Okay, the silly story telling, I can understand. The usual oddly stilted deliveries can be forgiven, but for M. Night to have the gall to place himself in this story unironically as the savior of the world and how critics are just shallow, unfeeling sad people with absolutely no nuance to it is why I 100% do not feel bad that his career took a big slump later. He really needed to restrain that ego before he came back into the directing and writing world. I could understand people liking this movie somehow, but giving a pass to such blatant auto-fellatio is where I draw the line.

There is a quote from an interview of Shamalan in which he complains that "American critics don't get me, but I go to Europe and they're like, 'GENIUS!'"
I find this quote fascinating for two reasons. First of all, I have looked into this a couple times and I can't find evidence that it is true outside of the interview in question. so that's suspicious. Second of all, even if it is true, it just shows that Shamalan is more concerned about stroking his own ego than making good art. He finds the one group that likes him, so he insists that they are the only ones that "get" him instead of trying to understand the criticism he receives.

He has four primary periods to his career thus far:
      1) The smash hit of The Sixth Sense and a handful of follow-ups that were similar enough that the many people who loved TSS for its secondary twist and thriller aspects and not for its primary aesthetic and message also liked the others enough for them to be successful
      2) As his films became less like TSS, continued dissatisfaction with that fact ate away at the huge amount of good will and cache TSS had created, rapidly eroding his reputation
      3) Cache now largely gone, he was tabbed for a tentpole adaptation (The Last Airbender) instead of his usual original work of his own story, and it was a disaster. That torpedoed any draw he had left, and so he actually was left for a while unable to make movies. He was so shunned at that point that the best he could do after a few empty years was a Will Smith nepotism project for Smith's son (After Earth), which as predictably awful and not actually an MNS film. This was rock bottom for him.
      4) With no other options, he put his own money on the line to finance The Visit, which also got passed up by all of Hollywood before distribution before he balanced the tone of the film in editing. Its surprising success and partial departure from his usual work got his arrow pointing upwards again, and his next film Split was a major success too. That has gotten his ball rolling again enough that he has some margin for error in making films, and we'll see how Old is received.

Tbh if you leave out the context of M. Night being in this movie this movie is actually a really nice modern fairy tale and I enjoy it for that. Just as the village isn't a horror movie (how it was promoted), but a drama. Sometimes you see something in movies that critics/the majority do not like and sometimes you can't understand why movies get high ratings. What is important that this movie brings you joy (or tears in that case bc i feel you about that scene) you're allowed to like it and should not be ashamed.

This movie is one of my favourite movies of all time because it plays into the ideas of story writing. The unwritten rules and the pure imagination. It does feel like it's being made up as it goes along, but I love that about it. It reminds me so strongly of the stories my dad used to tell me before bed that he would make up and it has a lot of sentimental attraction for me for that reason. I love it so much.

    • @redsoxu571
      @redsoxu571 Před 2 lety +3

Depends. If your feelings for his films are that The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable are fantastic and it goes downhill hard from there (perhaps with some room for Signs), yeah, avoid this. If, however, you loved Signs as much as those first two as well as at least The Village then you should check this out. Most people I think went to see post-Sixth-Sense M. Night films for the wrong reasons (for the thriller and twist elements), wrong in that those are framing elements for his films and not their core or purpose. If you go for the reasons at the center of why they were made, you might "get" what this was going for and enjoy it on those terms.
I see you said that you love M. Night, in that case it might work for you. First thing to know is that it is an intended fairy tale and so is not meant to be subtle or "real". The second thing to know is that it is filled with a lot of heart and isn't remotely cynical; if you watch it when you're in the mood for those kinds of things (usually because you'd like to be a little uplifted), you'll have some laughs and you'll be satisfied by the film's outcome and the resolution for the main protagonist.
If you don't like the idea of a fairy tale made as described above and intended to target children first while still offering something for the adult audience, yeah, don't bother. But if you enjoy the typical M. Night aesthetic, exposition, quiet moments, etc, it has all of that as usual and in a good way.

As if that wasn't enough it also stars Andie Macdowell, as the love interest who, twist, is actually a nun working for the Vatican to stop the plot. All of this being orchestrated by Sandra Bernhard who somehow manages to spit out the best villain monologue through pieces of the set she is chewing into mulch. @@Kelarys Signs is probably the best litmus test for whether a person "gets" an MNS film or not (no judgement either way). Like Signs or not, if what stands out to you is aliens in the field, a house under attack, etc, yeah, his movies will be VERY hit or miss for you. If, however, you pick up that the alien invasion is really window dressing for a film about the loss and renewal of faith (it's telling that the typical showing of the film on TV will usually speed up the very final mini-scene of Gibson's character getting dressed in the bedroom) and find the "miracle man" conversation between the two brothers to be one of the best scenes of the film, yeah, you understand what MNS is really aiming for in his films.
I'm hard pressed to pick a favorite film of his, because most of the ones I really like are loaded with merits. But, if I were told they would all be erased except for one, I would probably pick to save The Village out of all of them, while wondering why the heck I was being forced to make such a decision, haha.

I'm angry and confused by this movie. Thank you for bringing some levity to it.

That's kind of the mistake people made (blame the marketing) when it came to this...it was intentionally filled with levity, but most people went to see it for the next MNS thriller and so were baffled by it.

"Man is too busy having wars." That sounds like a nice excuse. We can clearly see that it's because the water people suck at their job; they failed; they bailed.

    few sins you missed
    - why is giamatti diving while fully dressed?
    - even if he took his clothes of, why is he diving in the first place? why didn't ge just wait by the pool until whoever is in the pool gets out? it would literally take less than 5 minutes...

Honestly my favorite because this movies is messed up. What's worse is when we saw this in the theater we were confused af. We noticed all the weird camera angles but then we also kept seeing boom mics in various shots, crew walking through scenes, messed up audio.
