The way Thrawn realizes that Anakin trained Ahsoka was really natural. It's a realization that forces him to switch gears and take careful planning against an enemy known for unpredictable but successful plans.
Hence the "we must control every variable to favor our outcome." In other words, "luck favors the prepared." And it showed later on in the episode.
It's also subtle how Thrawn immediately asks if there was only 1 starship. Whenever Vader arrives to settle something personal, he always comes by himself in his TIE interceptor, just like Ahsoka in this scene.

Thrawn's thoughts: Oh, this is going to be irritating in *unpleasantly specific* ways.
He just knows any apprentice Anakin trained will be highly volatile emotionally and thus unpredictable. That man was having flashbacks of Clone Wars the moment he saw Anakin's name.
Not just volatile, but incredibly direct, bringing a mixture of power and a little cunning to bear. She's going to be direct, efficient, and if that fails, get creative in ways that are very unpredictable.
I love it when the villain/antagonist _realizes_ how much trouble the heroes are going to be!

I like that you can tell that thrawn becomes instantly more cautious once he learns who is her master and starts to plan around that fact

But this cartoon version of Thrawn is a complete idiot. He gets defeated by everyone. Preparring for a ground assault meant ... NOTHING. They fired guns and none of the actually scored a hit. How about locking and barring the gates? Or mining the ground under the ship? How about launching more than 2 fighters? How about actually destroying the whales upon reemergence? How about the troopers actually firing on Ashoka and Sabine when their backs are turned? (happens like a hundred times). Basically, this show is a badly written, hurried season 5 of Rebels, with live action.

Beskar armor protects Sabine a lot. And trying to shoot at a Jedi is almost never useful unless you have truly insane levels of overwhelming firepower. He realized Ahsoka is no ordinary Jedi as soon as he realized who her Master was. Everything she learned about the Force, Combat, Strategic thinking, etc. was from Anakin/Vader’s teachings which made her almost as dangerous as Vader.

@@juicemann6902in all fairness due to his age and disillusion with the Jedi order, he’s basically the dooku of his time. Plus he’s physically much larger than Ashoka which gives him an edge in physical combat like saber training. While her master was better than him, he has many more years experience.

For those unfamiliar, the Thrawn: Alliances book delved into a mission where Thrawn and Anakin teamed up during the Clone Wars. The book also teased that Thrawn suspected Darth Vader and Anakin were one and the same - and there's a pretty great last minute reveal about Force-sensitive Chiss that confirm it.
I would not say he suspected it as he was literally trolling Vader with it.. like saying to him multiple times that "When we were the last time here" and Vader always corrected him that he was never there before
At the end of "Aliances" Thrawn says to Vader "I know"!

Thrawn is that nice middle ground of "how much is legends lore?" and "how much is Disney lore?" Unlike many, I find this game amusing rather than insulting. More so I get to giggle at those who don't know the difference. ie we don't get Mara Jade, and Luke dies mostly a virgin hermit, but this is a nice consolation prize. Cause tentacled Giant Space Whale doom is always better than looking at your former body guard and dying with "At least he did it artistically...." As Zahn turned Rhuk into what the Wookies (and Ewoks) should have been but still somehow failed to make them a lasting impression.
Side note it was Lucas who HATED..... Thrawn, as anti-hero's are lost on the minds of children...... Unless your name is Vader.

I love how calmly Thrawn calls for Captain Enoch. And instantly and without hesitation Enoch appears. Thrawn deserves such loyalty. I want him to win.

I LOVED Thrawn: Alliances because of the "Bros to enemies to bros" relationship between Thrawn and Anakin/Vader. They have very snarky dialogues, as Thrawn brings Anakin up again and again and Vader completely denies it. This is one close to the end, where the tone is more nostalgic:
“For a long moment, they stood together in silence. Vader thought about his secret... about Thrawn's loyalty... about the Emperor's continued need for him. Perhaps the entire Empire's need for him... "Anakin Skywalker is dead," he said.
Thrawn lowered his head. "I know."
Vader nodded slowly. *I know.* Not *So I have heard.* Not *So I was informed.* But *I know.* "We will not speak of him again," he said. "*You* will not speak of him again."
"I understand, my lord," Thrawn said. "But I will always honor his legacy.”

@@commodorezero Probably not. Sure, he had a lot of respect for Anakin, and maybe a certain degree of comrade-ship if not friendship, but Thrawn is ultimately working to protect his people, and if Luke got in the way of that, I don't think he'd hesitate
Seeing Thrawn genuinely concerned and intimidated is quite something but makes sense because he's smart he knew how completely unpredictable and dangerous vader was and now knows that is her master and now he knows she is and how much of a legit threat not only to his plans to his life because she is even more unpredictable then him and just as dangerous.

