTi) are overpriced and rely on folk who want the badge 'appeal'. That doesn't make it a better package at all - the engines are the same, the infotainment and electronics virtually the same, the options huge on the Octavia range (I have the Winter pack with heated everything, cruise, voice control) and it has a bigger boot and is more practical - how exactly is a Golf a better package?

  • @kindzadza134

    I am currently driving the previous Skoda Octavia (2018, the facelift) as a company car and I am absolutely delighted on how much space it has and how practical it is, especially for it's price. It looks like the new one is even better, simply no-brainer buy if you are looking for practical family/company car for under 25 kEUR (the prices here start from about 21 kEUR)

This car is going to be popular company car, not as much as family car because many prefer SUV´s nowadays. It's also not the no-brainer anymore price wise. It's rather expensive compared to several competitors like the Ford Focus and Renault Megane. Other than that no complaints. It looks reasonably good, interior looks great, it's comfortable and the ride is good.

Only negative is that when you turn the weel sometimes you accidentally rotate the silver rocker and change the middle display.

    I’ve had my 1.5SEL for about 15 months and am pleased with it. Comfortable, responsive engine and good value for money. There are one or 2 niggles however. The Lane control is annoying, it should be off and then you can switch it on instead of the other way round. I did speak to the local dealer and he showed me a simple way to switch it off.
    The other thing that annoys me is the electric handbrake when I am going through a car wash. I don’t think you can switch the engine off whilst going through, otherwise the brake comes on! Anyone know any different?

The only slight complaint I guess is when it's on 10-20 mile roads with humps its not the smoothest, could have done with the slightly better suspension system - I guess L&K version wont have the problem but that's a lot of money

    • @Spartanm333
      @Spartanm333 Před 9 měsíci

      The SEL and above has multi-link suspension from 2017 facelift. To be honest it does nothing to improve the handling, just smooths out bumps a little more on bad roads. Also if you get the higher spec models, they tend to have the bigger 17" alloys / lower aspect ratio tyres which increases road noise and harshens the ride... so the SE (with 16" x 6J 205 / 55 ) really is the sweet spot for comfort.

    I just bought the Octavia 1,5 petrol style edition manual. It's great, I love it!

      Manual? Are you still in stoned age?

      @@bevardoss Nope, I would love to buy Dsg but there is only in 2.0 diesel octavia and quite expensive for me. Manual is better for me though, cause I like to have complete control of the car vs complete comfort. After a decade maybe I'll buy automatic.

      @@bevardoss Ever heard of the concepts of personal preference and comfort zone? Men can be as comfortable with manual as with automatic

    Dimensions of the boot-space of the Octavia Estate iV would be useful. Thanks.

    The only thing Škoda sacrifices is branding - i.e. its not Audi or BMW. Everything else is better for the same amount of money. As an Audi driver, must say that Škoda simply offers more in the same price range

    Would be great to see you review something a bit more exciting, or both you and Dan do some group tests in performance cars. I hear you're a pretty handy driver but you only ever seem to review the boring stuff. 🏎😁

    Rebecca, have you checked how this Skoda Octavia did in the Swedish Elg slalom test? It disipointed there...

    • @MrCatlover
      @MrCatlover Před 3 lety

      @Brian Bickle LOL. Not exactly, but that slalom test is a good indicating of the cars road holding capabilities if you drive fast through the bends! You may suspect that VW does not like a Skoda to handle as well as an Audi!

    • @MrCatlover
      @MrCatlover Před 3 lety

      @Brian Bickle Yes, I would expect less costly repairs with a Skoda than an Audi. It would be fun though if Skoda built racing car from scratch that could beat Audi!
