  • This is the first of a small video series I will do breaking down the difference between Giant's three most popular gravel bikes. This video focuses on introducing the bikes and doing a quick geometry break down of the bikes to better understand how they may handle. Future videos will be on tire clearance, gravel rides, road characteristics and road group rides.

      @@BlackWaterCyclist Sounds like everyone is okay though which is good! I actually have a question for ya though. I am getting my girlfriend an 2020 Liv Avail 1 equipped with Sora and rim brakes. What do you think the max tire clearance is for that bike? @BlackWaterCyclist  Před 4 lety +1

      @@devynshaver7489 Yes everyone was ok thankfully. Usually the largest tire a rim brake bike can take is about 28c due to the brakes having to go around the tire to compress the rims. Sometimes a 30c can fit in the newer shimano rim brakes if the frame allows it. With disc brake, that limitation is removed and it only comes down to the fork and frame clearance. I hope that helps.

    Great video. I stumbled across your video and it was perfect.
    I currently have a 2018 tcx slr with g one tires 35c and a 2019 giant revolt advanced with 38c tires. My question is would the new AR 1 be worth it as far as gaining speed on the road and going up hills than my other 2 bikes? Not sure it it would be enough of a difference or thinking about selling the tcx to purchase the AR. I would continue to use the revolt for all around riding and AR for 75% road, would it be faster than the tcx on the road?
    On a side note I just bought my son the AR 2 because of other video, he loves it and the blue is gorgeous

      If you could go with the Contend AR for not much more money than selling the TCX SLR, then I would go with the Contend AR.

      Hi Manuel, sorry for the delay. That is a great question! It really depends on the type of gravel racing you will be doing. If you were doing something like the Dirty Kanza, I would say the Revolt hands down. If you are doing shorter Gravel races that are pretty smooth with some rough stuff but not too gnarly, the Contend AR. If you had a race that was shorter and had some real gnarly stuff, maybe the TCX with some 45c tires in it. There are so many different gravel events that it really depends on what you ride mostly. All three of these bikes could get the job done, just depends on the feel you are going after.

    I have been looking at getting a bike to commute to work and back on, and do some dirt roads etc. never ridden a road bike b4, always had mountain bikes. I test rode a revolt advanced in a Large, and it felt too small, and the store owner said it looked too small for me, and I also test rode a Contend SL in a Large and it felt like a good size to me it felt quite a bit larger than the revolt Adv, so I ended up ordering a Contend AR in a Large (because the dimensions for the SL and AR were the same in the book). I'm 191cm tall, with an inseam of 90cm, and weigh 98kg. So I'm right between Large and XL, do you think the Contend AR in Large will be correct for me? I'm worried now knowing that the SL and AR are actually different dimensions.

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Jesse, Actually the large SL and AR are pretty close in dimensions and the AR has a very slightly longer top tube, only by .5 cm, which is good for you being 191cm. I'm 187cm and ride the Large so I think you are good with your sizing. You could have gone with either size. The revolt is the one that is very different than the others so you are good with your decision 👍. Let me know what you think after getting it.

      Hi Safina, the 1 has Sram 1x11 set up while the 2 has the Shimano 105 2x11 set up. I would say that the 1 is strictly for gravel mainly due to the 1x set up. If you plan to do road rides with your revolt where you may throw on some other wheels with smaller road tires, I would say go with the 2 so you have the wider range of gears with tighter spacing between gears for those faster road rides. I love 1x on dirt but when speeds go higher, the 2x set up is much better in my opinion. I hope that helps.

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před 4 lety +1

      @@safinas5805 I see now. If you were to go with the Revolt 1, I would just go with the Contend AR 2 which is the same build but it has a carbon seatpost verses the alloy on the revolt which adds comfort. It can clear 40c tires and it has a little bit more of a road Geo that's great with road tires and with the larger tires it adds stability. The revolt 2 has a very basic crankset and groupset. I think the reliability will be similar between all the models honestly as long as you take care of the bike. I know that's not a definitive answer but in my opinion the higher end revolt is not worth the extra money. If you go with the high end revolt, then I would just go with the Contend AR 2. • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Javier, that is a great question and I appreciate you asking. The main reason I went over the geo of the bikes was just to discuss the background of how they handle. The TCX has a 20mm taller bb than the Contend AR. That's pretty significant when it comes to pedal strikes. Also the chainstay is about 8mm shorter on the Contend. The Revolt has a slack 70 degree head tube angle vs steeper 72.5 of both the tcx and contend. So there are some differences in there that may rule one bike out for someone based on those small but important differences. The reach and stack aren't much different between the three bikes but I was focusing more on the other areas that I have mentioned. Does that help? Thanks again for asking and you didn't come off condescending or insulting.