I love Lars Mikkelsen's performance as Thrawn. His polite, soft-spoken, calm, composed but confident demeanour carries a great deal of charisma.
I also love this scene and his writing here in general. There is great subtlety in his reaction to who Ahsoka's master was. He barely changes his tone, but you can still see how he's thinking "okay, this could be trouble". And then, thinking quick and smooth he shakes up his strategy.

It was confirmed at Star Wars Celebration in April, where Lars Mikkelsen also came out on stage to roaring, standing applause. So yeah. Been very much confirmed since then. I was there. It was unbelievable. As a Dane myself like Lars, I cheered as loud as I could. We are very proud of him.
I like that small pause of shock/interest Thrawn has when he realizes who trained Ahsoka. He realized that his opponent is more dangerous than he anticipated.
I like that they have used the actor that voiced Thrwan during Rebels... That accent and way of talking made the character unique
I didn't realize how tall Lars Mikkelsen was until he shared a scene with Ray Stevenson. Ray Stevenson was one of the tallest and most physically imposing actors in Hollywood yet he's slightly shorter than Lars.

Yup, Thrawn knows better than to go after Ahsoka. Him and Anakin worked great together, even when Thrawn knew Vader was Anakin when they were on mission together looking for "Sky Walkers". He knows Ahsoka was well-trained and that Anakin was very thorough with Ahsoka.
It's more thrawn knows it's pointless to chase her, he has to leave waste time and forces on Ahsoka is pointless to his objective
Mostly, Thrawn doesn't want to risk taking on Ahsoka and Ezra directly. It'd be an unnecessary battle. He's been defeated by Ezra once before, and he knows how dangerous Ahsoka could be.
That's why he's just buying time, hoping to win by simply stranding them. It's the most efficient and risk-averse strategy. He learned from his overconfidence at Lothal.

Thrawn was defo aware who Anakin is. Who he was. And who he became.
I wonder if any part of thrawn would be happy when he learned of anakins brief return and that he killed the emperor. Thrawn knew Vader’s identity, but you could tell in the books he was sad that the Jedi he has befriended had been consumed by Vader. Thrawn is too smart to say it out loud, but I feel like part of him would be happy to learn his old friend really had been in there all along.
The man really respected Anakin. He had to take a step back and change strategy right away lol.

Here, Thrawn's goal was to go back home, so he chose to strand Ahsoka & co. instead of trying his best to kill her. Morgan's job was to delay her, and if she killed Ahsoka, great. If she got killed Thrawn's mission would still be a success.

Thrawn's strategic decisions after learning this can be viewed through a somewhat comedic lens: he 200% does not want to deal with Skywalker Bullshit, be it inherent or learned. Just one problem though: he escaped from one enemy who practices Learned Skywalker Bullshit into the stomping grounds of not one but two with Inherent capacity for Skywalker Bullshit.
If you’ve read the canon thrawn books, those two have indeed met.
I like that Thrawn took a moment to reflect on Anakin. I think that, in a sense, Thrawn was Anakin’s opposite. Had Thrawn been assigned to Vader, oh damn… the Rebel Alliance would’ve defeated.

When Thrawn said “you’re certain there was only the one star ship” was he implying that Luke might have joined Ashoka in her quest? Considering this is right after he finds out that Anakin (Vader) was her master, who else would he be referring to other than his son who was pivotal in the fall of the Empire.

When I heard him say “you’re certain there was only one star ship” my mind instantly went to the mandalorian finale where Luke shows up and Cara Dune says “Only one X-wing? Great.” Had similar vibes I guess. Would make sense for Thrawn to be terrified of Luke.

@@ebzdawka5619 That's accurate. We do know that Thrawn was communicating from the other galaxy with the SW one. Morgan built the Eye to bring the Chimaera back and Pellaeon says to Moff Gideon that they need to keep their presence on the down low until Thrawn's return. Both suggest that Thrawn and his allies have a way of communicating with each other long distance. My headcanon is that the Chiss Ascendancy was in uproar and concerned over Thrawn's disappearance. Perhaps with Eli and Ar'alani's help, the Chiss were the ones to track his path, eventually establishing long-range communication with the lost ship. And they relayed that to Thrawn's allies in the Empire. Remember the Chiss still need the Empire to fight the War with the Grysk/Yuuzhan Vong, even though they don't fully trust them.

I love how they respect the jedi enough to address them by their GAR ranks. To a stormtrooper a jedi is a wizard, but a general that is a rank and title they respect and never would have though they would have given them the curtesy of regarding them as soldiers.

If I'm remembering correctly, Thrawn doesn't show up in Rebels until Season 3. Given her (apparent) death at the end of Season 2, why would he research her?
Ahsoka was only in Season 2 and then vanished after her duel with Vader. Thrawn got introduced in Season 3 when Ahsoka was believed dead and not a part of the the Lothal-rebel-cell anymore. He never had to fight her.

Honestly SW has had some ups and downs but bringing Thrawn to the big screen was amazing, it’s safe to say that he is the Shockwave, of the series and the biggest tie breaker, tactical advantage of the Star Wars Universe

Problem wirh this scene: thrawn should already know this from the research he did on awaking when he joined the empire.
Since she never finished her training, it is possible there weren't many records of her being his apprentice, at least that he had access too. Thrawn is brilliant and diligent but he isn't omnipitent and many times in the stories he has appeared in, it is unknown variables that are his weakness.

It’ll probably be a lose-lose scenario. As the Ashoka show is setting up the movies to come out in a few years. Maybe thrawn survives but doesn’t make it back. Maybe he makes it back but with too little resources to wage a war, making him go on the run for a few more years. We probably have like 15 years until Kylo destroys the Luke’s temple

Thrawn is going to use the knowledge of who trained Ahsoka to get inside her head and try to break her.
Maybe it is just me but I wish Thrawn would project his voice a bit more or have the mic gain turned up on him. If it weren't for subtitles, I wouldn't know what he's saying half the time. On that note, I think he looks amazing and sounds amazing. I am happy every time he's on screen.

For me Thrawn had the same issue I had with the grand inquisitor(design wise), that his head is a wee bit too short. Maybe they should have used prosthetics to make his head a little bit taller, to be a bit similar to the animated rebels. But it’s such a small nitpick, I don’t need it to be changed
Thing is the Chiss are one of the many humanoid races in Star Wars that have only a few differences from humans being skin color, eyes and even sometimes facial muscles. So while the changes might help they’re not that necessary.
It's almost as if the features of cartoon characters are exaggerated on purpose.

He already knew that in the show too, he just wanted more info post exile and he was kinda talking for the sake of talking.

This entire scene is nonsensical - Thrawn knew Anakin during the Clone Wars and was told by Padme about a maneuver Ahsoka used that Thrawn would later employ to defeat one of his enemies in the Chiss Ascendancy. The show heavily implies the history between Thrawn and Anakin, yet ignores the fact that he already knew who Ahsoka was. Even if we're to ignore the books entirely, it doesn't make sense in the context of this show that he would have prior knowledge of who Baylan Skoll is, but he didn't know Ahsoka Tano was the apprentice of a man he ALREADY KNEW. You can't establish Thrawn as an all-knowing force, only to have him not know a crucial piece of information like this. To those who say: "the books don't count" - you're wrong, the books I am referencing are canon. That is, they WERE canon until Dave seemingly decided to yet again retcon someone else's story to replace it with his own shittier one.
Didn't Padme just refer to her as Anakin's apprentice, never out right stating Ahsoka's name? In any case it is weird that he knew of Baylan (a random jedi) but not about some pretty significant info about the one Jedi he met during the CWs. Oh well, passive research doesn't cover everything so he may not have known ANakin had an apprentice.
Can't we just agree that even someone like Thrawn doesn't remember every tiny bit he ever heard about something and can ... simply forget small things? Especially after he was stranded in another galaxy and departed from any civilization for years?
Also when he says "General Anakin Skywalker" he looks like he's starting to remember and he also said her master was unpredictable and grew more cautious. So it seems like he did know Anakin and they did not retcon it.

How did Baylan know about Ahsoka from the Republic era from knowing Anakin, but not Thrawn who saw through the rise of the Empire and Vader?
Baylan was a fellow Jedi General. Thrawn knew Anakin was Vader but I don’t believe ever out the pieces about Ahsoka being his apprentice together
Thrawn wasn't apart of the Republic military during the Clone Wars, he only joined the Empire later on. He met Anakin during one of his missions though, at the time he was serving his people I remember right.
Thrawn did know Anakin was Vader, however he didn’t know that Anakin Skywalker a apprentice was Ashoka. That’s why it was a bit of a surprise to him
